3 Claims. (Cl. 20G-41) This invention relates to a new and novel cigarette extinguisher appliance, which because of certain features thereof which will be fully described below has advantages in operation and features of convenience not heretofore found in a device of this character.
It is an object of this invention to provide an inexpensive, though eicient and rugged device of this character which involves few and simple parts which will not readily get out of order, and which presents opportunity for embellish- .Inent and decoration, and which is simple and pleasant to operate.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a device of the character described which because of its construction, is susceptible to be used either top side up or bottom side up, with equal efficiency.
These and other objects of the invention, its nature, and its composition and arrangement and combination of parts will be readily understood by any one acquainted with the art which this invention relates upon consulting the following descriptions of the drawings, in which:-

Figure 4 is a horizontal transverse sectional view through Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the catch mechanism at the right hand end of the device.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Figure 5 showing certain details of the spring latch.
Figure '7 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the device at an intermediate point thereof.
Figure 8 is an end View of the device taken from the right of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates the device which consists of the sectional casing formed of the mutually hinged sections 6 and 7 which are in the form of deep, narrow elongated trays adapted to telescope. The casing section 6 is adapted to telescope upon the casing section '7 as particularly Well indicated in Figure '7, and this position is brought about through the swinging of the casing sections upon the pin 8 which is journaled through the left hand ends of the casing sections 6 and '7 as shown. The left-hand ends of the casing sections are formed rounded as indicated at 9 and 10 to form a sliding, hinged joint. It will be observed that the rounded portion 10 of the casing section '7 is upwardly oiiset a distance equal approximately to the thickness of the rounded portion 9 of the section 6.so as 60 to provide the limit top shoulder 11 for the free end of the portion 9 of the section 6 to engage, so as to limit the divergent swing of the casing sections 6 and '7. A spring arm 12 has. its tethered end turned about the hinge pin 8 as 65 seen particularly well in Figure V4, and the free end of the spring arm 12 rests upon the licor of the section '7, whereby to urge the casing sections away from each other in hinged swinging movement whenever the catch mechanism is opl erated to release them. Mounted within each casing section is an elongated sheet metal body having an approximately semi-circular cross section, which is arranged to register with its companion and form a tube to accommodate a vvcig- 75 arette therebetween. The tube section attached to the casing section 6 is indicated by the numeral 13 and the tube section attached to the casing section '7 is indicated by the numeral 14. It will be observed that the edges of the tube sections 1,180 13, 14 come into registry and engage each other when the casing sections 6 and '7 are swung together and the latch engaged. In this position the casing section 6 is telescoped upon the casing section '7 as shown in Figure '7. At the left 85 hand end of the tube sections 13, 14 there are provided crimps 17, 18 which produce portions of decreased diameter for choking and severing the lighted end of a cigarette. Outwardly of the crimps are tapered portions 15, 16 which, when'p90 registered, form a conical chamber for compressing the lighted end of a cigarette and holding the ashes which may become severed from the body of the cigarette.
The right hand ends of the tube sections 13,I 14 stop short of the companion end of the casing sections 6, '7, which as indicated at 19, come together in abutting relationship, and within the space between the ends of the casing sections and the ends of the tube sections 13, 14, the4 v100 latch mechanism is disposed. y
The latch mechanism consists of the hook 20 depending from the underside of the right hand end portion of the casing section A6, and having a transversely disposed bill arranged to pass' 105 through a transverse slot 2l in a horizontal transversely movable plate 22, and engage under the plate which is provided exteriorly of the casing with an operating knob 23. The plate 22 is slidably supported in holes in the arms of a U-shaped '110 bracket 2'7 whose bight is secured to the bottom of the casing section '7. Mounted on the inside surface of a side wall of the casing section 7 is a spring arm 24 provided with a slottedend as 5 indicated at 25 and spaced from the side Wall to receive the plate 22 without contact therewith. On the plate 22 between the slotted end of the spring 24 and the said side wall is a pair of pins 26. With this arrangement, sufcient pressure upon the operating knob 234 inwardly Will move the plate 22 inwardly againstthe ltension of the spring arm 24, so that the slot 21 will be moved sufficient to permit disengagement of the hook 20 from the plate 22, and swinging apart of the casing sections 6, 7 under the action of the spring 12.4 Whenfpressure: on:
the knob 23 is released the spring arm 24 returns the plate 22 to initial position. A pin 28 V'with a head 29 similar to the head 23 is placed on the outside of the opposite side wall of the casing section 7 in opposition to the operating knob 23 so as to balance the feel? and appearance of the device,` and to beengaged byth'elower edger of the-casing section 6 so as to limit the telescoping ofithe casing sectionsrwh'en they are in latched position. The side-walls of theuppercasing section 6 are cut away as-indicated at 30 and 31 to-'properly accommodate the operating knob 23 andthe headed pin 28, 29. The hook is provided readily removable incase of wear by attaching itto `the top of the casing section 6 by means ofl a plate-32 into which engages a screw 33 passing through' the top -of the casing section 6;

It 'is' `to be denitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of this invention to the particular modification set out herein to illustrate the principles thereof, and any change or changes may be made in material, and in structure and arrangement of parts consistent with the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing comprising a pairof complemental sections, a pin traversing the sides at one end of the sections in a manner to pivot the sections for swinging into telescoping relation, a tube section in each casing section and extending substantially the length thereof, said tube sections being arranged to register when the casing sections areswung together, lighted-end quenching means at the end of the tube sections adjacent the pivoted end of the casing sections.

A device of the character described comprising acasing comprising a lpair oftelescoping sections, a pin passing ltransversely through the sections near one end :thereof vfor swingably connectingv the sections, cooperating cigarette holding means mounted in'` each sectionffcooper- 1g@ ating lighted end extinguishingmeans .carried bythe-end o the holding means near theswingablyV connected ends of the sections.

A device of the character describedrcomprising a casing comprising a pair. of. elongated g5 telescoping sections each comprising a web, side Walls, and end Walls, a'pivot passing. through'the side walls of the sections near,` one end thereof so as'tov. connect the'sections swingably, a cooperating half-.tube mounted within each sectionlg forming a cigarette holder when the sections are closed, aacooperating `extinguisher member on the end of each half-tube near the swingably connected end of the sections.
