Be it lrnown that l, CHARLES H. Weens, a citizen ci the United States, a resident of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State ol lllinois, have invented new and useful hnpiovements in Fare Boxes, ofv which the 'following is a specilication.
This invention has reference to tare-boxes, and relates particularly to that type of tare-box in which is deposited the coin, ticket or token by a passenger on entering a street car.
The invention has .for its principal object lo improve that type of fare-box which is provided with a removable till having a closure normally retained in an open position when in the tare-box, and which is caused to assume a closed and locked position when removed trom the tare-bon, by providing` the closure with a lock which cannot be tampered with, and suspending the till on rails which have means complementary to means on the till and the closure, whereby the till is slidably supported in dii'lerent horizontal planes.
The invention has for a further object to slidably support the till in a fare-box on rails having means complementary to means on the till and its closure, whereby the till is slidable in diiierent horizontal planes when placing and removing the same, and providing for the opening oi' the closure for thetill when placing the same in the tarebox, and 'for automatically closing the closure during the withdrawal of the till and tor locking such closure at or about the nion'ient the till changes from one horizontal position to another.

The fare-box comprises in the main, a container supporting a depository for the coins, tickets or tokens and separated by a dumping-plate; till or receiving receptacle adapted to be removably housed in the container' and having a lid or slide-cover which, when the till is placed in the fare-box is opened and when the till is removed from the tare-bor; the slide-cover is closed, and to other and minor details to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

nlhe casting 28 of the till is provided with a plurality of lugs 45, 46 and 47 which project from the opposite sides of the said casting. Said lugs lie in the same horizontal plane and suitably spaced from each other, but preferably in a horizontal plane below the slots 34, and the lugs 37 on the slide 35.
When assembling the fare-box, the rails or castings 39 are secured in place with the open ends of the grooves u, and c in said slides adjacent the opening in the container, closed by the door 2, see Figure 2. Assuming that the door is open and it is` desired to insert the till, the lugs 45 are inserted into and caused to be moved rearwardly in opposite grooves b of the rails or astings, and the lugs 37 are inserted into and caused to be movedrearwardly in the opposite grooves a of the rails or castings, and when said lugs 37 reach the pawls 39 they ride beneath the same, raising said pawls against the tensions of the springs which act to force said pawls down in front of the lugs 37 as soon as they have passed thereunder, see Figure 6. The rearward movement of the till is then continued until the lugs 45 reach the eXtreme inner ends of the grooves l), while at the same time the lugs 46 and 47 have entered and become positioned in the grooves b, see Figure 4. During this last mentioned rearward movement of the till, the lugs 37 are held, as shown in Figure 4 causing the slide 35 to be held in position, with the till moving thereunder until thev opening 30, closed by the till, is exposed to the dumping plate 2l to permit coins, tickets or tokens deposited to be passed down through the opening into the till. The foregoing movements have been described as taking place, assuming that the locking means has been released so as to permit the till to be moved relatively to the slide 35, after the lugs 37 and 45 have reached the passage- 'way and the till raised to change the horizontal position of the lugs 45, 46 and 47, as well as the lugs 37.
Assuming now that the till is in receiving position in the container, see Figures 2, 4 and 5 and it is desired to remove the till from the container and during such movement close the slide over the opening 30 and lock it in such closed position. The operator will unlock the door 2 at 4 and grasp and oscillate the hand hold lifting the Enger 25 into engagement with the linger 3 and release the locking member 7, permitting the door 2 to be swung into open position. The door 2 being opened, the operator will then grasp the hand hold 27 on the till and draw the latter outwardly the lugs 4o, 46 and 47 moving forwardly in the grooves .5, until the lugs 4G have cleared the ends of the rails or castings 39, see Figures 6 and 7 and the lugs are brought into coincidence vvith the passageway d, see Figures 6 and 7, when the till will drop positioning the lugs in the grooves c and the lugs 46 and 47 in line therewith, see lfignre 7. During the movement of withdrawing` the till with the lugs 45, 46 and 47 moving forwardly in the groove the lugs 37 on the slide are held by the pawls 38 against forward movement, resulting in the till moving forwardly under the slide or in other words, moving relatively thereto, and when the lugs reach the passageway d the slide is closed and the lugs 37 and 45 are in superimposed position, Figures t5 an 7. ,ln this position the loclrino means t3 is locked against the rear face or the stop 3l on the plate or closure 29. The till having been lowered, as described, a. further withdrawal movement will cause the lugs 37 to pass out through the grooves l) in the rails orvcastings 39, and the lugs 45 to pass out through the grooves c in said rails or castings, as it is believed will be understood. rl`he withdrawal movement of the till being graphically illustrated in Figures 7 and 9.

