My invention relates to a roller for perforating non-porous strip material (such as fabrikoid and similar fabrics) with a multiplicity of needle point perforations, thereby making it into porous ma- 5 terial and extending its useful applications.
Fabrikoid and other coated fabrics, make excellent substitutes for leather, if given breathing qualities, by the formation of minute openings in the material.
Shoe-uppers can then be made from fabrikoid,
which, in its ordinary manufactured state is unavailable, because of its non-porous quality.
In addition to shoe material, fabrikoid and other similar fabrics, are useful for belts, leg- 1 gings, and all similar uses, when made porous by my perforation process.
A point-carrying roller is old, as a structure, in entirety, practically, however, my new and novel method of making this roller, causes its construction to be, mechanically, possible, and commercially feasible.
Referring to the appended drawing, Fig. l is a side view of the roller, with a part of the side broken away to show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a section, at the center line of the roller, and Fig. 3 is a greatly enlarged section, of the outer part, showing method of holding needles in place. Fig. 4 is a section, through the eyes of the needles, showing the method of holding them in place.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts, throughout the several views.
A shaft, or central member 1, carries flanges 2 and annular plates 3 and 4, which are held together by bolts '7.
Needles 5, with eyes 6, arranged in radially annular position, are positioned, between plates 3, with their eye ends butting against plates 4.
Plates a are slightly irregular in circumferen- 0 tial outline, in order to position needles irregularly, as to protrusive distance, past the edges of plates 3.
Needle eyes 6 are laid fiat between annular strips of semi-plastic tape material (such as tire 5 tape 9) which strips are attached to plate 3.
The upper ends of needles 5 are similarly held between strips of semi-plastic tape material 8, which are likewise attached to plate 3.
After needles have been positioned, liquid material, such as glue, shellac, or the like, is
poured upon plates 3 to fill the interstices between adjacent needles and to hold them laterally.
Upon assembly of a series of these plates 3 and 4 each with needles in place, tension on bolts '7 pulls all plates together, forcing needles 5 still further into plastic tapes 8 and 9 and holding them firmly in place.
This pressure also forces a part of the semiplastic tape into the eyes of the needles, thereby, tending to prevent their radial withdrawal.
It is evident that a roller, built of such units, will be adjustable, as to length, and will have great structural strength.
This roller may be either passed over the material, or the material drawn under it for perforation. A particular feature of my invention is that the needle points are of slightly irregular protrusion and spacing, thereby causing irregular and pore-like holes in the perforated material, similar to the pores in leather.
I claim:
1. An intrusive perforating means for strip material comprising a central member, a series of alternately large plates and small plates of irregular circumference, mounted on the central member, annular rows of needle points held between the larger plates with their butt ends against the irregular circumference of the smaller plates, and means for drawing the plates together to hold the needles in position.
2. In a roller for intrusive perforating, a central member, a series of alternately larger annular plates and smaller plates of irregular outer circumference mounted on one central member, annular rows of needle points between the larger annular plates with their butt ends against the irregular circumference of the smaller plates and their points extending irregularly beyond the outer circumference of the larger plates, semiplastic material between the larger annular plates for holding the needle points in substantially radial position, and tension means for drawing all the parts together in assembly.
3. A point carrying roller for the intrusive perforation of material comprising; a central member, a series of annular plates mounted on the central member, strips of semi-plastic material disposed between said plates, needles arranged in substantially radial position between the strips of semi-plastic material, and means for drawing all the parts together to cause eyeengagement of the needles with the semi-plastic strips.
4. The combination in a roller for irregularly intrusive perforation of strip material, of a central member, annular plates mounted on the central member, semi-plastic material between the annular plates, rows of needles positioned radially and held by the semi-plastic material, and tension means to bring the annular plates s. a m comprising a plurali y of annular plates, semi-plastic material disposed ebetweentheplateaneedleswitheyespositioned in the semi-plastic material-and tensionmeans. todrawtheannularplatestogethersoastoeifect eye-engagement of the needles with the semiplastic material disposed between the plastic material;
