Description

UNITE STTES WILLIAM L. TYNER, OF STANFORD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FOR LAVING TILE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l95,l6, dated September 11, 1877 application filed August 7, 1877. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. TYNER, of Stanford, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implement for Laying Tile; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view.
This invention relates to improvements in an implement for laying tile in ditches; and the invention consists in the combination of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A in the drawing represents the handle of my improved implement, which should be of sufficient length to reach the bottom of a ditch by a person standing at the top of the same. B and 0 represent two jaws, the jaw B being permanently secured to one end of the handle, and at right angles thereto. The jaw G is fitted to slide in a groove, a, in the handle, and upon a rod, (1, arranged parallel with the handle, and also securing the jaw O in place. The rod dis secured to the jaw B and post D. Said jaw O is provided with a rod, E, which is connected to the pivoted hand-lever F by a rod, G. Upon the rod E, between the post D and jaw (J, is arranged a spiral or other equivalent spring, H, which forces the jaw 0 toward the stationary jaw B, so that a tile placed between the jaws is held securely therein.
The implement is operated by the tile-layer at the top of the ditch, the jaw B being inserted in the tile, so that the spring-jaw 0 will clasp the upper side of the tile as it is to be laid in the ditch. The tile can then be lowered or placed in the ditch in the required position, after which the jaw O is released from contact with the tile by the spring-lever, thus allowing the implement to be removed by the tile-layer without disturbing the tile.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described implement for laying tile, consisting of the handle and jaw A B, movable spring-jaw 0, having rod E, and lever and connecting-rod F G, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM L. TYNER.
