1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire reelers and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character through the medium of which wire, and particularly barbed wire, may be expeditiously wound in neat rolls on spools and removed for storage, the device further being adapted for use in unrolling the wire when desired.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a wire reeler of the aforementioned character embodying a rotary, demountable reel and swinging guide together with novel means for actuating said guide and the reel. Other objects of the invention are to provide a Wire reeler of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, efficient and reliable in operation, light in weight, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a wire reeler constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure3 is aview invertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical transverse section, taken substantially onthe line il of Figure 1, the shaft and sections being shown principally in elevation with the connected end portions thereof in section.
Figure 5 is a. detail view in vertical longitudinal section showing the means for operatively connecting the swinging guide to the actuating cam.
Figure 6 is a detail view in vertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure '7 is a detail view in vertical transverse 45 section, taken substantially on the line 'I'I of Figure 6.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a supporting frame which is designated generally by the reference numeral 1, said frame including a further includes a pair of cross members 7 extending between the rear portions of the side members 2, a cross member 8 and a cross member 9, the latter being secured on top of the side members 2.
Thereference numerals 10 and 11 designate transversely aligned bearings which are mounted on the forward end portions of the side mem here 2, the bearing 11 including a cap 12 and having journaled therein a comparatively short shaft 13 having a beveled gear 14 fixed on its outer end portion. Extending into the shaft 13 from the inner end thereof is a polygonal socket 15 for the reception of a correspondingly shaped shank 16 which projects longitudinally from one end of a reel supporting shaft 17, the other end of which is journaled in-the bearing 10. It will be noted that the bearing 10 is provided with no cap, thus permitting quick engagement and removal of the shaft 17. It will thus be seen that a driving connection is provided between the shafts 13 and 17, said connection being detachable. The reference numeral 18 designates a reel which is removably mounted on the shaft 17. A collar 19 is provided on the shaft 1'? for preventing sliding movement of the reel 18 thereon.
Mounted horizontally and rotatably on the cross member 8 is a comparatively large worm gear 20 having fixed on its upper side a cam 21 of the groove or channel type. The gear 20 rotates about a bolt 22 which passes through a slot 23 provided therefor in the cross member 8 of the supporting frame 1. The bolt 22 is provided with a securing nut 24 which, when loosened, will permit lateral sliding adjustment of the gear 20 for a purpose which will be presently set forth.
A wire guide is designated by the reference numeral 25, said guide being pivotally mounted at an intermediate point, as at 26, for swinging movement in a horizontal plane on the cross memher 9 of the supporting frame 1. The guide 25 includes a curved forward portion 27 which extends around the reel 18 for operative engagement, at its free end, with the wire which is being wound on the reel. The other end portion of the guide 25 is upwardly offset, as at 28, and extends across the cam 21 and has mounted thereon a roller 29 which is engaged in the groove of said cam 21, thus operatively connecting the guide 25 to the cam for actuation thereby.
A shaft 30 is journaled in bearings 31 provided therefor on a rear portion of the side members 2 and has fixed on one end portion thereof a hand crank 32. Also fixed on said one end portion of the shaft 30 is a double gear 33 having inner and outer series of teeth 34 and 35, respectively, on its inner side. A shaft 36 is journaled longitudinally on one side of the supporting frame 1 in bearings 37 provided therefor on one of the side members 2. A worm 38 is fixed on an intermediate portion of the shaft 36 and is in mesh with the gear 29 for connecting said gear to the shaft 36 for actuating thereby. A bevel gear 39 is fixed on the forward end portion of the shaft 36 and. is constantly engaged with the bevel gear 14 on the comparatively short shaft 13. The rear end portion of the shaft 36 is of polygonal transverse section, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 7 of the drawings, and has slidably mounted thereon a gear 40 which is engageable selectively with the teeth 34 or 35 of the gear 33. A hand lever 41 is pivotally mounted on the adjacent side member 2 of the frame 1 and has pivotally connected thereto a yoke 42 which is operatively connected with the slidaole gear 40, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 6 of the drawings. It will thus be seen that the gear 40 may be conveniently engaged with the teeth 34 or 35 of the gear 33 or disposed between said teeth, thereby disconnecting the shaft 36 from the gear 33.
A plate 43 extends between the cross members '7 and has pivotally mounted thereon a hand lever 44 which is operable in a slot 45 which is provided therefor in said plate 43. The hand lever 44 is pivotally connected at an intermediate point to the plate 43. Rods 46 are pivotally connected, at one end, to the lower end portion of the lever 44 and at their forward ends to intermediate portions of the swinging legs 4. By this construction and arrangement, the legs 4 may be swung to raise and lower the supporting frame and to shift the balancing point of the structure in accordance with the amount of wire on the reel 18. The levers 41 and 44 are provided with conventional securing means, as at 4'7, for releasably securing said levers in the desired position.
In use the hand crank 32 is actuated to drive the reel 18 in a direction to wind the wire thereon and also to actuate the swinging guide 25 which causes the wire to be wound evenly and neatly. The speed at which the mechanism operates may be regulated by engaging the gear 40 with the desired teeth 34 or 35 on the gear 33. When a reel has been filled, the shaft .17 may be removed after which the filled reel may be removed from said shaft 17 and an empty reel mounted in position. When it is desired to unreel the wire, the gear 20 is shifted laterally away from the worm gear 38 to prevent actuation of the guide 25. The slot 23 in the cross member 8 through which the pivot bolt 22 permits this lateral movement of the gear 20.
It is believed that the many advantages of a wire reel constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A wire reeler comprising a wheeled frame, reel rotatably and removably mounted on the frame, a gear, means for rotatably and shiftably mounting said gear on said frame, a cam fixed on the gear for rotation therewith, a wire guide pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane on the frame and having an arcuate end surround ng the lower portion of said reel and being spaced therefrom, means operativeiy connecting the guide to the cam for actuation thereby, a shaft rotatably mounted on the frame. means cperatively connecting the gear to the shaft for actuation thereby, means operatively connecting the reel to the shaft for actuation thereby, and manually operable means for actuating the shaft, said gear being shiftableto break the operating connection between said gear and shaft without disturbing the connection between said shaft and reel.
