Description

Patented Jan. 20, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DANIEL E. JONES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO CLIFFORD L. FLAVEN, AS
TRUSTEE BURIAL vAULT Application filed April 15,
My invention relates to improvements in burial vaults and has for its object to provide a double walled vault of unitary construction adapted to the preservation of the casket held within the inner compartment, and the maintenance of dryness in the casket receptacle by means of the air spaces between said casket receptacle and the outer receptacle or sarcophagus.
The vault of my invention is adapted to be constructed in a factory and of abulk readily transportable, or may be of dimensions and weight necessitating its construction in situ. It is equally adapted for the interment of the entire structure or for use above ground as a mausoleum. It may be formed of metal or cementitious material as desired.
In the drawings: A i
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal view in mid-section of a structure embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same,
The sarcophagus A encloses the casket' receptacle B and is integrally formed with the vvertical walls 5 thereof by means of the buttresses 4, as shown, the vertical walls 5 having the inturned flange 6 formed at their inturned lower edges to receive the bottom 6 of the casket receptacle B.
The sarcophagus A has the lid or cover 7 with the depending flange 8 tting the mouth of the sarcophagus A. The lid or cover 7 is of larger area than the mouth of the sarcophagus A and is preferably provided with the groove 9 beneath its projecting margins to prevent the passage of water to the mouth of the sarcophagus A.
The casket receptacle B has a lid or cover 10 with the depending flange 11 enabling it to accurately fill the mouth of the casket receptacle B.
There is thus provided an air chamber C entirely p surrounding the casket receptacle B save where it is interrupted by the buttresses 4-and the buttresses 4 are so disposed as to permit the free vertical circulation of.
air within the air chamber C due to varia- 1929. Serial No. 355,401.
tions in temperature within the air chamber C,`to the end of maintaining the casket re-V ceptacle B in as dry condition as possible,
whether the vault be underground or mounted above ground. Y
I have indicated at 12 a boss formed on the upper face of the lid 7 for the reception of an inscription plate 13. Through the boss 12 a vertical vent 14 isprovided to accommodate air resistance in seating the lid 7 in place the lid 7 having been seated, the vent 14 is l sea-led by a 'plug 15 of any suitable material, whereupon the inscription plate 13 is mounted in place. r
If preferred, the casket receptacle B may agus A, and not be molded or cast intei grally with the buttresses 4, and other struc`f` tural variations may be effected without departure from'my actual invention as defined p by the appendedclaim. f
I claim: v
