This invention relates to show cases and more particularly to a show case of the sectional knockdown type in which the several component parts may be readily set up or assembled, and as read- 5 ily disassembled.

In accordance with the provisions of this invention, a show case is provided in which the lights and shelves or supports thereof may be quickly assembled without the aid of numerous connecting clips and brackets whereby the show case may be shipped in a knock-down or compact condition and quickly set up at the point of use without the aid of one skilled in show case construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide a show case of this type in which the lights or shelves, if they become broken, may be readily replaced.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a show case of this character which is simple in construction and as a consequence may be quickly and easily and economically manufactured.

Various other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a show case constructed in accordance with this invention;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the frame members;

Figure 3 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 3-3 in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of a show case at one end thereof, certain parts being broken away;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 5--5 in Figure 3, and

Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 66 in Figure 3.

Referring now particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts, it will be noted that there is provided a pair of frame members indicated generally by the reference character 10. These two frame mem- 5o' bers are spaced apart and constitute the entire supporting means for the front, end and top lights; the bottom, and the shelves or supports of the show case. The structure of these frame members, to which detail reference will be made hereinafter, is such that they may be readily produced by casting, and the detail construction .of these members is also such that the lights and supports of the show case may be held in place thereby without the aid of other clips, brackets, or the like.

In Figure 1, there is illustrated a counter or other support 11 upon which the show case may be mounted, either in spaced relation thereto, as by means of legs or uprights 12, or directly thereon, in a manner to be referred to but not illustrated. Each frame member 10 is provided with a base portion 14 having one or more apertures 15 formed therein and counter sunk as at .16. The base portion 14 of each frame is provided along one longitudinal edge with a downwardly extending flange 17. In the form of construction illustrated, each support 12 is provided with a horizontal portion 18 which engages the lower face of the base member 14 with the flange 17 overlapping the horizontal leg portion 18. Each frame member 10 is secured to its supporting leg 12 by screws, bolts, or the like which pass downwardly through the apertures 15 and into threaded openings in the horizontal leg portion 18, these fastening means lying fiush with the upper face of the base member 14 by reason of the counter sinks 16. Each leg member may be secured to a counter or other support 12, or the like, as for instance by clamps 19. If the .show case is to be supported directly upon the counter, the legs are of course dispensed with and the fastening means passed downwardly through the openings 15 and directly into the counter.

The frame 10 is provided with vertically spaced transversely extending bars or struts 20, 21 and 22 and with an inwardly extending peripheral flange 23extending along three sides of the frame member, that is the two vertical sides thereof and the bottom or base thereof. This flange 23 is spaced laterally from the adjacent face of the struts or cross members 20 to produce and define therebetween an end light receiving recess .01 groove 24 into which an end light may be inserted by sliding the same downwardly thereinto from the top of the frame member.

The top strut or cross member 20 is provided with a right angular extending lug or flange 25 substantially intermediate its length, and the cross member or strut 22 is provided with a similar flange or lug 26, each of these lugs being formed with an aperture 27 extending therethrough. Tie rods 28 are associated with these lugs for securing the two end frame members 10 together and in proper spaced relation, and 110 for this purpose each of the tie rods 28 is preferably formed with reduced ends 29 forming shoulders, which reduced ends pass through lugs 25 with the shoulders formed thereby engaging the opposed faces of the companion lugs of the two frame members to properly space the frame members, as will be apparent. Nuts or other fastening means 30 are secured to the ends of the tie rods to secure the same in place and to produce with the end frame members a skeleton frame work to receive the lights and supports of the show case in a manner to be more fully described.

One upright portion of each of the frame members 10 is provided with a groove or slot 31, the grooves of the pair of frame members extending in opposite directions or being opposed so that together they form a recess for the front light of the show case which may be engaged therewith by inserting the same downwardly from the top of the recess. The bottom of the groove 31 in each frame member is closed, as indicated at 32, to support the front light. The bottom edge of the end lights, which are mounted in the end light recess 24, rest upon the upper face of the base 14 of the frame member.

