Description
No. 196,045. Patented Oct. 9, 1877.
nrnnnnnn N-FEI'ERS. PHDTKLLITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT @rrron.
GEORGE D. SGHUYLER, OF LYONS, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HARMON D. NUTTING, OF PARISH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED MONUMENT AND TOMB.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,045, dated October 9, 1877; application filed July 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. ScnUYLnR, of Lyons, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GombinedMonument and Tomb and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section; and Fig. 3, a crosssection after the line 00 as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to a combined tomb or vault and monument, to be made of sheet or cast metal in such a manner as to be convenient for transportation and erection. Its construction is as I shall now proceed more fully to describe with reference to the drawings hereto annexed, in which- A is the box, made preferably of cast metal, which forms the tube or vault. It is of any suitable size, and in shape is tapering toward the bottom, as shown. Near its upper end it has a wide ledge, B, the rim above which, 0, has a circumferential fl. nge or shoulder, a. The bottom of box A has a recess, a across which are placed grate-bars a for the coflin P to rest upon. This recess forms a tank or hold, in which moisture discharged from the bodies is collected, the coffin being raised above it by the grate-bars a D is the lower part or base of the monument, which is so constructed as to rest upon the shoulder of the vault A, and forming a cover for about the rear third of it. Upon the front side it has a gable-shaped projection, I), having a groove, 0, in which fits the flange d of the gable-shaped roof or cover, G, which is hinged to the side of the box, as shown at e. The cover G has a rim, f, resting upon shoulder a, as shown.
The above-described construction of the box A, base D, and cover G, presents the following advantages: Owing to its shape being tapering toward the bottom, it can be easily set in the ground, the ledge B causing it to maintain its original position without settling to either side. The gable-shaped roof G carries off all rain-water and other moisture, the joint between it and the base I) being made water-tight by the gutter-shaped groove 0 and the flange d fitting therein. \Vater is also prevented from entering the box from the outside, owing to the rim C, which is somewhat raised above shoulder a, upon which the base I) and cover G rest.
A plate of glass, H, is preferably placed in the vault, resting upon ledge B, as shown. After the bodies have been deposited in the vault this plate is cemented down, thus making'the tomb air as well as water tight.
The monument K, which is made in sections, 70 k, convenient for transportation, may be of any suitable size, shape, and design. Being made of metal, the sections are, of course, hollow, and each lower section has on top blocks 9 g fitting into the recess of the section next above, which is thus, by necessity, placed in its proper position when the menu ment is erected.
A metallic rod, R, having at its upper end an ornamental cap -piece, S, passes down through the several sections and the base 1), on the under side of which it is secured by a nut, N, thus holding the monument in position.
An ornamental metallic railing, M, is arranged upon base I) around the foot of the monmnent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The vault-box A, having ledge B, and rim O, having shoulder a, in combination with the monument-base D, having gable-shaped grooved projection b, and hinged gable-shaped cover G, having flange d, all arranged and constructed substantiallyin the manner herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE D. SCHUYLER.