lrom the within disclosure it will be observed that I have provided a fare-box including a till, y the supporting means for which and the closure are simple, yet effec-- tive. Being simple in construction and with nothing to get out of order, and so constructed as to stand rough treatment without disturbing the operating parts. l."Vhile l have elected a preferred embodiment of the invention l am fully aware that modifications may be made within the range of skilled mechanics and therefore, do not wish to be confined to the details disclosed, except as stated in the appended claims.

In a fare-box, in combination, a eontainer, a till, a slidable closure for said till, grooved supporting rails secured to opposite WallsY of the Container, means on the till and its closure adapted to have a slidable relation with said grooved rails, and means on said rail-s to retard the movement of said Closure as the till is Withdrawn and until the closure assumes a looked position.

In a fare-box, in cornbination7 a oontainer, a till, a slidable Clowre for said till, supportingu rails secured to opposite walls of the container and provided Wit-h oorresponding superimposed communicating grooves opening` out of one end oi said rails, means on Ithe till and its closure adapted to have a slidable relation with certain of saidy grooves Wl en said till is inserted .into-seid Container and other oit said grooves when said till is removed from said Container, and means on sa-id rails to retard thev movement of said Closure as the till is Withdrawn and. until the closure assumes a looked position.
3. Ina 'fare-box, in combination., a container, a till. a movable eiosure for said till, guiding and supporting means for the till in the container, means on the till andv its closure adapted to have a roar-ting relation. With said guiding` and supp(wtiing` means,
the latter being arranged for the insertionV and removal of the till in different horizontal planes, and means to hold the lclosure relativeto the till as the latter is Withdrawn and until the olosure asumes a looked position.

In a fare-box, in combination, a oontainer, a till provided with a pair of opposiftely disposed slots, a slidable closure for said till, lugs on said Closure operating in and through said siots, other lugs arojeeting from opposite sides oi' said till, supporting means for the till provided with grooves, Certain of which are adapted to receive the. lugs on the till and closure WhenV the till is inserted into thecontainer and others of which are adapted to receive said lugs when the till is withdrawn, and means to hold the elosure relative to the till as the latter is Withdrawn and until the Closure assumes a looked position.

In a fare-box, in combination, a oontainer, a till., a slidablefelosure for said till, lugs on-the Closure, lugs on the till, guiding and supportingl rails secured within the oontainer and provided with a plurality ol' superimposed grooves intercepted by a transverse passageway, the lugs on the till and the closure adapted to travel certain grooves in said rails When the till is inserted and travel certain other grooves and said passageway when the till is Withdrawn, and pivoted paWls under and behind which said lugs on the closure move as the till is insert.- ed .for retardinlb)l the Closure during the Withdrawal oi'A the till and until the closure assumes a locked position.

In a fare-box, in combination, a container, rails secured to opposite inside walls or" said container, each of said rails provided with a plurality of superimposed grooves opening out oi' one end of said rails und a passageway intereepting the middle groove and communicating with the upper and lower grooves, yieldingly held pawls lying Within the upper grooves of each rail and at the .inner ends thereof, a till, a slidable elosure therefor, lugs on saidI closure and n plurality of lugs on said till, the lugs on the closure movable in the upper grooves and the lugs on the till mo 7able in the middle grooves when the till is inserted into the oontainer, and the lugs on the closure. movable in the middle grooves and the lugs on the till movable in the lower grooves when the till is Withdrawn, said pawl's acting to retard the closure during` the withd"z1\val of the till and until the closure assumes aI lorked position.

In a fare-box, iny combination, a container, adoor hinged to saideontainer, locking means for said door loeatedwholly within said container, al dumping; plate within the container, means located withoutthe Container for aetuatingsaid dumpingplat/o, means associated with said dumping plate for releasing said lor-.king means, a till means in the Container with which the till has a slidable relation, a slidable closure for said till, and means to automatically close and lool; said Closure as the till is withdrawn from said container.
