FURNITURE Filed July 15, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I I I Inventor WQfIr/Pw' By 2mm Patented Apr. 3, 1934 STATES FURNITURE Samuel Harding Watkins, Massillon, Ohio, assignor of one-half to Harry Marshal Worthington, Massillan, Ohio Application July 15, 1932, Serial No. 622,779
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in furniture in general and more particularly to davenports and other seats or chairs and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which one or more lamps are mounted for adjustment on the furniture.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a structure of the aforementioned character which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at 5 low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification,.
taken in connection with the accompanying draw- 29 ings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation, showing a davenport in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section through the lamp supporting bar, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure a is a detail view in top plan, showing the intermediate bar supporting bracket.
Figure 5 is a detail view partially in top plan and partially in horizontal section showing the mounting of the ends of the supporting bar.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a davenport of conventional construction, said davenport being designated generally by the reference numeral 1 and including, of course, a
back 2.
Mounted horizontally on the rear of the back 2 of the davenport 1 is a supporting bar 3 of any suitable material, said bar being of polygonal transverse section. The end portions of the supporting bar 3 are engaged in sockets 4 which are provided therefor on end brackets 5 which project rearwardly from the back 2 of the davenport. The intermediate portion of the supporting bar 3 is supported by a bracket 6 having an eye 7 thereon which encircles the bar 3. The bracket 6 also, of course, projects rearwardly from the back 2.
Mounted for sliding adjustment on the supporting bar 3 are lamps 8 of suitable type which are mounted on eyes 9 which are mounted for sliding movement on the bar 3. As illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawings, the eyes 9 of the lamps 8 are of a shape conforming to that of the bar 3, thus supporting the lamps 8 in an upright position.
In use, the lamps 8 may be conveniently ad-- justed as desired in the rear of the davenport 1 by simply sliding said lamps along the supporting bar 3, as is obvious. It will thus be seen that the lamps may be disposed in the most desired position for reading or other purposes. As many of the lamps as may be found desirable or practical may be provided on the supporting bar 3. Preferably, in the arrangement shown, a lamp is provided on the bar 3 on each side of the intermediate supporting bracket 6. Further, the invention is intended for use in connection with other articles of furniture, such as beds and par ticularly chairs.
It is believed that the many advantages of furniture constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of con- 0 struction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
In combination with an article of furniture 95 having an elongated back, end brackets secured to back and extending rearwardly therefrom, said brackets having laterally extending sockets at the free ends thereof, an intermediate bracket secured to said back and extending therefrom in parallelism with said end brackets, said intermediate bracket having an integral eye at the free end thereof, a rod having an intermediate portion extending through the eye of the intermediate bracket and end portions fitting snugly within said sockets, lamp supporting elements engaged. with said rod and slidable thereon at opposite sides of the intermediate bracket between said intermediate bracket and one of said end brackets, and lamps carried by said lamp supports and extending vertically therefrom to terminate above the upper edge of the aforementioned back of said article of furniture.
