IMPROVEMENT IN STANDS FOR SMOOTHING FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,756, dated October 2, 1877; application filed August 11, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN FREDERICK FRESE, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoothing and Glossing Fabrics, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to means for smoothing and glossing fabrics; and the nature of my invention consists in an adjustable frame or smoothing-board, which is pivoted to stand ards and constructed with a metallic surface, on which the moist and starclied fabrics are smoothed and dried, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a section taken vertically through the smoothingboard and frame. Fig. 2 is a face View of the smoothing-board.

The supporting-frame consists of two standards, A, connected together byhorizontal bars A A. The inner sides of the standards A have L-shaped grooves 0 cut in them, adapted to receive pivots b, which are fixed to the sides of a rectangular frame surrounding a smoothing-board, B. This smoothing-board 13 consists of a backing of solid material, which is covered on one side with zinc, or any other suitable metallic facing.
The board B is adjustable, so that it can be set at any desired angle from a horizontal plane and raised or lowered.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The moist starehed fabrics are spread upon the metallic surface a of the board B, and smoothed out, by any suitable tool, so that they will lie closely. They are then exposed to the sun, or to the heat of a stove, until dry, when it will be found, on removing them, that they are smoothed and glossed as though they were ironed.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The metal-faced board B, adjustably applied to standards A, in the manner and for the purpose described.
