COSMETIC BOX Filed March 6, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR A Zberffl Millie/z awm mb M ATTORN EYS Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COSMETIC BOX Application March e, 1933, Serial No. 659,610 6 Claims. (01. 132-82) My present invention relates to multiple cosmetic units of the type used in boudoirs.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a cosmetic unit of the above type incorporating face powder, pufl', lip rouge, face rouge, eye shadow, and any and all other expedients commonly employed by womankind for facial beautification.
A more specific object is to provide a unit of the above type which shall be particularly compact, convenient and attractive and shall lend itself readily to inexpensive manufacture.
Another object is to provide a box of the above type in which can be used as elements the conventional cardboard face powder box now on the market, and the conventional metal trays used for rouge and other cosmetics.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete unit;
Fig. 2 is a dropped perspective view showing the major constituent elements of the unit;
Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal cross section on a larger scale, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the face powder compartment;
' Fig. 5 is a view in longitudinal cross section, on
line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the tray mounting panel, and
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of one of the cosmetic trays. '7
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a rectangular cardboard box 10, in which is contained the usual face powder unit 11, which comprises, as best shown in Fig. 4, a container 12 having a base 13 and a cover 14 having an aperture closed by a tissue paper 16 thereunder, held in place above the powder by a sheet of paper 17, also apertured as at 18. Obviously the tissue paper 16 is to be broken through when the pow- *der is to be used.
superposed over the face powder pack and 'within the box is a conventional powder puff '19, which substantially fills the rectangular chamber of the box 10 and extends practically flush with the rim of the box. The box thus far described is conventional and is ordinarily enclosed by a cover tray, (not shown).
According to the present invention, a composite cover unit is provided which contains a plurality of compartments for various cosmetics. This composite cover may consist of a plate 20 of cardboard, fiber or the like, upon which is secured a layer 21 of cardboard or the like determining an angular border for cosmetic tray 24, and a stop for trays 22 and 23, said trays mounted and preferably adhesively secured in the corresponding places over support plate 20. These trays, one of which is shown in Fig. 7, are flat sheet metal containers, accommodating the cosmetic paste, and provided with out-turned rims 27. In a practical embodiment, tray 22 would contain lip rouge, tray 23 eye shadow, and tray 24 rouge.
A frame member 26 extends over the rims 27 of the respective trays and exposes their contents through preferably rectangular apertures 28 therein, the frame having downturned flanges 29 bonded together to form a flat box which encircles thebase 20. The assembly of support plate, trays and frame is disposed in a fiat box 30 having walls 31 secured to the flanges 29 of the frame. A rectangular wall 32 encircles the sides 31 of the box 30, is secured thereto, and extends, as at 33, below the floor of the box 30 to telescope over the rim 34 of the powder box 10.
The frame 26 has a strip extending the length thereof and above the level of the trays, and serves to reinforce the frame and to space the closure 41 therefrom, said closure lodged within the wall 31 and resting on said reinforced strip 40. Preferably, a flatpowder puff 42 is disposed over the rouge tray 24 and protected by the reinforced strip 40 from pressure by cover 41. The cover may have a handle block 44 or a handle loop (not shown) or other means serving as a convenient finger grip.
It will be seen that by removal of the cover 41 there is immediately accessible to the user the rouge tray 24 and its puff 42, the lip rouge tray 22, and the eye shadow tray 23. By merely lifting the composite cover unit from the box 10, the powder puff and face powder are readily accessi- 5 ble, and after use the box can immediately be reclosed.
Ordinarily, the various elements of the box are of cardboard, but it will be understood that more expensive embodiments could readily be constructed of wood, molded material, metal, or the like, that the box could be embodied in various diiferent ornamental shapes rather than in the rectangular form shown, and that a greater or lesser number of compartments, according to requirements, could be employed within the scope of the invention.
It will thus be seen that there is herein described an article in which the several features of this invention are embodied, and which article in its action attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of practical use.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b'yLetters Patent is:- e
1. A multi-compartment unit for a cosmetic box including a base plate, cosmetic trays affixed thereto, a frame panel extending over the rims of said trays and exposing the contents thereof, a rectangularwallextending peripherally about said plate and said frame and secured thereto, and protruding atits lower edge below said plate for telescopic mount over a powder box.
.2. In an article of the character described, a rectangular plate of fiber, flat trays of cosmetics upon said plate, a frame member extending over the rims of said trays and having apertures exposing the contentsof said trays, a wall member extending about the rim of said plate and said frame, and secured thereto, the lower edge of said .wall member extending below said plate for telescopic mounting thereof over a powder box.
- 3. In an article of the character described, a cardboard plate, cosmetic trays aiiixed thereto, means aifixed to saidplate determining the positions of said trays, a frame member extending parallel to said plate and extending over the rimsof said trays and having apertures exposingthe contents of said trays, said frame having downturned flanges enclosing the rim of said plate, and a fiat container snugly enclosing said elements.
4. In an article of the character described, a cardboard plate, cosmetic trays afiixed thereto, means affixed to said plate determining the positions of said trays, a framing member extending parallel to said plate extending over the rims of said trays and having apertures exposing the contents of said trays, said frame having downturned flanges enclosing the rim of said plate, a flat container enclosing said elements, a rectangular wall encircling said container extending below said plate and adapted at its lower edge to telescope over the edge of a powder box.
5. An article of the character described, comprising a cardboard support, fiat metallic cosmetic trays adhesively secured to said support, a framing member comprising a flat rectangular frame contacting the rims of said cosmetic trays and apertured to expose their contents, the rimof said frame. encircling said support, a flat box housing said frame and a rectangular wall about said boxprotruding below said support and adapted for telescopic mount as the cover of a powder box.
6. A multiple cosmetic box including a rectangular container having a face powder pack therein, a multiple compartment cover telescoped over the rim of said box, said cover including a plate, a plurality of flat cosmetic trays affixed to said plate, a frame member extending over the rims of said traysand having apertures exposing the contents of said trays, a reinforcing rib extending across saidv frame member above the trays, I
a flat box enclosing said plate and said frame member, a wall about said flat box protruding therebelow for telescopic mountover said powder box, and a closure for said multiple cover resting on said reinforced rib and extending over said cosmetic trays. V v