The upper end of each upright of the frame members is provided with a right angular up standing flange 33 which, together with the upper cross bar 20 of each frame member, provide a top light receiving recess 34, it being understood. that with the top light arranged in the horizontal position in the recess 34 that the right angular flanges 33 prevent both endwise and lateral movement of the top light.

The cross members or struts 21 and 22 constitute supports for the ends of the shelves of the show case, while the end lights, when in position, prevent longitudinal displacement of the shelves, whereas the upright frame members prevent lateral movement of the shelves. The bottom is supported upon the upper faces of the base 14. of the frame members, endwise and lateral movement being prevented in a like manner.

In assembling the show case, assuming that the end frame members 10 have been properly spaced and secured together by the tie rods- 28, the front light 35 may be first located by engaging the same in the front light receiving recess 31 formed in the opposed faces of the front uprights of the frame members. The front light engages these recesses 31 and rests upon the base 32 thereof. One of the end lights 36 may then be located by inserting the same in one of the end light receiving recesses 24 from the open top thereof, the lower end of this end light resting upon the upper face of the base 14 of the frame member. The bottom 3''! and the shelves or supports 38 may then be inserted from the other end of the show case by tilting the same transversely to permit the same to be inserted between the uprights of the frame member, and after being completely inserted, these members are turned so that they are transversely horizontal,

the shelves or supports 38 resting upon the cross members 21 and 22 and the bottom 37 resting upon the upper face of the base member 14. Thereupon the other end light 39 is inserted in the same manner as was the end light 36, and lastly the top light 40 is placed in the top light receiving recess 34. The top light, therefore, prevents the removal of the end lights 36 and 39 as well as the front light 35, and the end lights prevent the removal of the shelves 38 and the bottom 37.

If desired, the rear or exposed edges of the bottom 3'7 and shelves 38 may be provided with edge guards 41 of metal or the like.

Thus, from the foregoing description, it will be apparent a show case of the described character is provided wherein the several parts thereof are assembled without the aid of numerous connecting clips, brackets, or the like. The supporting structure for the lights, shelves, and the like consists solely of the end frame members 10. Thus the structure may be readily shipped in a knock-down or collapsed and compact condition and readily set up at the point where it is to be used, and without the aid of skilled mechanics. Moreover, any of the lights or shelves which become broken or otherwise damaged may be quickly and easily removed and replaced.

Obvious modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in this art, and to this end reservation is made to make such changes as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims. 7

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In a knock-down show case of the type described, a pair of separate frame members, cooperating means on said frame members forming a guide into which a front light may be slidably engaged and supported, cooperating means on said frame members forming a top light supporting recess, and means integral with each of 10.5 said frame members forming a recess into which an end light may be slidably engaged and supported, a potrion of said last mentioned means providing a support for the end of a shelf.

2. In a knock-down show case construction, a pair of separate frame members, cooperating means on said frame members for slidably receiving and supporting a front light, cooperating means at the upper ends of said frame members for supporting a top light, said frame members being provided with base portions cooperating to support a bottom member, means on each of said frame members for slidably receiving and supporting an end light, said last named means including cross bars cooperating to support shelves, and a tie-rod extending between said frame members and secured respectively to a cross bar on each of said frame members.

3. In a show case, a pair of frame members each provided With a vertical groove which grooves cooperate to receive and support a. front light, means on the upper end of each of said frame members which cooperate for receiving and supporting a top light, horizontally extending supporting members on each of said frame members cooperating to support a bottom and shelf members, and means on each frame member cooperating with said horizontally extending supporting members to form a substantial recess for slidably receiving and supporting an end light.

4. In a show case, a pair of frame members each provided with a vertical groove which grooves cooperate to receiveand support a front light, means on the upper end of each of said no frame members which cooperate for receiving and supporting a top light, horizontally extending supporting members on each of said frame members cooperating to support a bottom and shelf members, means on each frame member forming a substantial recess for slidably receiving and supporting an end light, a tie-rod, and means for securing the ends of said tie-rod to one of the horizontally extending supporting members of each of said frame members.

said uprights and cooperating with a corresponding groove in the other frame member for supporting a front light, said base and intermediate cross bar providing means for supporting a bottom and shelf members respectively, and upright angular flanges on the upper ends of said uprights cooperating with said first mentioned cross bar to support a top light.
