The object of the present invention is to pro vide a simple and compact arrangement of fan and ducts whereby a current of air may be passed over a drawing block, whether one in aseries on a bench or operated individually. A further object is'to subdivide such current of air and direct the individual streams in. the most effective cooling relation to the wire that is being wound upon the block. e
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawlugs and the following description setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

For the purpose of illustrating the present im= proved construction of cooling means, such means are shown in connection with a wire drawing mechanism of the individually driven type such as will be found disclosed in U. S. Patent No. 1,723,313, issued to P. V. Tippet under date of August 6, 1929. It will be understood, however,
that such'coolingmeans are not limited in their application to any such particular type of block but may be advantageously incorporated in benches comprising a plurality of blocks, particularly where the latter are driven by separate motors.
The main frame 1 of the single block wire drawing mechanism illustrated in the drawings is a rectangular box-like structure, preferably formed.-

The upper portion of such frame is partially closed off by an annular plate 3 that forms a top for the machine, and located a: short distance therebelow is a correspondingly annular 'webor partition 4, the inner edge of which is joined with the corresponding edge of said top 3 by a vertical wall 5 so as to form a chamber 6 of the general extent. and substantially annular shape clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
The drum or block 7, which is in general of standard construction, is mounted on the upper end of a vertical spindle 8, the lower end of which is journaled in a bearing 9 provided in a supplemental frame 10 of general cylindrical form, Such frame is removably supported, by means of an integral flange 11 about its upper edge, "the circular opening defined by the wall 5, such flange resting on the annular top 3, as shown in Fig. 2, and being bolted or otherwise removably secured to such top. The motor will desirably be enclosed, as shown in Fig. 1, in a guard 22, the top 23 of which lies on a level with the top 3 of the main frame, and
jointly supported; upon guard top 23 and main frame top 3 is a vertical shield 24 that more or less completely encloses the mechanism on top or the main frame.
The web a that forms the floor of the chamber 6 in the main frame is depressed at one corner of the latter to form an inlet connection 25 which freely communicates with the interior of the shell that forms the supplemental frame on which the motor is mounted, as just described above. This shell, in addition to thus support-- I the top 3 of the main frame, and thence through aligned openings 28 into the interior of an annular shield 29 that surrounds the lower end of block 7. Such end, it will be noted (see Fig. 2). is in the form of an outwardly directed flange 7a, just above which the cylindrical wall of the drum is provided with a series of radial apertures '71). The shield 29 risesto a level somewhat above such flange 7a, and is itself provided with a rebent lip or downwardly directed flange 30 that has a close workingfit with the edge of flange 7a and is provided with a series of apertures 31 located adjacent the upper surface of flange 7a. The rebent lip 30 serves as a means for preventing the coils of wire, when they become loosened, from dropping down and getting caught between the drum flange 7a and the shield 29'.
The operation of the machine may now be described, giving special attention to the means provided for cooling the drum or block '7 and the coil of wire being wound thereon. The current of air supplied by the blower 26 to the chamber 6 will build up in the latter a substantial pressure which will be in turn conveyed into the annular space within the shield 29. 'From the latter in turn the air is permitted to escape both into the lower part of the drum or block and thence throughthe openings 71) formed in the side wall of the latter, and directly through the open ings 31 formed in the downturned flange 30 on the shield itself. It will thus be seen that cooling currents of air are discharged both through and against the vertical wall of the drum or block. Accordingly, not only is such drum or block effectively cooled, but the wire as it is wound upon such block, whether in a relatively few number of turns for an intermediate pass or in a larger coil in a final stage of the drawing operation, will likewise be cooled by the passage of air therethrough' from the interior of the block and the currents of air striking against its exterior.
Other modes of applying the principleof my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:-
1. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a substantially annular chamber connected with a fluid-pressure supply,
a spindle disposed centrally of such chamber, a
drum carried by the end of said spindle with its base contiguous to such chamber, and a hollow shield on said frame surrounding the base of said drum and having a series of apertures in proximity to such base said apertures opening in the direction substantially normal to the surface of said drum, the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame.
2. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a substantiallyannular' each having a series of apertures in proximity to such flange and the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame.
3. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a substantially annular chamber, a spindle disposed centrally of such chamber, a drum carried by the end of said spindle with its base contiguous to such chamber, and a hollow shield on said frame surrounding the base of said drum and having a series of apertures in proximity to such base, the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame, a motor attached to one side of said frame and connected to drive said spindle, and a blower also driven by said motor and connected to supply fluid under pressure to such chamber, and through said aperturesa drum carried by one end of said spindle, a motor attached to said frame and connected to drive said spindle, a blower also driven by said motor, and means adapted to conduct fluid under pressure through said motor and by means of said blower to the interior of said drum, the wall of the latter being apertured to permit escape of 6. a drum carried by one end of said spindle, a motor attached to said frame and having a spindle connected to drive said drum spindle, a blower fan carried by said motor spindle, and means adapted to conduct fluid under pressure through said motor and by means of said blower fan to the interior of said drum, the wall of the latter being apertured to permit escape of such fluid, said means being also adapted to discharge a portion of such fluid at points exterior to said drum but adjacent the wall thereof.
7. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame, a spindle mounted in said frame,
a drum carried by one end of said spindle, a motor attached to said frame and having a spindle connected to drive said drum-spindle, a blower fan carried by said motor spindle, and. means adapted to conduct fluid under pressure through said motor and by means of said blower fan to the interior of said drum, the wall of the latter being apertured to permit escape of such fluid, said means being also adapted to discharge a portion of such fluid at points exterior to said drum but adjacent the wall thereof.
8. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame, a spindle mounted in said frame, a drum carried by one end of said spindle, a removable supplemental frame, an annular flange on said supplemental frame adapted to make a precise fit with a complementary shoulder on ma am.

11. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a drum having an outwardly projecting flange, a hollow shield extending around the outer periphery of and having a rebent lip abutting such flange, such lip and the wall of saiddrum each having a series of apertures in proximity and disposed substantially parallel to the flange on said drum, and means for supplying a cooling fluid under pressure to the interior of said shield and through said apertures to the exterior surface of said drum,
12. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a chamber connected with a fluid-pressure supply, a drum mounted on said frame with its base contiguous to such chamber, and a hollow shield on said frame exteriorly surrounding the base of said drum and having a series of apertures in proximity to such base, said apertures opening in a direction substantially normally and opposed to the exterior surface of said drum, the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame.
13. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a chamber connected with a fluid-pressure supply, a drum mounted on said frame with its base contiguous to such chamber, and a hollow shield on said frame exteriorly surrounding the base of said drum and having a series of apertures in proximity to such base, said apertures opening in a direction substantially normal and opposed to the exterior surface of said drum, the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame at a plurality of spaced points.
14. In wire drawing mechanism, the combination of a frame including a chamber connected with a fluid-pressure supply, a drum mounted on said frame with its base contiguous to such chamher, and a hollow shield on said frame extsriorly surrounding the base of said drum and having a series of apertures in proximity to such base, said apertures opening in a direction substantially normal and opposed to the exterior surface of said drum, the interior of said shield being in communication with the chamber in said frame, the wall of said drum also having a series of apertures and the interior of said drum being in communication with the interior of said shield.
