CONTAINER Filed Jan. 5, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet l INVENTOR Char/e1; FM A/zer A TTORNE VS ill Patented May 1, 1934 PTENT to Mich.
Application January 3,
4 Claims.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved container closed or sealed.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view or" the container adjusted for carrying.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts adjusted as in Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a vertical section on line 1-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section on line 5'5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical section on line 6-% of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank from which the container is formed.
Referring to the drawings, my improved container is preferably formed of an integral blank, shown in Fig. 7, comprising aligned side and end walls 1 and 2 and 3, 3, the side wall 2 having a sealing flap 4 which may be glued or otherwise secured to the wall 3 at the opposite end of the blank.
The side walls 1 and 2 are provided with bottom flaps 5 and 6 respectively, these bottom flaps be ing arranged in overlapping relation, the flap 5 having slits 7 therein adapted to receive the tongues 8 on the flaps 6.
The end walls 3 are provided with bottom flaps 9 having interlocking tongues 10. With the blank set up and these interlocking flaps properly adjusted to interlocked position, a very strong bottom is provided.
The side walls 1 and 2 are provided with top flaps l1 and 12 respectively adapted to be disposed in overlapping relation, the fiap 11 having slits 13 adapted to receive the tongues 14 of the flap 12. The flap 11 is provided with a handhold l5 and is scored as indicated by dotted lines at 16 to facilitate folding to the upright or handle position shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6. The flap 12 has Sutherland Paper Company,
Kalamazoo,
1933, Serial No. 649,824!
a hand opening 17 and is scored along the line 16 to facilitate its being folded to handle position.
The opening 17 is closed when the box is in sealed position by the grip flap 18 which is attached along the upper edge of the hand opening 17 to be swung through the opening 15, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
The end walls 3 are provided with cover or top flaps 19 and 20 adapted to be folded to overlap-=- ping relation, the flap 19 having a slot 21 recessed and conformed at 22 to provide inwardly facing locking tongues 23. The flap 20 has a longitudinal slot 24; and is notched and conformed at 25 to provide locking tongues 26, these locking tongues and recesses being adapted to coact when the flaps are folded.
The slots 21 and 24 register when the flaps are folded and in effect provide sectional flaps, the registering slots being adapted to receive the handle portions of the flaps 11 and 12 when they are adjusted to erected positon, the end wall flaps being then folded over the side wall flaps and interlocked to provide supporting means for the handles.
To further strengthen the structure when ad justed for carrying, the flaps l1 and 12 are provided with slits 2'? adapted to receive the locking tongues of the end wall flaps, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, so that the load on the handles is sustained not only by the interlocking end wall flaps, but also to a considerable extent by the side wall flaps, thus distributing the load on all the walls of the container.
My improved container is economical to produce and is strong and rigid when adjusted for carrying, and also forms a suitable sealed package, and may be quickly adjusted to closed position or for carrying.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as adapted primarily for a food package. It will be understood, however, that they are adapted for various products.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A container formed of an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls, overlapping interlocking bottom fiaps on said side walls and on said end walls, overlapping top flaps on the side walls provided with hand openings, longitudinal score lines facilitating bending to handle position, and longitudinally slotted overlapping top flaps on the end walls providing when folded a continuous slot through which the handle portions of the side wall flaps may be disill posed, the sections of said end wall top flaps having interlocking parts, the side wall cover flaps having slits adapted to be engaged by locking means on said end flaps.
2. A container formed of an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls and coacting bottom flaps, overlapping top flaps on said side walls provided with interlocking tongues and slits, said side wall top flaps being provided with handle portions adapted to be disposed in sideby-side upright relation, and longitudinally slotted overlapping top flaps on the end walls providing when folded a continuous slot through which the handle portions of the side wall flaps may be disposed, the sections of said end wall top flaps having interlocking parts, the side wall cover flaps having slits adapted to be engaged by locking means on said end flaps.
3. A container formed of an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls and ooacting bottom flaps, overlapping top flaps on said side walls provided with handle portions adapted to be disposed in side-by-side upright relation, and longitudinally slotted overlapping top flaps on the end walls providing when folded a continuous slot through which the handle portions of the side wall flaps may be disposed, the sections of said end wall top flaps having interlocking parts, the side wall cover flaps having slits adapted to be engaged by locking means on said end flaps.
4. A container formed of an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls and coacting bottom flaps, overlapping top flaps on said side walls provided with interlocking tongues and slits, said side wall top flaps being provided with handle portions adapted to be disposed in side-by-side upright relation, and longitudinally :flaps having interlocking parts.
