Description

J. R; JACQUES. Last.
No. 196,151. Patented Oct. 16,1871 I UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
JOSEPH B. JACQUES, OF HANCOCK, MICHIGAN.
' IMPROVEMENT IN LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,151, dated October 16, 1877 application filed August 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH R. JACQUES, of Hancock, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Last, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved last. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in connecting the. forward end of the upper portion of the last with the lower portion thereof by means of dowels, and in connecting the rear end of the upper portion of the last with the lower part by means of a thumb-screw, and separating the two parts by means of wedges. 4
I11 the drawing, A is the lower or main portion of the last, and B the upper detachable portion. Dowels 1) project from the shoulder of the main portion A, and are received by holes formed in the forward end of the part B.
G is a nut secured to the upper surface of the part A, and D is a thumb-screw that passes through the part B into the nut G. A slotted plate, E, is attached to the part B, to take the wear of the head of the screw D.
F represents wedges interposed between the parts A B, to separate the same for the purpose of raising the instep.
The common way of fastening the two parts of the last together is-to nail them, and to raise the instep a mnnber of thicknesses of leather are nailed to that portion of the last. This practice soon destroys the last, especially where they are much used, as in large factories. By my improvement these difficulties are obviated, and much time and labor are saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of nut (J, thumb-screw D,
and one or more wedges, F, to render adjust,
able the rear end of instep-block B, as shown and described.
. JOSEPH ROMIALD JACQUES. Witnesses:
AUGUST METTE, DAVID CLIFFORD.
