Description

May 22, 1934- J. J. VAUGHAN PROTECTING AND PARTING STRIP FOR FLOOR COVERINGS 9 Filed Sept. 16, 1951 I n w efl for. John James Van/36d.
Patented May 22, 1934 PATENT OFFICE PROTECTING AND PARTING STRIP FOR FLOOR COVERINGS John James Vaughan, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, assignor to The T. Eaton Co. Limited, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada Application September 16, 1931, Serial No. 563,008
5 Claims.
The principal objects of this invention are to protect the edges of carpets, rugs, linoleum or other floor coverings from excess wear and damage particularly where such are used in public places, and to provide a parting strip for placing between adjoining fioor coverings, particularly where they are of different character, such as carpet and linoleum which will form a neat border to both and which will protect the edges of both adjoining coverings against mis-treatment from the ordinary traffic of persons walking thereon and from the use of cleaning implements and cleaning and polishing substances.
A further object is to provide such a protective strip which will be very easily laid and which will be practically immune from injury and which will not be a source of injury to persons coming in contact therewith.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a parting strip constructed in accordance with this invention, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention as a parting strip between two different types of floor covering.
It has been proposed to use metal strips of various kinds for securing the edges of floor coverings and to form parting strips between said coverings, but such strips have many detrimental qualities, becoming bent or torn or otherwise deformed in such a manner as to become a menace to the convenience and safety of persons walking thereover. Further, they are more or less glaring and unsightly through becoming scratched or discoloured.
The present invention is extremely simple, consisting of a strip 1 formed of asemi-hard resilient material such as rubber and this strip is placed intermediate of the width of a broad, fiat, thin strip 2 of a suitable tough flexible material of a nature similar to that of the strip 1. It is preferably formed of rubberized fabric and the strips are cemented or vulcanized together to form a substantially unitary piece.
The strip 1 is preferably slightly thicker than either of the floor coverings with which it is to be used and the top surface may be fiat or rounded or it may be bevelled in the manner shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating its structure and use.
A strip of semi-soft resilient material such as herein described is placed upon the floor and the floor coverings 3 and 4 are laid to overlap the thin broad edges of the bottom strip 2 with the edges of the floor coverings abutting the longitudinal edges 5 and 6 of the strip 1.
It will be readily appreciated that the flexible parting strip will accommodate itself to any un- 1.
injured by carpet cleaning machines or floor pol- I ishing machines and it protects the carpet from becoming marred or injured in the cleaning of an adjacent linoleum. It will also be understood that the strip may be made with the thin bottom strip projecting from only one edge of the strip 1 where it is to be used to border a floor covering adjacent to stone or tile floor. Its own weight will hold it in position and the peculiar nature of rubber or rubberized fabric causes it to adhere snugly to a surface upon which it is laid.
What I. claim as my invention is:-
1. A protecting and parting strip for floor coverings spaced apart, comprising a broad fiat strip of rubberized fabric adapted to extend under the respective spaced coverings and having a1] narrower thicker strip of rubber integrally connected thereto intermediate of its width for engagement on opposite sides with the respective edges of the spaced floor coverings.
2. A protecting and parting strip for floor 5' coverings spaced apart, comprising a thin fiat strip of tough flexible material adapted to underlie the respective floor coverings and having a narrower strip of a thicker flexible material integrally connected therewith centrally of its width having perpendicular longitudinal edges of different heights from said thin strip for engagement with the respective edges of said spaced floor coverings.
3. An improved for floor coverings spaced apart, comprising a parting strip element of semi-soft resilient rubber material for abutting the spaced edges of the respective floor coverings, said strip having a thin base portion extending from opposite sides thereof for engagement with the underside of the edge portions of the respective floor coverings.
4. A protecting and parting strip for floor coverings spaced apart comprising a main parting strip body formed of semi-soft pliable material for accommodation in edge-to-edge contact 1 protecting and parting strip between the spaced edges of the respective floor coverings, said parting strip element having thin fiat anchor portions extending laterally from opposite sides thereof at the base for underlying the edge portions of the respective floor coverings.
5. A protecting and parting strip for floor coverings spaced apart comprising a main parting strip member for positioning in the space between JOHN JAMES VAUGHAN.
