20 Claims. (Cl. 312-140) This invention relates to clamps or clips for holding plates and more particularly for holding display or show case plates.
A primary object of the invention is to provide devices of this character for holdingin proper place and adjustment strips or plates of glass or any other suitable materialwhereby compartments of varying sizes may be formed to display 13' mechandise on display tables, counters, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to construct a clip of this character in which flexibility in size, shape, and material constitutes an essential feature, and which is thus made instantly adinstable being slidable and removable so that the size of each compartment maybe instantly adjusted without the use of tools and without marring the surface of thefixture.
Another object of the invention .is to provide resilient clips of this character which are adjustable or slidable and adapted to fit over the top edge of one compartment strip and down upon the sides of said strip and an end of a second compartment strip.
Another object of this invention is to provide clips of this character constructed so as to eliminate the necessity of fastening down whereby the compartments formed by the strips or plates in connection with which the clips are used may be quickly subdivided as both the clips and the partitions may be quickly removed and replaced when desired.

In carrying out these objects, the invention is susceptible of a wide range of modification without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention; there bet'ng shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes a preferred and practical form, in which:

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 a display table 1 is shown, the top 2 of which is provided with a plurality of compartments for displaying merchandise. These compartments 3 may be of any suitable or desired shape and size, and are formed by a plurality of partition strips or plates designated generally as 4 and located within an upstanding outer Wall 5. The wall 5 and the partitions 4 are connected by the clips comprising this invention, various forms of which are used for connecting the different partitions and which will be presently described in detail. The end walls 6 andthe side walls 7 are connected by suitable corner clips 10 fixed at the corners of the top 2.
The corner clips 10 which are used in connecting the end walls 6 with the side walls 7, as shown in detail in Fig. 18, are formed from a single plate, as shown in Fig. 19, which has a cut-out portion 11 at the center thereof and extending longitudinally of the plate for about two-thirds of its length more or less with the inner end walls of said cut-out portion converging as shown at 12. This cut-out portion 11 provides two side members or legs 13 and 14, the outer ends of which are bent laterally along the lines of fold 15 to form attaching feet 16 which are apertured as shown at 17 to provide for the fixation of said corner clips to the top of the table if it is desired to do this. The imperforate end 18 of the plate or blank from which the clip is formed is folded transversely outward along the lines of fold 19 and 20 to provide a down-turned hook-shaped portion adapted to fit over the outer faces of the end and side walls 6 and 7 to be connected, while the legs 13 and 14 are arranged on the inner faces of these walls and art disposed in planes at right angles to each other, the down-turned hook-like portion of the plate 18 being bent to engage over the wall on which it is to be mounted. The hook-like portion 21 of the corner clip is spaced from the inner members or legs 13 and 14 thereof by a connector 22 of a width corresponding to the thickness of the strips or plates to be connected by the clip.
The form of corner clip shown in Figs. 20 and 21 is similar to that shown in Figs. 18 and 19 just above described except that the outer hookshaped portion 21a instead of being cut off, as shown in Fig. 18, is of the same length as the inner members 13a and 14a and is provided at its lower end with out-turned feet 23 which are apertured similar to the feet 16a and are designed for securing the corner clip to the table top or other supporting structure in connection with which it is to be used.
In Fig. 22, the corner clip 10b is similar to that shown in Fig. 20 except that it is designed to be used in connection with fixtures having outside members arranged in a slanting position, as shown at 24. To provide for this slant of the fixture the attaching feet or toes 23a and 16b are inclined as shown in Fig. 22 and the connector 25 at the upper end which unites the outer and inner members of the clip is also made inclined.
In Figs. 23 and 24, still another form of corner clip is illustrated which is similar to that shown in Figs. 18 and 19 except that it is constructed for use on bulb top glass. A loop-shaped portion 26 is provided at the junction of the outer member 23b with the inner member 27 to adapt the clip for use in connection with bulb top glass. The blank shown in Fig. 24 is that from which the form shown in Fig. 23 is constructed, the inner members 2'7 having laterally out-turned apertured feet 28 for attachment to the table or other support. I
It will thus be seen that the clips above described can be used for connecting the end and side walls of the display compartments carried by the table top 2.
In the event any of the partitions are too short, two short partitions may be joined by a suitable splicing clip in order that 'a partition of proper length may be provided. Splicing clips 30 designed for connecting adjoining sections to form the outer wall of the compartments are shown in detail in Figs. 25, 26 and 27, and include upstanding body members or strips 31 each having a down-turned hook 32 at its upper end designed to be arranged over the upper edge of the strip to be connected, while at the lower end of the member 31 is provided an out-turned right angular apertured toe 33 for securing the splicing strip 115. to the table top.
The splicing clip 300, shown in Fig. 26 is similar to that shown in Fig. 25 except that it has a loop-shaped portion 34 at its uppper end designed for use in connection with the edge of 120 bulb top glass plate.
In Fig. 28 this clip 30 is shown applied, the end members of the strips A and B which are to be connected are shown abutting each other and with the clip 30 overlying them and holding them 25 in this position.
