This invention relates to garments and has special reference to improvements in athletic pants, such as used in the playing of football, basketball, and the like, the principal object being to render same more flexible and eflicient in use.

Another object is to provide added flexibility of the garment without abnormally increasing its size, thus providing a close fitting garment.

Still another object is to provide such added flexibility without in any way jeopardizing the efficiency of the protecting pads of the garment, but at the same time holding the pads in place by the close fit of the garment.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the further description of the invention.

Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:

The illustration is that of the rear elevation of a pair of pants embodying the invention.

The invention resides simply in incorporating within preferably the rear portion of the firm fabric goods of which the pants are made one or more longitudinal strips 1 of Jersey cloth, or

other similarly yieldable goods, extending preferably from substantially the waist line of the pants to the extreme lower portion of each leg; such strips being incorporated within the firmer fabric 2 of the pants. Each strip, of which there lnay be any desired number, is preferably made of the proper width to provide the elasticity required by any position assumed by the wearer, care being taken to retain as much as possible of the firmer fabric 2, and I have shown in the drawing the two resilient strips as being united in the upper seat portion of the garment, which may be preferred, or each strip may continue independently to the waist portion as indicated in The crotch portion of the pants is made of the firmer fabric 2 in order to hold the garment in shape while being subjected to the rough usage it receives.

It is well known that in the practice of the game of football for example almost the entire time of the player while in action is either in the attitude of stooping or running and which demands the greatest amount of flexibility in the garment, but which, to a considerable ex- I am aware that a somewhat similar expedient has been resorted to in the making of undergarments, but in respect to the matter of comfort and durability only. To be comfortable, such undergarments must be loose, whereas the outer athletic garment of this invention maintains a close fit to avoid the hand-hold of an opponent. In the present combination of a resilient strip of fabric incorporated within the firm fabric of an outer athletic garment having attached thereto a plurality of comparatively still" protection pads at different points thereupon, such as the thigh pads 4 and kidney pad 5, the resilient strip automatically functions with the firmer fabric 2 to hold the respective pads in place as well as maintaining a close fit of the garment at and intermediate the pads, thus preventing grabbing by an opponent. The advantage of this latter functioning is particularly appreciable when considering that heretofore in common practice, the garment intermediate of the pads was made sufficiently large to permit of proper freedom of the body, resulting in superfluous material at such places. This was very objectionable for example in garments used in playing football or the like where ones ability to prevent the grasp and hold of his opponent is paramount.

It is well known that football pants heretofore made are designed with a decided peg-top effect to allow requisite freedom of the players buttocks, which results in a bulging and flapping of the surplus material at times, and which frequently results in affording a splendid handheld for an opponent, often determining sue-'90 cess or failure of a game, whereas the pants of the present invention are always close fitting on all parts of the body and free from such objections because they are trim and slick on the wearer and simultaneously hold the various knee, thigh, and kidney pads tightly in place for the purpose intended, as well as preventing their slightest displacement of bulging whereby they might act as a hand-hold as above described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. Athletic outer pants of the close fitting type, comprising elastic material incorporated within and itself forming a component part of the material of which the pants are made, said elastic material extending longitudinally of and substantially throughout the length of said pants and serving to make said pants clos fitting from top to bottom. 7

2. Athletic outer pants of the close fitting type, comprising firm material and elastic material incorporated within and itself forming a component part of the material of which the pants are made, and reinforcement pads afilxed to said firm material, said elastic material extending longitudinally of and substantially throughout the length of said pants and serving to make said pants close fitting from top to bottom and serving to hold said pads in place.

3. Athletic outer pants of the close fitting type, comprising firm material and elastic material incorporated within and itself forming a component part of the material of which the pants are made, the crotchof said pants being made of said firm material and said" elastic material extending longitudinally of and substantially throughout the length of said pants and serving to make said pants close fitting from top to bottom.

4. Athletic outer pants of the close fitting type, comprising firm material and elastic material incorporated Within and itself forming a component part of the material of which the pants are made, and reinforcement pads affixecl to said firm material, the crotch of said pants being made of said firm material and said elastic material extending longitudinally of and substantially throughout the length of said. pants and serving to make said pants close fitting from top to bottom and serving to hold said pads in place. 5. Athletic outer pants of the close fitting type, comprising firm material and elastic material incorporated within and itself forming a component part of the material of which the pants are made, and reinforcement pads afiixed to said firm material, the crotch of said pants being made of said firm material and said elastic material being of width less than the width of the back leg portion of said pants and extending longitudinally of and substantially throughout the length of said pants and serving to make'said pants close fitting from top to bottom and serving to hold said pads in place.

6. Athletic outer garment of the close fitting type comprising elastic material incorporated within the material of which said garment is made and extending substantially throughout the length'of the garment, in combination with a reinforcement pad, said elastic material serving to make said garment smooth fitting from top to bottom and serving to hold said pad in place.
