UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPP FISCHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAlTER-BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,080, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIPP Frscnnn, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Gaiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereonfwhich form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to the manufacture of button-gaiters. The uppers of shoes, as ordinarily made, consist of a vamp and two quarters, which construction necessitates three seams, two in front and. one at the heel of the shoe. These seams are objectionable, as they hurt the foot, and are also liable to rip, while considerable time is required to fit and. sew the pieces together. Also, the leg of a boot is ordinarily constructed of two, three, or four pieces, thereby forming unnecessary number of seams.
The object of my invention is to overcome these objections; and the novelty consists in constructing a button-gaiter in two parts, to
wit, the upper and the leg, the upper forming the vamp and two quarters made of a single piece, with the seam on the inside or inner side of the shoe, and the leg with button-flap formed from a single piece, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.
In the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent a side view of my improved gaiter. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pattern forming the vamp and two quarters. Fig; 4 is a plan vie'wof the leg for gaiters. v
In the drawing, the letter A designates the pattern. In this pattern the part marked a is intended to form the vamp, and the parts I) the quarters. To give this pattern or upper the desired form, previous to applying the sole, it is folded over on the line 0 c. The rear portion is then doubled 'over .on the line (1 d,
which brings the edges or ends 0 and f together, thus forming the vamp and quarters. These ends 6 and f are brought together on the inside and stitched in the usual manner.
The pattern B forms the whole of the leg for the gaiter. This pattern is folded as shown by the dotted lines h h and i 1', or on lines parallel, or nearly so, with its sides, according to the degree of taper required for the leg.
By means of these patterns, cut substantially as shown, my improved gaiter or shoe is formed in the following manner: The parts are secured together in the usual manner, with this exception, that the button-flap c is situated on the outside, while the seam D is situated on the inside and extends over the soft hollow portion of the foot, where itis less liable to produce irritation and pain the wearer of the boot or shoe.
It will be observed by reference to the drawings that each pattern is formed of a single piece of leather or other material.
By this construction the following advantages are attained: first, the saving of stock in the cutting; second, the saving of labor and time in putting the parts together; third, it prevents the ripping of seams; and, fourth,
produces a better fitting shoe, gaiter, or boot.
I make no claim to the patterns per see.
What I claim as my invention is A button-gaiter consisting of two parts, the one forming the vamp and quarters, and the other the leg portion and button-flap, the two being formed substantially as described, and united to each other, so that in the finished shoe the buttonflap is on the outside and the seam inside.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 affix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
PHILIPP- FISCHER.