The partition members 4 include longitudinal and transverse partitions 35 and 36 designed to be supported within the compartment formed by the side walls 7 and end walls 6 which are held 130 in upright position by the corner clips 10. and these interior partitions are secured in adjusted position by means of the various forms of clips which constitute features of the invention.
On the outside compartment member 6 or 7 are mounted adjustable clips 37, designed for engagement with the ends of the partitions 35 and 36. These'clips 37 are shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The forms shown in Figs. 5 and 6 are exactly alike except the outer plate engaging member 38 shown in Fig. 6 is made longer than the one 38a shown in Fig. 5. Each of these clips has an outer plate engaging member shown at 38 in Fig. 6 and 38a in Fig. 5 and an inner plate engaging member 39 on which are arranged laterally projecting longitudinally extending flanges 40 and 41 designed to receive between them one end of the partition 36 or 35 to be supported thereby. Each clip also includes a base 39'. These clips are designed to straddle the outer 150 wall or compartment member 6 or 'I as the case may be, and are slidable on said members so that the clips may be positioned at any point desired, according to the size and shape of the compartment to be formed by the connection of the partition with the outer wall.
In Figs. 8 to 13, slightly different forms of this partition connecting clip are shown, the only diiference being that the clip is made longer to accommodate wider partition strips, or rather to adapt it for use with wider outer wall strips and the upper bent portion thereof is made loop-shaped as shown at 42 to adapt it to be used in connection with bulb top glass. The form shown in Figs. 10, 12 and 13 is for smaller or narrower walls, the structure being otherwise the same as that shown in the other figures. As shown in Fig. 9, a reinforcing insert may be disposed between the wall of the clip and the portions of the flanges which extend parallel thereto. It is to be understood that the flanges reinforce the clip since they provide a double thickness of material at proper and required places whether or not this insert is used.
In Figs. 14 to 17, a clip is shown of a type having double recesses for use within the fixture for partitions, that is, the clip 43 is formed of a strip of metal folded intermediate its ends to provide legs 44 and 45 which are designed to straddle a partition, as shown in Fig. 16, and these legs 44 and 45 are provided on their. outer faces with longitudinally extending channels 46 and 4'7 which are designed to receive the ends of partition members arranged at right angles to the partition on which the clip is mounted. In Fig. 16 the clip is shown with a loop-shaped folded or bent portion 47' for use in connection with bulb top glass, while in Fig. 14 the bend is made angular for use in connection with flat edged glass or partition members.
This clip is formed from the blank shown in Fig. 15 which is foldable along the dotted lines 48 to form the double walled edge portions of the clip and then bent outwardly at right angles to form the flanges 49 which are spaced apart a sufiicient distance to provide channels of a size to receive the partitions to be connected.
In the form shown in Fig. 1'7, the doublechanneled clip shown has the channel members 50 made removable, said members being slidably mounted in guides 51 formed along the side edges of the clip legs.
It will thus be seen that the clips 37 which are. designed to be mounted on the outside compartment members and those clips 43 which are for use on inside partitions, may be adjustedat any desired points so that the partitions may be arranged to form compartments of different sizes, as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.
These clips being slidable on the various partitions and walls provide instantly adjustable devices adapted for quick use in providing compartments for containing different articles and avoid the necessity of marring either the partitions or the clips for this purpose; This form of clip is needed to meet the requirements'of the methods of modern merchandising.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the price tag clip 52 is shown which is designed to be mounted on any one of 53 and having inwardly extending guides in theform of lips 55 to receive a ticket T to be mounted on the clip. A cross support 56 is also carried by the plate 54 as is shown clearly in Fig. 3. This price ticket clip may be placed on any partition and is slidable, as well as removable.
The clip as disclosed in Fig. 29 is arranged with the limb portions extending. verticallyand the bight portion may rest on the table top. The partition is disposed between the limb portions and in this manner the clip is, in effect, retained in position by the partition and accidental displacement is prevented. As best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, at least one of the parallel sections of the clip may be coextensive with the height of the partitions or bin. Thus, means for securing the clip to the top 2 may be provided at the lower end of the coextensive portion.
It is, of course, to be understood that any desired suitable material may be used in making up these clips or brackets, and if found desirable to do so, the metal from which the clips are constructed may be corrugated or beaded lengthwise to provide strength and resilience, the gist of the invention residing in the instantly adjustable slidable or removable nature of the clip or bracket whereby the size of each compartment may be instantly adjusted without tools and .without in any way marring the surface of the fixture, thereby providing an ideal display counter or table for varied changing lines of merchandise to be exhibited.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or its scope as claimed.
I claim:
1. A one-piece clip comprising a base strip, a pair of resilient clamp members on the strip and adapted to tightly clamp an interposed partition, and a pair of resilient clamp wings on one member forming a through channel parallel to the plane of said partition and adapted to tightly clamp an interposed partition arranged at an angle to the first mentioned partition.
2. A one-piece clip stamped from sheet metal and comprising a base strip, a pair of upstanding resilient clamp members on the base strip, and a pair of outwardly projecting resilient clamp wings on one clamp member forming between them an open-ended channel.
