WRAPPING PAPER ATTACHMENT FOR SHOW CASES Filed March 21, 1933 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Mar. 27 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRAPPING PAPER ATTACHMENT FOR SHOW CASES Clement V. Hill, Trenton, N. J., assignor to C. V. Hill & 00., Inc., Trenton, N. .L, a corporation of New Jersey This invention relates to a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, for supplying wrapping paper in desired amounts from a roll for wrapping up vended goods of various kinds, and
the present invention'constitutes an improvement upon the construction shown in my prior application filed December '7, 1932, Serial No. 646,185. .1.
In many merchandise stores the available space is so taken up by fixtures and stock that there is no room for the placing of a wrapping paper supply fixture without disposing it in an awkward and inconvenient or obstructing position.
One object of my invention is to provide a wrapping paper supply device which may be applied as an attachment to a show caseor counter in such manner as to be in a noneobstructing position and yet in a position to permit ready and convenient removal of the wrapping paper as desired for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character in which the supply roll may be housed within the show case or counter in.an inconspicuous position while acutter and supporting and guiding means for. the
free end of the paper sheet are disposed: at a point on the exterior of the counter convenient for use without the operator assuming a bending or other awkward posture.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting for the supply roll supporting frame which may be swung out of the show case to a position permitting ready removal of a depleted roll and substitution of a new or full roll therefor, together with means for firmly supporting the roll supporting frame in swung-out position. V
Still another object of the invention is to pro vide brackets for attachment to an elevated rear 4o portion of the show case for supporting a delivery roll and a combined brake and cutter, which brackets are constructed in a novel manner to permit application and removal of the supply roll and combined brake and cutter in a ready and convenient manner and without the necessity of detaching the brackets;
Still another object of the invention is to provide a mount for the brackets ensuring attachment of the brackets always in the right position and in accurate alinement to support the delivery roll and combined brake and cutter inexact par allelrelation so as to secure a perfect working action of these parts and to prevent binding or other imperfect action in the event that the brackets were attached in a crooked manner.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end elevation, partly in section, of'
a refrigerator show case, to which may invention is shown in the present instance applied, and. illustrating the attachment as applied thereto for 7 use.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the structure shown' in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view of parts of the attachment and a part of the show case shown in Fig. l on an enlarged scale, and showing in full and dotted lines respectively the supply roll supported in normal position and the position to which it maybe swung for removal of an old roll andapplication of a new one. a
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, on line 55 of Fig. 3, through one of the standards of the'roll supporting frame. 7
Figs. 6 and '7 are opposite end elevations of the delivery roll and combined brake and cutter supporting brackets, showing the delivery roll and combined brake and cutter supported thereby.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on line 88 of Fig. 6.
. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the supporting brackets and the adjacent ends of the delivery roll and combined brake and cutter adapted to be mounted therein.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the other supporting bracket and a portion of its supporting plate.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a show case of any ordinary, conventional or suitable construction, and which, in the present instance, is shown as a refrigerator show case of a well known type. This case is provided with a base compartment 2 having a doorway opening 3 in the lower portion of its rear wall, the upper portion 4 of which wall may form the rear wall of an upper compartment of the show case.
In accordance with my invention, I dispose and house within the compartment 2 a supporting frame 5 for a supply roll, drum or cylinder 6 on which the roll of paper 7 is wound which frame comprises a baseboard or plate 8 from whiclpri'se a pair of spaced standards 9 each provided big-13$?- inner face with a pair of inwardly extending verk tical flanges 10 connected at their lower ends by 110 a U-shaped portion 10. The U-shaped portions 10' form bearings for the end journals of the roll in which said journals may turn or rotate to allow the paper to unwind, while the spaces between the flanges 10 form guide channels or guideways 11 slidably receiving the ends of a metal brake bar 12 which rests upon the upper surface of the paper roll so as to oppose a predetermined resistance to turning of the roll and unwinding of the paper therefrom. The channels also serve as guideways leading to and from the bearings 10 allowing an old roll, i. e., a roll from which the paper has been exhaused, to be easily removed and a new roll to be as readily applied in its place.
