Patented Feb. 13, 1934 UIED STATES PATENT? ()FFICE The invention relates to buflers of the type used for buffing the breasts of shoe heels. One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a buffer which may be operated at high 5 speed without any danger of the abrasive sheet employed thereon becoming disengaged and without any danger of marring the shoe operated on. Another object is to provide means for facilitating the placing of the abrasive sheets on the buffer body so that not only the sheets may be placed thereon with greater facility, but also with greater accuracy.
A further object is to provide simple means for drawing the abrasive sheets very tightly on the bufier body, and for locking the whole assembly securely on the arbor which rotates the bufier. A still further object is to provide a bufier of simple and inexpensive construction.
These and various other objects and advantages will be readily understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing of a preferred embodiment of the invention in which, however, certain modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims. the buffer consists of a body member formed of two semi-circular, sheet metal halves l0 and 11 which are hinged at 12 and provided with inwardly extending, co-acting flanges 13 and 14. A plurality o1"- pointed pins 15 are riveted in each flange and mesh with holes 16 punched oppositely in the flanges.
A piece of felt, or other suitable resilient material 17, is secured on the outside of the semicircular halves. It is fastened to this by a plurality oi tongues which are sheared from the halves and punched through and clinched in the felt. One of these tongues is shown at 18 in Fig. 1. The felt is secured to the halves while they are open, as shown in Fig. 4. It is made of such width that it will be drawn tightly when the halves are closed. One edge of an abrasive sheet 19 is secured on the pins of one of the flanges and then passed around the felt. The opposite edge is secured on the pins of the other flange;
Referring now to all the views, simultaneously,
thus, when the halves are closed both the felt and the abrasive sheet will fit very tightly on the halves.
The arbor 26 on which the buffer is held is provided with a groove 20 which accommodates the hinge 12, and with a groove 21 in which the flanges 13 and 14 are clamped. It is also slit axially, as shown at 22, to give it a certain amount of spring, and it is provided with a shoulder 23 which forms a stop for the body member. on The felt as well as the abrasive sheet is preferably made longer than the body member so that the ends 24 and 25 may be curved slightly when the heel of the shoe passes over them.
From the foregoing it is evident that the buffer I0 v is of simple and inexpensive construction and that it will hold the abrasive sheet securely. It is also evident that as the felt extends beyond the ends of the body member the danger of marring the heel is greatly reduced.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim as new and wish to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a buffer of the class described; a pair of hinged, semi-circular, sheet metal halves comprising a body member mountable on an arbor having a longitudinal groove; inwardly-extending, co-acting flanges for clamping the edges of an abrasive sheet; a piece of resilient material secured on the outside of the body member; an abrasive sheet encircling the resilient material and having its edges held between said flanges; and the flanges of the body member insertable in said groove, so as to cause them to securely clamp the edges of the abrasive sheet and to cause the whole buffer to rotate with the arbor when that is rotated.
2. In a buffer of the class described; a pair of hinged, semi-circular sheet metal halves comprising a body member mountable on an arbor having a longitudinal groove; inwardly extending, co-acting flanges for clamping the edges of an abrasive sheet; a plurality of pins secured on each of said flanges; a piece of resilient material secured on the outside of the body member; an abrasive sheet encircling the resilient material and its edges mounted on said pins and held between said flanges; and the flanges of the body member insertable in said groove so as to cause them to securely clamp the edges of the abrasive sheet and to cause the whole buffer to rotate with the arbor when that is rotated.
3. In a bufier of the class described, a pair 01. hinged, semi-circular sheet metal halves, comprising a body member mountable on an arbor 110 having a longitudinal groove; inwardly extending, co-acting flanges for clamping the edges of an abrasive sheet; a piece of resilient material secured on the outside of the body member; an abrasive sheet encircling the resilient material and its edges held between said flanges; the resilient material and the abrasive sheet being longer than the body member; and the flanges of the body member insertable in said groove so as to cause them to securely clamp the edges of the abrasive sheet and to cause the whole buffer to rotate with the arbor when that is rotated.
4. In a buffer of the class described; a pair of hinged, semi-circular sheet metal halves com.
prising a body member mountable on an arbor having a longitudinal groove; inwardly extending, co-acting flanges for clamping the edges of an abrasive sheet; a piece of resilient material secured on the outside of the body member; an
abrasive sheet encircling the resilient material and its edges held between said flanges; the resilient material being secured to the body memher while it is open so that both this material and the abrasive sheet will be drawn tightly on the body member when it is closed; and the flanges of the body member insertable in said groove so as to cause them to securely clamp the edges of the abrasive sheet and to cause the whole buffer to rotate with the arbor when that is rotated.
5. In combination; a buffer of the class described comprising a body member formed of two hinged halves having inwardly extending and coacting flanges; a piece of resilient material secured on the outside or" said body member; an abrasive sheet encircling said resilient material and held between said flanges; an arbor on which the body member is mounted; and a longitudinal groove formed in said arbor in which the flanges are engaged so as to cause them to securely clamp the edges of the abrasive sheet and to cause the whole buffer to rotate with the arbor when that is rotated.
