This invention relates to roll polishers.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a device for polishing rolls used in rolling metal such as steel and the like.
I am aware that inventions have been made for the purpose of polishing steel rolls and I therefore do not wish to claim the general idea of polishing rolls but I do claim the new and improved structure for doing this work.
In the rolling of steel and other metal products it is desirable to keep the rolls clean from any material that may adhere to the outer circumference of the rolls. When materials become attached to the circumference of the rolls the sheet or article being rolled cannot be reduced without forming rough surfaces. It is very important, in rolling sheet metal, to produce a sheet with a smooth surface.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device for polishing rolls whereby the entire surface of the rolls is kept free from objectionable foreign matter.
A further object is to provide a pair of oppositely disposed polishing members which are caused to travel back and forth and to be reversed automatically.
A further object is to provide means for maintaining uniform tension upon the polishing members as they are caused to travel back and forth.
A still further object is to provide means for adjusting the polishing members in order to control the range of movement as the same is carried back and forth.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds,
the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can
be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with parts broken away showing the same installed upon a rolling mill.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen no that the polishing device is shown in position for use on an upper roll of a rolling mill. It is understood, however, that the device can be used equally as effectively on the lower roll and may be placed at any convenient position in relation to the housing of a rolling mill and the rolls carried by said housing.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that there is provided an ordinary housing 1 of a rolling mill. This housing 1 carries an upper roll 2 and a lower roll 3 which may be driven by any conventional means known to the art and which does not comprise a part of our invention.
By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that there is provided a pair of oppositely disposed shafts 4 which pass through tubular supports 5. Positioned upon one of these shafts 4 there is a driving gear 6 which may be of any ordinary construction but which is shown in the drawings as a worm gear to be rotated by any ordinary worm gear action. Secured to each of the tubular supports 5 there is a drum 7. These drums 7 are each provided with an annular groove 8 for the reception of a weight cord 9 to which is attached a weight if). It will also be seen that upon each of the tubular supports 5 there is secured a tension member 11 with an arm 12 which is in turn attached to a tension spring device 13.
By referring to Figure 5 it will be seen that the tension spring device 13 comprises an enclosed tension spring 14 exerting a pull upon a tension rod 15 attached to the arm 12 in a pivoted manner by means of a pivot 16. By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that this tension spring device 13 is provided with a cap 17 carrying a threaded support rod 18 which is secured to a bracket 19 which is in turn attached to the up per part of the housing 1. It will be seen that this tension spring device 13 may be adjusted by means of an adjusting nut 20.
By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that the inner ends of the shafts 4 are connected in a pivoted manner to a driving shaft 21 by means of pivots 22 and 23. These pivots 22 and 23 are at right angles to each other thereby forming a universal joint in the securing of the driving shaft 21. This driving shaft 21 is provided upon its circumference with a right and left groove 24. with reversing ends. Movably supported upon the driving shaft 21 there is an actuating member 25 carrying a traveling lug 26 which functions in the right and left grooves 24. (See Fig. 2.) This actuating member 25 is provided with a fork end 2'7. Resting within this fork end 27 there is a slidable sleeve 28. This slidable sleeve 28 has its outer ends secured to oppositely disposed polishing blocks 29. This slidable sleeve 28 slides upon a tension shaft 30. This tension shaft 39 is supported by means of brackets 31 secured 'to the inner ends of the tubular supports 5.
The slidable sleeve 28 is provided with a pair of adjustable collars 32. These collars 32 are placed upon the slidable sleeve 28 in such a manner that the fork end 27 is maintained between them. It is evident that as the actuating member 25 is carried back and forth the adjustable collars 32 secured to the slidable sleeve 28 will cause the polishing blocks 29 to move back and forth upon the roll.
It is obvious that the dual tension of the tension spring device 13 and the weight 10 suspended from the drum '7 will cause an even and continuous pressure upon the tension shaft 30, thereby distributing an even and continuous pressure upon the polishing blocks 29.
