JAMES RODGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX FOR RECEIVING MONEY IN CARS, STAGES, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RoDGnRs, of the city, county, and State of. New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Receiving Money in Stages, Cars, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operat-ion of the same, refer-A ence being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is a vertical section centrally of t-he said money box, and Fig. 2, is an inverted plan of said box with the bottom removed.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
A box for receiving passengers fares in stages &c., has been invented and patented by I. B. Slawson July 28th, 1857, in which a hopper or receptacle of glass has been used with a slide at the bottom, so that after the money has been placed in said hopper and the driver sees it to be correct, the slide is withdrawn and the money allowed to drop into a box. In this instance the glass sides forming the hopper are stationary, and if the money becomes clogged at the mouth, in consequence of several pieces lying togethera there is no opportunity for the driver readily to rectify the evil.
My invention therefore does not consist in the use of a glass sided hopper and draw, but my invention relates to the construction of a glass sided hopper', with one side movable, so as to act to close the orifice to the money box, and also to relieve any money that might be ammed between said glasses, by the one side moving away from the same and permitting the money to fall into the draw. In connection with this glass sided hopper or receptacle, I make use of a cover applied in such a manner as to strike a bell when the passenger raises said coved to place his 'fare in said hopper, thereby attracting the drivers attention, and in connection with the same bell I apply a slide and latch that can be operated by the driver to call the attention of passengers. to the payment of their fares.
In the drawing a, a, is a box of any suitable size or shape, which on stages should be located at the left side of the driver, and pass into the front partof the lightor cupola on the stage top; b, is a draw for receiving the money which should be provided 19,446, dated February 23, 1858.
with a suitable lock so that it can only be opened by the proper person; and the driver should be provided with a separate box out of which to make change for passengers who may not have the correct amount. On the box is an inclined glass c, which is a fixture, and el, is another glass to protect the parts from any rain; e, is a cover hinged as at 1, 1, and hanging down against the upper edge of the glass c,- f is another glass set in grooves in the sides of the box, a, and sustained by a frame 2, at its lower edge; 3, is a bar connected to said frame 2, and passing out with an eye or handle 4; 5, 5, are openings that tend to draw the lower edges of the glass f toward the lower edge of the glass o.
The operation of this part is as follows: lVhen the passengers insert their fare between the glasses c, and f, the same is retained until the driver looking through the glasses sees that the amount is correct and on pulling the eye 4, draws the glass f, back, allowing the money to fall into the draw, b.
On the cover e, is an arm 6, with a connecting rod to a slide 7, and 8, is a spring to draw said slide back; g, is a bell secured on the inside of the box; lz., is the hammer of said bell, on the pin z', propelled by the spring la, and arrested in its movements by the inside of the box; L, is the hammer of acted on by a spring dog 10, so that as the cover e, is raised for the insertion of money into the hopper, the bell is struck to attract the drivers attention.
If passengers do not pay their fare at the proper time, the driver calls their attention by ringing the bell g, by a slide m, and dog 11, acting on an arm 12, from the hammer L, moved by the handle n.
By my improved money box, the drivers attention is called when money is placed in the receptacle; the driver and passengers can see that the amount is correct; the driver can then drop said money into the draw; and when the driver is ready to collect the fare he has the means under his command of calling attention by the bell.
My apparatus is cheap, durable, efiicient, not liable to become clogged, and is an ef fectual check upon drivers, conductors or others committing frauds upon the proprietors.
I do not claim a glass receptacle to receive money to be deposited in a draw beneath, but
3. I also claim, in combination with said bell connected to the cover of the money receptacle, the slide m and dog ll7 to call attention of passengers to the payment of their fares as specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this thirtieth day of January JAMES RODGERS. Witnesses:
LEMUEL W. SERRELL, THOMAS G. HAROLD.