The base 8 rests upon the floor 13 of the compartment 2 adjacent to the opening 3, and is hinged at its rear edge, as at 14, to the floor in such manner that the supporting frame and roll may be swung from a normal upright position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 in which it is housed within the compartment 2, to a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which the roll and frame standards extend horizontally outward through the opening in such manner as to permit a roller 6 from which the supply of paper has been exhausted to be removed and a fresh roll substituted in its place, the rolls being readily removable from and applicable to the bearings 10 via the channels 11 when in the latter-named position. By this means an old roll may be removed and a new one substituted in its place without the necessity of inserting and removing rolls through the opening or doorway 3 and without the operator bending over or assuml ing an awkward and difficult position in order to carry out these operations.
Mounted on the outer sides of the standards 9 are supporting legs 15, each hinged at one end, as at 16, to its standard which normally hang pendent and parallel with the standard when the supporting frame 5 is in normal position. When the frame 5 is swung outward and rearward to the horizontal position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, these legs 15 drop by gravity in the swinging action to a vertical position in which they rest from the hinges 14 and the show case.
" opening 3 and upwardly alongside the upper rear wall portion 4 on which is mounted a supporting and guide roll 20, this roll 20, and preferably also the paper holding rolls 6, being provided with a peripheral coating or covering 21 of rubber, felt or other suitable material to which the paper tends to adhere and against which the paper frictionally bears to prevent it from slipping. The roll 20 is positioned at a convenient level upon the rear of the counter to enable it and the free "end of the paper strip to be manipulated by a clerk or operator in a convenient manner and without the necessity of the clerk stooping or assuming an awkward posture. The extremity of the paper strip is designed to rest upon the top surface of the roller 20 and to be held in contact therewith by a combined cutter and brake member 22, of V-shaped, triangular or inverted trough-shaped form and comprising downwardly diverging front and rear walls 23 and 24 and end walls 25, said end walls being shorter than the front and rear walls and concavely curved at their lower edges to lit the surface of the roll 20. The member 22 rests by gravity upon the roll or intervening portion of the paper sheet and is of sufiicient weight to hold the roll and paper against slippage of the paper or casual rotary movement of the roll, the lower edges of its end walls and the inner face of the lower portion of its front wall forming a friction brake surface holding the roll 16 and portion of the sheet engaged thereby from relative movement. The rear wall 24 of the member 22 also acts in this connection as a stop surface to hold the paper sheet from rearward movement in the event that there is any tendency of the sheet to slip beneath the surfaces of the front and end walls of the member 22. The front wall 23 of the member 22 is designed to serve as a cutter, and to this end its free edge is beveled or sharpened to form a cutting edge 26 along which a desired portion of the sheet which has been pulled forward beyond such edge by the operator may be drawn and thus severed from the remainder of the sheet to supply a wrapping sheet for use.
As shown, the roll 20 and combined cutter and brake member 22 are arranged in superposed and parallel relation and are mounted between and on bracket members 27 and 28 carried by a plate 29 secured by screws or other suitable fastenings 30 to the wall portion 4. The brackets 27 and 28 are respectively provided with flanges 31 and 32 extending outwardly therefrom at right angles thereto. These flanges are provided with bearings and retaining slots 33 and 35 to respectively receive and hold the roll 20 and member 22. The slots 33 which receive and hold the roll 20 are alike in form, and each is inclined upwardly and rearwardly at an oblique angle to the vertical and opens at its upper edge through the rear vertical edge of the flange, said slots forming open bearings receiving the journals 34 at the ends of the roll 20 so as to allow said journals to freely rotate therein. The inclined arrangement of these slots or open bearings 33 provides for the ready removal of a depleted roll from the brackets and ready substitution of a new or filled roll therefor, by removing and applying the rolls at a proper angle of inclination, while the angle at which the slots are formed effectually prevents any casual outward movementand displacement of the roll journals therefrom. The means in the bracket flanges 31 and 32 for receiving and holding. the combined brake and cutter member 22 comprises elongated vertical slots 35 and 36, respectively, which receive angular lugs or projections 37 upon the ends of the member 22. The slot 36 is a closed slot, that is, does not open through any of the edges of the flange 32 in which it isformed, while the. slot 35, on the contrary, is provided'with an oblique extension 38 projecting laterally at anv upward and rearward angle therefrom and intersecting its upper portion and opening through the rear edge of the flange 31. This slot extension 38. forms an entrance and