Description

O. E.' WAIT.
BoBBINs.
No.. 195,059. Panama sept. 11, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR E. WAIT, OE LYNN, ASSIGNOE To THE LAWRENCE SPOOL COMPANY,
' OE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOBBINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,059, dated September 11, 1877; application filed April 6,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR E. WAIT, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Bobbins and Spools, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of quill or pirn bobbins, and has for its Object the protection of their heads or flanges against splitting or accidental abrasion; and it consists in forming said heads or protecting their outer edges by winding ribbons of rawhide, having parallel edges, one or more times circumferentially around the body ofthe bobbin, or the outer edge thereof, and securing it thereto by glue 0r other suitable adhesive material.
Figure l of the dra-wings is an elevation, Fig. 2 an end View, and Fig. 3 a central longitudinal section, of a bobbin illustrating my invention.
A is the body or barrel of the bobbin, made of wood in the usual manner, and provided with a shallow head, B, the inner portion of which is made of wood, in one piece with the barrel A 5 and the outer portion is formed by winding a ribbon of rawhide, d, having parallel edges, one or more times around said head parallel to the axis of the bobbin, and securing it thereto by means ot' glue or other suitable adhesive material.`
C is a round-edged shallow head or bead, formed upon the upper end of the bobbin by winding a narrow band Or ribbon of rawhide,
s o, several times circumferentially around the barrel of the bobbin, with the several layers parallel to the axis of the bobbin, and secured to the barrel and to each other by glue or other suitable adhesive material, and having its outer edge turned to form after the glue and hide are thoroughly dried.
I do not Claim, broadly, the use of rawhide in the manufacture of spools or bobbins, as I am aware that such use is not new 5 but What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A quill or prn bobbin having bands of rawhide d or e applied to its base or tip, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
Executed at Boston this 3d day of April,
