Description

H.ROYER. BELTING.
No. 1e4;a4e. Patented Sept 4,1877.
Witness lllve ntor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
HERMAN ROYER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,846, dated September 4, 1877; application filed June 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN RoYER, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Belting; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved belt for transmitting power from one pulley to another; and it consists in the formation of a double belt, one side of which is formed of leather, of that class known as bark or chemically tanned leather, while the other is made of fulled rawhide, or what is known as mechanically-prepared leather.
The characteristic quality of bark-tanned leather is its hardness and ability to resist compression, while the fulled rawhide is noted I for its elasticity and tensile strength. It will be manifest that when belts run over pulleys, and especially if the pulleys are of small diameter and the belt runs slack, the tendency is to compress the inner side of the belt, While the outer side will be correspondingly stretched. This compression and elongation will not be perfectly efie'cted by the use of ordinary leather, and if fulled rawhide is used, the repeated compression and relaxation of the interior surface, as it passes around the pulley and again becomes straightened, has a tendency to cut it after continued use.
In my invention, therefore, I make the inner part of the belt A, which comes in contact with the pulley, of ordinary tanned leather, and the outer part B is made of fulled rawhide or mechanically-prepared leather. These two parts are cemented, riveted, or otherwise secured together in any suitable manner, so as to form a solid belt; or the belt may be made of a single piece, one side of which has 'been chemically tanned, while the other side hand and seal.
