PARKINSON CONTAINER 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 25, 1952 Enventor Gtforneg 5 Patented May 15, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER Application April 23, 1932, Serial No. 607,070
Claims.
The invention relates to containers.
The object of the invention is to provide a head closure construction including a removable head and fastening means for holding the cover in ap- 5 plied position on the container. More particularly in accordance with the present invention, the cover is constructed to provide a reinforcing metal ring portion which carries the cover disk and which also is of a channel formation to engage over and reinforce the sides of the body at the mouth. Furthermore, this reinforcing ring of the cover is provided with an outwardly extending annular bead which provides reinforcement for the web of the channel and also cooperates with the fastening means so as to insure an efiicient gripping engagement thereof and also provides for an efficient reinforcement of the clip or fastening means itself.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a container embodying the invention, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of the container;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view similar to Fig. 2 0 showing certain modifications.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the container body showing certain modifications.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 6 designates the siding of the container, for example, a pail, and 7 the head or chime ring portion secured to the siding of the body by adhesive and also by the wire staples 8. The siding 6 and the chime ring '7 are generally formed of laminated paper or fibre construction. The staples 8 are 0 in the form of strip material bent to form a staple having legs 9 which are forced through the ring 7 and siding 6 and bent or crimped over at their inner ends 10 against the siding and in the present instance the intermediate portion 11 of the staple is raised at its central part to from a part of the covering locking means hereinafter described. These staples provide fiat wire stitches for securely holding the chime ring 7 to the siding 6. The head or cover structure comprises a metal ring member 12 and a fibre disk 13 to the periph eral portion of which the ring member 12 is firmly secured and clamped. The ring member 12 is generally in the form of a band or sheathing pref erably of thin sheet steel or other suitable sheet metal and is usually formed from a suitable strip of material whose ends are clamped or secured together in known manner to form a continuous ring. The band has a folded together portion intermediate its top and bottom edges forming a flange 14 engaging the top of the disk 13 and its lower edge 15 is bent over into clamping engagement with the head or disk 13 whereby the head, adjacent its outer edge, is firmly held or clamped within the recess thus formed. The portion of the band above the head is formed into a ring of generally channel shaped section having a side 16 engageable with the inner side of the siding 6, a top or transverse web portion 1'7 engageable with the outer edge of the mouth of the container and a side 18 engageable with the outer side of the chime member. Thus it will be noted that the metal ring or band 12 fits over the upper end of the mouth of the container so as to reinforce the same against lateral distortion and also secures the head 13 in place at the mouth of the container. An upstanding or outwardly projecting head 19 is formed in a part of the transverse portion 17 of the band 12 and acts to reinforce this portion and also aid in efficiently securing the head to the container.
For securing the cover structure to the container, I provide a plurality of clips 20. Each of these clips is formed from a suitable strip of stiff sheet metal which has been previously formed to fit over and engage the channelled portion of the ring or band 12 previously described and to extend downwardly therefrom to provide a leg portion 21 which is adapted to be pushed through the opening provided between the raised portion 11 and the chime ring 7 and then have its end 22 bent back over this intermediate portion of the staple 8 so as to firmly secure the head to the container and the clip to the siding. To facilitate this action and to provide a certain drawing action of the clip so as to bring the head structure into firm engagement with the body of the container the tongue portion 21 is initially bent or grooved as indicated at 23 so as to provide a bend line to cooperate with the lower edge 24 of the staple in the aflixing of the clip as previously described. This initial bend in the clip will also cause it to break after being bent back and forth several times. With this construction it will be noted that the clip has a bead portion 25 at the outer edge of the band of the cover and this arrangement forms an eflicient interlocking connection between the clip and the cover to provide an effective seal. It also has the effect of forming a corrugation in the clip to strengthen its structure and prevent a ready release of the inner side 26 of the clip from the head when in applied position.
As shown in Fig. 1, the clips are radially spaced above the upper portion of the container, each clip cooperating with a staple in the manner previously described to firmly secure the cover in place.
In some instances where materials of the container are especially subject to attack of moisture, a gasket 27 of rubber or other suitable material is interposed in the form of a ring between the outer edge of the container and the band 12 as shown in Fig. 4. Also, the top of the container, that is the mouth portion may have a protecting strip or tape 28 as shown in Fig. 5, disposed thereover to prevent the edge from becoming frayed from repeated removal and insertion of the cover.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a container, the combination with the siding, of a removable cover including a head and a metal cover band secured to said head and having an outwardly extending portion in the form of a ring, channel shaped in cross section, and adapted to engage over said siding at the mouth, said ring having an outwardly extending annular bead formed therein and projecting from the outer edge of the siding, a plurality of metal clips engaging said ring and bead, v
and means for securing said clips to the siding.

In a container, the combination with the body of the container, of a removable cover including a head and a metal cover band secured to said head, said cover band having an outwardly extending portion in the form of a ring, channel shaped in cross section, and adapted to engage over said body at the mouth, said ring having an outwardly extending annular bead formed thereinv and projecting from the outer edge of the siding, a plurality of metal clips engaging said ring and bead and having tongues,
and staples secured to the body with which the tongues of said clips are engageable.

In a container, the combination with the body of the container, of a removable cover including a head and a metal cover band secured to said head, said cover band having an outwardly extending portion in the form of a ring, channel shaped in cross section, and adapted to engage over said body at the mouth, said ring having an outwardly extending annular bead formed therein and projecting from thesouter edge of the siding, a plurality of metal clips engaging said ring and bead and extending to a position adjacent said head, and means for anchoring said clips to the body.
5. In a container, the combination with the siding of the container having a reinforcing chime ring at the mouth thereof, of metal staples securing said chime ring to the siding and having transverse portions spaced from the outer side of said chime ring, a removable cover including a head and a metal cover band secured to said head and having an outwardly extending portion in the form of a ring, channel shaped in cross section, and adapted to engage over said siding at the mouth, said ring having an outwardly extending annular bead formed therein and projecting from the outer edge of the siding, and a plurality of flat metal clips engaging said ring and bead and having bendable engagement with said transverse portions of said staples.
