Description

Feb. 13, Q Q MYHRE CALF WEANER Original Filed Dec. 5, 1931 a aM hm, am
Patented Feb. 13, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application December 5, 1931, Serial No. 579,270 Renewed July 26, 1933 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in animal restraining devices, and particularly to calf weaners.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be worn by a calf with comfort, and which will not interfere with its ordinary habits, except that of nursing.
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the calf is given a slight prick w and wherein the cow is protected from any injury or inconvenience, when the calf attempts to nurse.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the calf weaner in position on a calf.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the main portion of the device, removed from the calf.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the movable portion of the device, in an inverted position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the main or stationary part of the device, which is adapted to be attached to the animals head, and 11 the movable part, pivotally connected with the stationary part.
The part 10 is formed from a single piece of metal transversely arcuate to properly fit across the nose of the animal, and is provided with the straps 12, by means of which said part may be secured to the animal. Struck from the upper portion of the plate 10 are the apertured lugs 13, in which is disposed the pivot member 14. Adjacent the other end of the plate 10 are the openings 15 and 16, the latter being elongated.
The movable member 11 is in the form of a transversely arcuate plate of smaller dimensions than the plate 10, and has its upper end rolled into tubular form, as at 1'7, and receives the pivot member 14 therethrough, whereby the member 11 on the nose, upon attempting to nurse the cow,
is pivotally mounted on the member 10. On the pivot between the members 10 and 11 is a. spring 18, which normally holds the member 11 in spaced relation to the member 10. Carried by the lower face of the plate 11 is a single sharpened pin 19, adapted to pass through the single opening 15, of the plate 10, and adjacent said pin is a pair of pointed pins 20, which are adapted to pass through said elongated opening 16, when the plate 11 is swung inwardly toward the plate 10, as when the calf attempts to nurse, and presses the plate 11 against the cow. As the plate 11 is pressed toward the plate 10, the pointed pins 19 and 20 pass through said openings and prick the nose of the calf, thus causing enough pain that the calf will desist. It will be noted that the pins 19 and 20 are so arranged that the cow is not touched by them, thus protecting the cow from pain or inconvenience.
Connected to the sides of the plate 11, and to the plate 10, are the short chains 21, which limit the outward movement of the plate 11, under the influence of the spring 18, so that the pins 19 and 20 are normally held outwardly beyond the plate 10, so as not to interfere with the normal movements of the calf.
What is claimed is:
A calf weaner comprising an arcuate plate for attachment across the nose of a calf and having openings therein, a second plate pivotally mounted on the first plate, pointed pins on the second plate arranged to pass through said openings when said second plate is pressed against a cow, resilient means on the pivot of the second plate for normally urging the pins out of contact with the calf, and flexible members connecting the second plate with the arcuate plate for limiting the movement of the former plate under the influence of said resilient means.