By referring to Figures 3 and i the polishing blocks 29 and connecting parts will be clearly seen. Figure 3 shows an end view of the polishing block 29 with polishing stones 33 secured in in-turned ends 34. By referring to Figure 4 it will be seen that the in-turned ends 34 are each provided with a recess 35 carrying a cushion sheet 36, preferably of asbestos. Each of the polishing stones 33 is held by means of a compression plate 37 which is held under compression by means of lugs 38. By again referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that the polishing block 29 carries a roller 39 which is positioned centrally between the polishing stones 33, and which travels upon the tension shaft 30.-
What I claim is:-
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of oppositely disposed shafts, a tubular support for each of said shafts, a driving shaft positioned between said oppositely disposed shafts, right and left grooves formed in said driving shaft, an actuating member movably supported upon said driving shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed polishing blocks adapted to be moved back and forth over a roll of a rolling mill, means for holding said polishing blocks under tension consisting of tension spring devices, a tension member, attached to each of said tubular supports, an arm connecting said tension members and said tension spring devices, a drum secured to each of said tubular supports, an annular groove in each of said drums, and a Weight suspended from said drum.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of oppositely disposed shafts, a tubular support for each of said shafts, a driving shaft positioned between said oppositely disposed shafts, right and left grooves formed in said driving shaft, an actuating member movably supported upon said driving shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed polishing blocks adapted to be moved back and forth over a roll of a rolling mill, in-turned ends on said polishing blocks, polishing stones secured within said iii-turned ends, a cushion sheet carried in said polishing blocks, a compression plate holding said polishing stones under compression, means for holding said polishing blocks under tension consisting of tension spring devices, a tension member attached to each of said tubular supports, an arm connecting said tension members and said tension spring devices, a drum secured to each of said tubular supports, an annular groove in each of said drums, and a weight suspended from said drum, substantially described.
3. In a device of the class described, a pair of oppositely disposed shafts, a tubular support for each of said shafts, a driving shaft positioned between said oppositely disposed shafts, right and left grooves formed in said driving shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed polishing blocks, inturned ends on said polishing blocks, polishing stones secured within said in-turned ends, a cushion sheet carried in said polishing blocks, a compression plate holding said polishing stones under compression, an actuating member movably supported upon said driving shaft, a traveling lug carried on said actuating member and functioning within said grooves, a fork end on said actuating member, a. slidable sleeve resting within said fork end and having its outer ends secured to said oppositely disposed polishing blocks, a tension shaft upon which said slidable sleeve travels, a pair of adjustable collars on said slidable sleeve, means for holding said polishing blocks under tension consisting of tension spring devices, a tension member attached to each of said tubular supports, an arm connecting said tension members and said tension spring devices, a drum secured to each of said tubular supports, an annular groove in each of said drums, and a weight suspended from said drum.

In a roll polisher comprisin a pair of oppositely disposed shafts, a tubular support for each of said shafts, a driving shaft positioned between said oppositely disposed shafts, and right and left grooves formed in said driving shaft, the combination of a pair of oppositely disposed polishing blocks, in-turned ends on said polishing blocks, polishing stones secured within said inturned ends, a cushion sheet carried in said polishing blocks, a compression plate holding said polishing stones under compression, an actuating member movabiy supported upon said driving shaft, a traveling lug carried on said actuating member and functioning within said grooves, a fork end on said actuating member, a slidable sleeve resting within said fork end and having its outer ends secured to said oppositely disposed polishing blocks, a tension shaft upon which said slidable sleeve travels, a pair of adjustable collars on said slidable sleeve, together with means for holding said polishing blocks under tension.
5. In a roll polisher comprising a pair of oppositely disposed shafts, a tubular support for each of said shafts, a driving shaft positioned between said oppositely disposed shafts, and right and left grooves formed in said driving shaft, the combination of a pair of oppositely disposed polishing blocks, in-turned ends on said polishing blocks, polishing stones secured within said inturned ends, a cushion sheet carried in said polishing blocks, a compression plate holding said polishing stones under compression, an actuating member movably supported upon said driving shaft, a traveling lug carried on said actuating member and functioning within said grooves, a fork end on said actuating member, a slidable sleeve resting within said fork end and having its outer ends secured to said oppositely disposed polishing blocks, a tension shaft upon which said slidable sleeve travels, a pair of adjustable collars on said slidable sleeve, together with means for holeing said polishing blocks under tension consisting of tension spring devices, a tension member attached to each of said tubular supports, an arm connecting said tension members and said ten-- sion spring devices, a drum secured to each of said tubular supports, an annular groove in each of said drums, and a weight suspended from said drum.
