IMPROVEMENT IN SURGICAL APPARATUS FOR FRACTURE OF THE CLAVICLE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,941, dated October 9, 1877; application filed June 25, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BAnTnoLoMnwG. Mo- GABE, of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Fracture of the Olavicle, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to apparatus for treating fractures of the clavicle, acromion process, and coracoid process; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel and valuable combination of a sleeve for the arm, a collar for the shoulder, and an arrangement of straps, hereinafter explained, whereby the arm and shoulder of the fractured side are positively supported and held in a normal position, and in such a positioifas will afford the greatest possible comfort to the patient.

In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a front view, showing my improved fracture apparatus applied to a person. Fig. 2 is a back View.

The letter A designates a collar, which is of circular form, adapted to fit snugly around the shoulder, as shown in the drawing. I prefer to construct one side of this collar of chamoisleather and the opposite side of strong canvas, properly padded and quilted to afiord comfort to the wearer. The ends of this collar are provided with straps and buckles a a, by which it is seciu'ed on the shoulder.

To the outer side of the collar A, I attach a number of buckles, b, five buckles on each side of the center being preferred.

B designates a sleeve, which is cut to receive the arm when flexed, as shown in the annexed drawing, and which is made to receive either the right or left arm. This sleeve may be made of canvas or other suitable material, and to the front and back parts straps O O are attached by means ofV-shaped pieces of chamois-leather.

When the collar A is strapped on the shoulder, and the sleeve applied on the arm of the fractured side, a pad, I), is adjusted in the axilla, and kept in its place by means of a strap, 0, over the shoulder, and another strap, 0, around the body.

The axillary pad is constructed with a slit covered by a flap, f, by which means this pad can be enlarged or diminished in size, using hair as the stuffing.

When the collar, the sleeve, and the pad have been applied, as described, the arm on the injured side is properly adjusted in a flexed position across the body, and held in such position by means of the front and rear straps C C, which are attached to their respective buckles I) on the collar A, as shown in the drawing.

It will be observed from the above description that by my improved apparatus the straps C C radiate from a common center; hence they will support the arm uniformly, drawing alike from every point.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the shoulder-collar A, having straps and buckles a b, the flexed sleeve B, the front and back straps C C, and the axillary D, all connected and held substantially as shown and described.