exit way allowing the angular lug or projection 37 at one end of the. member 22 to be readily inserted into or withdrawn from the slot 35. to enable ready application and removal of the member 22 to and from the bracket members to be effected, In applying the bracket member, it will be understood that the lug. 37 at one end thereof is. fitted in the slot 36 of. bracket 38 and then the lug 37 at theopposite end thereof is inserted into the slot in the other bracket plate 27through the opening 38. and the lugs 37 then allowed to drop down into the, lower portions of the slots 35 and 36 to dispose the member 22 in proper working position above and upon the roll 20 and the paper sheet in contact therewith. The slots 35 and 36 are of such length as to allow the member 22 to have the proper degree of vertical motion to compensate for different thicknesses of paper and to admit of a ready and convenient threading of the free end of the sheet between the member 22 and the roll 20, as well as to admit of the proper angular adjustments of the member 22 with relation to the brackets in applying and'removing said member. It will be seen that this construction and mode of mounting the bracket plates adapts the delivery roll and the combined brake and cutter to be readily and conveniently applied to said br'ackets without detaching the latter from their supporting Plate, or detaching the supporting plate from the show case or counter, and also that by the provision of the supporting plate to which the bracket plates are attached in fixed relative positions to each other an accurate positioning of the bracket plates to effect registration of the bearing and keeper slots will be automatically eifected upon the application of the bracket plates to their supporting plate, whereby the delivery roll and combined brake and cutter will be mounted for a smooth action and without liability of binding, such as would be liable to occur if the bracket plates were independently attached to the show case or counter. .In other words, the use of the supporting plate .prevents irregular or crooked mounting of the bracket plates upon a show case or counter which otherwise would be apt to occur, especially when the work is done by inexperienced hands.
It will be understood from the foregoing that upon the placing of a paper roll on its supporting frame 5 within the compartment 6 the free end of the paper sheet may be extended outwardly through the doorway in the form of a feeding strip or portion which may be carried upward and threaded between the roll 20 and member 22,
leaving just a suflicient portion of its extremity projecting beyond the cutting edge to be conveniently gripped by the operator, so that whenever desired the required amount of papermay be drawn outward to form the wrapping sheet of required size which is to be severed from the strip. This severing operation is performed, as previously stated, by drawing the projecting portion of the sheet along the cutting edge of the cutter, whereupon the brake surface of the member 22 will operate to prevent the roll 20 from turning and/ or the free end of the paper strip from sliding backward in rear of the plane of said brake surface, so that the operator may grip the roll 20 and turn it forward to again project the extremity of the sheet beyond the cutter, thus disposing the sheet in preparedness for the ensuing dispensing action. Whenever it is neces sary to remove a depleted supply roll and to substitute a new or full roll in its place, this may be effected, as previously explained, by swinging the supporting frame outwardly to dispose it in convenientposition to allow such operations to be performed. Also in the event that it should be necessary to apply or remove the dispensing roll and combined brake and cutter, this operation in either case may be effected without disturbing the bracket supporting plate or removing the brackets therefrom.
It is'to be understood that while the slot 36 is shown as a closed slot, this slot 36 may be made aduplicate in construction of the slot 35, that is to say, each slot 35 and 36 may be provided with. an entrance and exit way 38.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my new and improved.
wrapping paper attachment for show cases will be readily understood without a further and extended description and it will be seen that the invention provides an attachment of this character which is readily applicable to counters and show cases in such manner as to be partlyhoused Within the show case or counter and partly disposed upon the exterior thereof so as to occupy but little room space in the store room, and arranged so as to be conveniently operated and disposed so that it will not form an obstruction to free passage and movements of clerks or attendants in serving customers and performing other duties. Also it will be seen that the invention provides an attachment which allows ready removal of supply rolls from which the paper supply is exhausted and substitution of full rolls therefor, and the retention of the free end of the paper strip in position to be readily gripped and severed for the removal of wrapper sheets of the desired sizes whenever required. The invention, furthermore, is of simple construction and may be applied for use at a comparatively low cost.
While the construction disclosed for purpose of exemplification is preferred, it will, of course,
.beunderstood that changes in the form, arrangement and details of construction may be varied within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