3. A one-piece clip comprising a channel mem ber adapted to receive a partition, and a pair of spaced resilient wings mounted on the channel member and formed to'provide a channel having both ends open to receive and tightly clamp a partition abutting the channel member, said last named channel extending substantially parallel to the plane of the first named channel.
4. A clip comprising a strip embodying substantially parallel sections, at least one of said sections having opposite edge portions folded inwardly toward each other and terminated in outwardly extending spaced apart sections providing a channel.
5. A clip comprising a strip adapted to straddle a support, at least one portion of said strip having the edge sections thereof folded toward each other and then outwardly to provide a channel extending substantially parallel to the plane of the first channel and being adapted to receive a member to be connected to said support.
6. A clip comprising a strip adapted to straddle a support, at least one. portion of said strip havextending substantially parallel with the plane of.
the first named channel. I r
7. A clip comprising a resilient substantially U-shaped strip, at least one of the limbs of said strip having opposite edge sections thereof folded inwardly toward each other, andterminated in spaced apart parallelly extending sections providing a channel extended parallel to the U- shaped strip.
8. A clip comprising a resilient substantially U-shaped strip having the bight portion thereof substantially loop-shaped, and at least one of the limbs of said strip having opposite edge sections thereof folded inwardly toward each other; and terminated in spaced apart parallelly extending sections providing a channel extending parallel to the U-shaped strip.
9. A clip comprising parallel plates resiliently connected at one end and adapted to straddle, slide on and resiliently grip a support, one of said plates having laterally spaced longitudinally extending flanges on its outer face to form combined partition holders and clip reinforcements, said longitudinally extending flanges embodying resilient portions extending parallel to each other to provide partition retaining portions.
' 10. A partition supporting clip comprising a strip of sheet metal folded transversely intermediate its ends to provide resilient clamping jaws to fit over the edge of a support, one of said jaws being folded longitudinally along the side edges thereof and having the edges extended outwardly to provide longitudinally extending laterally spaced flanges forming a receiving channel for a partition to be connected with the support and a reinforcement for the clip.
11. A partition supporting clip having a through channel defined by a web and substantially parallel clamping members arranged to straddle one edge of a support and extend on opposite sides thereof, one member of said clip having the edges thereof folded inwardly and forwardly to form outwardly extending parallel limb portions providing a second channel to receive a partition to be connected to the support, said channels being disposed on the same side of the web.
12. A fastener for knock down bins, comprising ,an elongated body -member substantially equal in length to the height of the bin and of A sufficient width to span the space between two adjacent edges of the walls of said bin, the said member having an inwardly and downwardly projecting resilient portion on one end thereof for engaging the top edges and inner faces of said walls, and a foot on the opposite end of said fastener.
13. .An integral fastener for knock down bins comprising two spaced parallel walls, at least one -of which is substantially equal in length to the height of the bin, the longer of said walls having parallel flanges projecting outwardly fromthe edges thereof, the said flanges terminating short of the top of said fastener.
14.. An integral resilient fastener for knock down' bins comprising two spaced parallel walls, at least one of which is substantially equal in length to the height of the bin, the said walls having parallel flanges projecting outwardly in opposite directions from the edges thereof, the said flanges terminating short of the top of said fastener.
15. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including angularly arranged panels; an integral clamp removably engaged 'with the adjacent ends of said panels, said clamp comprising a vertically arranged transversely angular portion to receive the ends of the panels, a resilient tongue extending downwardly from the upper end of the angular portion of the panels, said tongue being spaced from and parallel with said angular portion, and lugs at the lower end of the angular portion.
16. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including right-angularly arranged side and end panels, corner clamps removably engaged with the adjacent ends of said panels, each of said clamps comprising a vertically arranged transversely angular portion to receive the ends of the panels, a resilient tongue extend-- ing downwardly from the upper end of the angular portion over the rails with its extremity spaced from and parallel with said angular portion, and apertured lugs at the lower end of the angular portion.
17. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including panels, splice clamps for connecting the panels, each of said clamps comprising a plate adapted to overlap the meeting ends of the panels, and fastening elements at each end of the plate, at least one of said elements being adapted to engage the edges and sides of the panels.
18. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including marginal panels, rightangularly arranged partitions dividing the re ceptacle into separate compartments, and clamps for connecting the partitions, said clamps each comprising oppositely arranged transversely channeled members adapted to receive the ends of aligned partitions, and resilient means connecting said members to space the members apart to receive and grip the partition intersecting said aligned partitions.
19. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including marginal walls, rightangularly arranged partitions dividing the receptacle into separate compartments, and clamps for connecting the partitions, said clamps each comprising oppositely arranged transversely channeled members adapted to receive the ends of aligned partitions, and resilient means connecting said members to space the members apart to receive and grip the partition intersecting said aligned partitions.
20. An article of manufacture for use in connection with a counter top to provide an open top receptacle including marginal panels of sectional formation, and splice clamps for connecting the panel sections, each of said clamps comprising a plate of a height substantially equal to the height of the panels and adapted to overlap the meeting ends of the panel sections, and a resilient tongue extending from the top of the plate over the upper edge of the panel sections and downwardly and inwardly to engage faces of said sections.
