IMPROVEMENT IN OILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [95,340, dated September 18, 1877; application filed May 23, 1877.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER H. CHAMBER- LAIN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying dra wings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements on the patent for oilers granted on the 25th day of April, 1854, to De Witt O. Smiley and consists, in combination with an oil-can hav ing a flexible bottom and a valve-diaphragm above it, of an adjustable detachable deliverytube that is adj ustable up and down in a socket in the annular diaphragm, by which the following advantages are obtained First, the delivery-tube can be removed entirely from the socket in the diaphragm when the oil-can requires to be cleaned, filled, or repaired; and, secondly,I am able to adjust said deliverytube up and down in the aforesaid socket, so as to regulate the annular air-space between the upper end of the delivery-tube and the inside of the nozzle, for the purpose of governing the flow of oil from the nozzle, which sometimes may be required to be quite large, and in other cases only a few drops at a time.
I wish distinctly to state that I do not claim anything as set forth in said De Witt O. Smileys patent, but merely the improvements thereon, as above set forth.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of my improved oiler; and Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1.

it represents the oil-receptacle, with its flexible bottom b and nozzle 0, in the usual manner. (1 represents the diaphragm located above the flexible bottom b. e represents the valve covering the holef on the diaphragm d. g represents a short pipe, secured to the diaphragm d, into which fits the lower end of the movable delivery-tube h, the upper end of which terminates near the upper end of the nozzle 0, so as to form an annular air-space at that place between said delivery-tube and the inside of the nozzle 0.
The delivery-tube h is made adjustable in the socket g of the diaphragm d, by which I can move said tube up and down in the socket g, so as to regulate the annular air-space between the upper end of said deliverytube and the inside of the conical nozzle 0, thereby regulating the admission of air to the can a, and the flow of the oil from it. The tube h can also be detached entirely from the socket g, which is very desirable when the can is to be cleaned, filled, or repaired.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim The combination, with the receptacle a, its flexible bottom I), nozzle 0, and valve diaphragm d cf, of the socket g and the adjustable detachable delivery-tube h, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
