IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,757, dated October 2, 1877; application tiled To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN FULKERSON, of Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improved fence..' Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same, taken through the line as as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a lever and hoops for tightening the wire part of the fence.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the fence for which Letters Patent No. 191,113 were issued to A. S. Ghansy, May 22, 1877, so as to make it more effective in use, while being very durable, very substantial, readily moved from place to place, and inexpensive in manufacture.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

A are the lower or inverted-V supports, B are the upper or X supports, G are the boards, and D are the riders, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. E is a wire, which is passed through the upper supports B at their points of intersection, so as to be between the boards 0 and the riders D, and thus prevent cattle from putting their heads between said boards and riders and throwing off said riders.

The riders D are secured in place by wires F, attached to the supports B above said riders.

Below the boards C are placed four, more or less, parallel wires, G, which are held at the proper distance apart by blocks H, to which they are secured by staples or other suitable means. The set of wires G are supported from the boards 0 by wires I, which are passed through or around said boards C, and around the upper wire G. The ends of the section of wires G are secured to blocks J. K are short posts, which are firmly set in the ground near the end blocks J of the sections. The wires G are drawn taut, and are then secured to the posts K by wires L, passed around said post-s K, and around the end blocks J. M is a lever, to which are hinged two hooks, N. The lever M and hooks N are used for drawing the sections of wire G taut, by placing the hooks N around the blocks J or the post K, and resting the lever M against the other of said parts, so that by operating the said lever the wires G may be drawn taut and held until the wires L have been applied.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the fence A B C I), of the wires G, connected by the blocks H J, supported from the boards 0 by the wires 1, and connected with the posts K by the wires L, substantially as herein shown and described.
