(01. 16-42) This invention relates to slide casters for furniture, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which includes a cap adapted to be snapped or forced over the working or contacting face of the caster proper to protect the same especially when the furniture is in storage or placed on a rough surface, such as concrete or the like.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved slide caster for furniture whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in bottom plan of a caster constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in top plan of a caster as herein disclosed with the fibrous lamination removed to particularly illustrate the locking coaction between a cap and the core.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes a circular plate of sheet metal having a centrally arranged tang 2 struck therefrom and preferably arranged at right angles thereto. The periphery of the plate 1 is provided therearound with a series of outstanding radial fingers 3 having their extremities angularly disposed, as at 3, in the same general direction as the tang 2. The portions between the inner ends of the fingers 3 provide notches 4 in which are engaged cords or kindred strands 5 of fibrous material wrapped around the core or base member B as particularly described and. claimed in my copending application Serial No. 667,915, filed April 25, 1933 of which the present application is partly in continuation.

The cords or strands 5 provide what may be termed a fibrous lamination which is of particular advantage when the furniture to which the caster is applied is rested upon a highly polished surface. These cords or strands 5 are preferably treated with wax or kindred material so that the contact upon a. highly polished surface is rendered more desirable.

This cap 6 is defined by a resilient flange 7 which when the cap is snapped or forced over the fibrous lamination engages between the portions 3' of the fingers 3 and thus eifectively holds the cap in place. The free marginal portion of the cap has forced inwardly therefrom the protuberances 8 which are the parts or elements of the flange 7 which are received between the portions 3' of the fingers 3. The flange 7 outwardly of these protuberances 8 is disposed on an outward angle, as at 9, to facilitate the application of the cap.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a slide caster constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:-

1. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, a fibrous lamination disposed over the outer face of said core, and a protecting cap engageable with the caster and disposed over the entire outer surface of fibrous lamination.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a core, a fibrous lamination disposed over the outer face of said core, and a. protecting cap having a resilient peripheral flange to be snapped upon the caster to hold the cap in place, said cap being disposed over the entire outer surface of the lamination.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a slide caster for furniture comprising a. core having spaced fingers at the periphery thereof, a fibrous lamination disposed over the outer face of the core, and a cap having a resilient peripheral flange, said flange having inwardly disposed protuberances, said protuberances when the cap is forced over the outer face of the caster being received between the fingers.
