3 Claims.
This invention relates to caps for covering the bolts used in installing plumbing fixtures, and more particularly to improvements in caps for covering the heads of the bolts used in securing a water closet or other plumbing fixture to a floor.
In the installation of plumbing fixtures and especially water closets, it is the customary practice to secure the fixture to the floor by bolts ex tending through openings formed in the base or pedestal of the fixture and to cover the heads of the bolts with unsightly and substantially dome-like caps which project upwardly above the pedestal. These caps not only collect dirt and make it very difiicult to clean around the base of the fixture, but also detract from the appearance of the fixture.
One object of this invention is to provide a bolt cap for water closets and the like type of plumb- 20 ing fixtures, which is substantially fiush with the top of the pedestal or base of the fixture.
Another object is to provide a bolt cap which, when in place on the fixture, does not project above the top of the pedestal or base of a plumbing fixture and which forms a part of the outline or design of the base or pedestal.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bolt cap for a water closet having a stepped base which, when in place, forms a part of one of the steps of the base.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a bolt cap for a water closet or like fixture having a stepped base portion provided with a series of offsets therein which, when in place, forms an offset continuation of one of the steps of the base.
These and other objects which will be readily apparent to those skilled in this particularly art are accomplished by means of this invention, one embodiment of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a water closet having a bolt cap thereon embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on line II-II of Figure 1, and
Fig. 3 is an exploded view in perspective of a portion of a water closet showing the construc- 50"ti0l1 of the base and the bolt cap.
Referring to the drawing in detail, represents a water closet or like type of plumbing fixture having a base or pedestal 11 formed with a series of receding steps 12, the lowermost of which is provided with a plurality of spaced ofisets 13 along each side of the fixture. Portions of the uppermost step on the pedestal are cut away adjacent the offset portions 13 to form recesses 14 having beveled side walls 15 in the pedestal. The recesses 14 communicate with openings 16 oo formed in the pedestal through which bolts 17 are extended for securing the fixture in place on a fioor or like surface. The head of each of the bolts 17 is received in one of the recesses 14 in the pedestal of the fixture.
In order to cover the head of each of the bolts 1''! and to restore the original outline to the uppermost step 12 of the base or pedestal 11, I provide a fiat cap 18 formed of the same materialas the base of the fixture for each of the recesses 14. The rear face of the cap 18 is beveled as at 19 and is adapted to seat against the inner beveled wall of the recess 14 against which it is held by a curved lug 20 depending from the bottom of the cap and which is beveled to seat against the outer beveled wall of the recess 14. The outer or front face of the cap is adapted to extend over a portion of the lowermost step and is shaped to correspond in outline to one of the ofisets 13 so that when the cap is positioned on 801- the pedestal it completes and forms an offset continuation of the uppermost step 12 on the pedestal. The cap 18 is of such thickness that the top thereof is flush with the top of the uppermost step of the base.
The bolt cap 18 may be cemented to the wall of the recess 14 or secured thereto in any other suitable manner.
From the foregoing description it is readily apparent that I have designed a bolt cap for plumbing fixtures which when in place on the fixture lies flush with the top of the pedestal and does not form a dust or dirt collecting projection on the base which interferes with the cleaning of the base.
While I have described one embodiment of my invention it is understood that certain changes and modifications, such as changing the shape of the cap from that illustrated, may be readily made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a water closet or the like, having a, flanged stepped base provided with a series of outwardly flared openings therein, of a cap for covering each of said openings having an inwardly sloping rear wall adapted to seat against the rear wall of the opening, a
curved lug depending from said cap and adapted to seat against the front of the opening, and a lip projecting beyond the front of said opening, the top of said cap being flush with the top of the step of said base and the lip thereof forming a continuation of said step.
2. In combination with a water closet or the like, having a flanged stepped base provided with a series of openings therein, of a cap for each of said openings having one edge thereof shaped to seat against one Wall of said opening, and a lug depending from said cap intermediate of its edges adapted to seat against the opposite wall of said opening for retaining said cap in place, the top of said cap being flush with the stepped portion of said base and the portion thereof extending beyond the lug forming an offset continuation in the step of said base.
3. In combination With a water closet or the like, having a flanged base provided with openings in the uppermost steps thereof of a cap for covering each of said openings, one edge of said cap being shaped to seat against the rear wall of the opening, a lug depending from the cap intermediate of its Width adapted to seat against the front wall of said opening, and a lip projecting beyond and covering the front wall of said opening, the top of said cap being flush with the top of the uppermost step of said base and the lip thereof forming an offset continuation of said step.
