IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-SADDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,460, dated August 21, 1877 application filed April 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, LEANDER O. PEPPER and BENJAMINE GEPHART, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a harnesssaddle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved harness-saddle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing on one side a stuffed pad and on the other side a pad of sheet metal. Fig.3 is a perspective view of the end of the sheet-metal pad.

A represents an ordinary stuifed pad for harness-saddles, and B is the saddle-leather,

which lies over and is secured to the nut or burr piece 0. This piece 0 is formed with a groove, 01., and metallic loops b b, to receive the end of the skirt. 7

The skirt and layer of the saddle are, as usual, stitched together, but are parted at the upper end, so that the skirt will pass into the groove on in the lower end of the not or burr piece 0, and the end of the layer passes over the housing D and into the flange-recess in the under part of the yoke E, and both the skirt and layer are fastened by means of the pad-screw Gin such a manner as to admit of the same being detached at pleasure by simply taking out the pad-screw G, -or readjusted by inverse means.

H H are ordinary terrets, which, in connection with the pad-screws G G, fasten the yoke E, housing D, and pad A substantially together, and the several parts are detached by unscrewing said terrets and pad-screws.

I is an ordinary hook or check-strap holder, fastened to the yoke E by means of a shank and tap on the lower end.

d d are the nuts, placed in sockets on the under piece of the nut-piece 0, and in which the terrets and pad-screws fasten.

The yoke E is made of sheet metal, and is provided with a flange, 6, along its edges, projecting downward, with openings at the ends to receive the ends of the layer. The yoke is also provided on the under side with transverse ribs h, having enlarged centers through which the terrets pass. The crupperJ is also attached to the center of said yoke.

The flanges e on the edges of the yoke E form recesses at the ends, on the under side, for the reception of the layers or bearers, and, together with the ribs h, they serve to strengthen the yoke, and thereby requiring less weight of metal to secure proper strength.

The metallic loops 1) on the nut-piece (J serve to strengthen said nut-piece or stifi'en it, preventing it from cupping, and at the same time leave the end of the pad flexible.

Instead of the stuffed pad A, a sheet-metal pad, L, may be used, in which case the nutpiece 0 is'also made of sheet metal and provided with the groove 0 and loops b, and has suitable sockets to receive the nuts (1, as shown.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the housing D, the narrow metallic yoke E, provided with down ward-projecting flanges e, which rest on the housing, and with cross-ribs h, forming enlargements, through which the screws of the terrets pass, as set forth.

2. The nut-pieceU, provided with the groove a. and loops b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination, with the nut-piece 0, having grooves a and loops b, the housing D, and yoke E, of the pad-screws G, for fastening both the skirts and layers in position, In testimony that we claim the foregoing substantially as herein set forth. we have hereunto set our hands this 2d day 4.
