The present invention relates to improvements in look construction and has particular reference to key operated locks.
An important obj ect of the invention is the pro- Vision of a lock of the key operated type equipped with a plurality of safety devices designed to prevent tripping or unauthorized operation thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock having means for releasably locking the transverse knob catch thereof.
A further object of the invention is the 'provision of a lock having a slidable safety bolt and mechanism co-operating with the safety bolt which will obviate operation thereof with a usual key and require adjustment by additional elements and tools.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of the above character having adjustable cover means and mechanism for operating the cover means to cover one or both of the key holes.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of the above character which will be highly burglar proof, durable in construction and which may be operated without great diiculty.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.

Referring to the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 20 designates 70 the lock casing which is of conventional construction provided in the front with the usual bolt opening and with an interiorly threaded opening 21. In one side wall of the casing is formed an elongated key slot 22 enlarged at both ends.
The numeral 23 indicates the main operating key which is adapted to be inserted into the key slot 22. For the operation of several safety devices I provide a tool 24 embodying a flat head plate provided with an interiorly threaded central 80 opening adaptedto carry therein an exteriorly threaded plug 25. Extending radially from the plate of the tool is a pin 26, a relatively narrow Wedge-shaped blade 27 and a wide relatively short wedge-shaped blade 28. On the end of the tool 85 handle is formed a slotted extension 29.
In the upper portion of the casing is mounted a transversely slidable spring-bolt 31 having a bevelled head 32. Projecting inwardly from the bolt 31 are a pair of spaced arms 33 provided on 90- their inner ends with lugs 34 engageable with detents 35 projecting radially from a sleeve 36. TheY sleeve 36 is fixed on the intermediate portion of a transversely extending knob shaft 37. The head 32 Aof the spring bolt is normally urged 'to 95- an extended position by means of a tension spring 38 having one end attached to the casing and the opposed end to the upper arm of the bolt.
Attached to the spring bolt 31 and arranged to project between the arms 33 thereof is a slot- 100 ted key 39 adapted to engage, in locking position, one end of a pivot bar 410. The pivot bar 40 is pivotally connected with the shaft 37 and projects through an elongated slot therein. The inner end of the bar 40 is pivotally connected 105 with a rod 41. The opposed end of the rod is pivotally connected to a rotatable slotted crank pin 42.
The pivot bar 40 is adjusted by engaging the blade 27 of the tool 24 with the crank pin 42 1'10 par and rotating the pin so as to swing to outer end of the bar into the groove in the key 39 to lock the shaft or to swing the bar out of engagement with this key to enable rotary operation of the shaft.
In the intermediate portion of the lock casing 20 is secured a cylindrical connecting member 44 having formed, integral therewith, a depending plate 45 reduced at the lower end to form a narrow depending tongue 46. In the lower portion of the casing is disposed a longitudinally slidable safety bolt 47 provided in the rear portion with a vertical longitudinally extending slot 48. A threaded pin 49 isk attached to the bolt 47 and projects upwardly therefrom. A coiled tension spring 50, having one endattached to the plate 45 and the opposed end to the pin 49, is adapted to normally urge the bolt 47 to a retracted position. Adjacent therear end, the divided side sections of the bolt 47 are formed with corresponding slots 50 having formed, at the edges, a plurality of notches 51.
Suspended within the casing and having the upper end secured to the rear wall thereof, is a spring arm 52 normally disposed to assume an inclined downwardly directed position and bent at the lower extremity to form a substantially horizontal catch forming extension 53.V Rigidly connected to the intermediate portion of the spring arm 52 is a longitudinally extending offset adjusting rod 54 formed so that the free end normally extends within the opening 21 in the front wall of the casing.
Journalled transversely in the slotted portion "i of the bolt 47 is a pivot pin 55 having a radial arm projecting therefrom turned on its outer extremity into a trip head 56. The trip head 56 is disposed in and swings in the side of the center section in the rear end portion of the bolt 47.
During installation of the lock and at such times that it is desired to operate the safety bolt with the key 23 only, the plug is removed from the opening 21 thereby permitting the spring arm 52 to assume its normal inwardly projecting position in the casing. When-thus disposed, the catch 53 rests on the upper edge of the bolt 47 and even though the bolt be fully extended the catch will not project inwardly to engage the notches 51.
When the plug 25 is threadedly inserted into the opening 21, it will engage the free end of the rod 54 and force the rod to a retracted position so that the spring arm 52 isk resiliently forced adjacent the rear wall of the casing and the catch 53 assumes a, retracted position on the bolt47. When the bolt 47 is actuated to an extended position, it cannot be returned through the medium of a key 23 inasmuch as the catch 53 will have been resiliently forced to engage the notches 51. In order to retract the safety bolt 47, it is necessary to insert the notched extension 29 of the auxiliary tool into the lower enlargement of the key slot where the extension will engage radially extending ribs on the end of the pivot pin 55 to rotate the pin and cause the head 56 to swing upwardly into engagement with the catch 53. The catch is thus raised from the notches 51 and the main key 23 may be rotated to retract the safety bolt.
The main key 23 slidably actuates the bolt 47 by causing a bore at the end of the key to rotatably lit over a pin 58 projecting from the plate 45 and, by rotating the key, causing the nib to engage a pin 59 attached to and projecting laterally from the safety bolt.
In order to provide means for covering the key holes in the sides of the casing toprevent the insertion of a key or to obviate the passage of objectionable matter or gases therethrough, I provide, at each side of the casing, a horizontally slidable cover plate 61 slidably mounted in lower and upper parallel guide strips 62. Adjacent the cover plate 61 is pivotally mounted a vertical rocker bar 63 having pivotally connected to the extremities thereof, a pair of pins 64. The outer end portions of the pins 64 are slidably mounted in supporting sleeves 65 disposed in registration with small apertures in the end plate of the casing. The rocker bar 63 is connected to the cover plate 6l by means of a connecting link 66. Thus, by inserting the element 26 of the auxiliary tool into one or the other of the sleeves 65 and slidably actuating one of the pins 64, the bar 63 may be adjusted to swing the cover 61 to a key-hole covering position or to an uncovering position at one side thereof.
It is to be understood that the form of my in'- vention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and. that various changes as to the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claimt- 1. A lock of the character described comprising a casing, a key actuated bolt slidably mounted in the casing, a catch engageable with the bolt, means for adjusting the catch whereby the latter will engage the bolt in extended position to prevent retracting movement by the bolt operati-ng key, and means on the bolt for releasing the said catch.
