Description

Jan. 16, 1934. J, MURRAY 1,943,620
LAND WHEEL Filed May 31, 1933 INVENTOR AT'fO MIEYS Patented Jan. 16, 1934 UiTED STATES ATENT QFFICE LAND WHEEL James Daniel Murray, Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia 1 Claim.
This invention relates to the class of wheels usually known as land wheels which being rotated by traversing over land impart rotary motion to mechanism with which they are asso- 5 ciated, generally through the medium of suitable gearing as spur gearing.
Land wheels as usually constructed have a tendency to slip during rotation particularly when the tread surface has become worn, and
also are relatively heavy to drive.
Referring to the drawing,
Fig. l is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the modified form thereof, and.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of another modification.
My invention consists in the application to such wheels of a tread surface which has no tendency to slip, which does not seriously affect the surface of comparatively soft land, and which makes the wheels more easy to drive than those hitherto employed.
The invention broadly described is comprised of a series of semi-cylindrical cogs projecting radially from the tread of the wheel the space between them being in the form of a curve struck from outside the wheel and preferably of a radius equal to the radius of the wheel.
By this form of construction the wheel has what may be termed a rolling ofiset and a perfect grip of the land is obtained.
The invention may be applied in the form of an independent band or as a ring of cast or pressed metal, or may be integral with the rim 0 of the wheel.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows in side elevation, the invention applied in the following manner:-
In Fig. l in the form of a band.
In Fig. 2 as a ring of cast or pressed metal, and in Fig. 3 as cast integral with the wheel.
The same numerals of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
In Fig. 1 a band of hoop steel has the semicylindrical cogs l which are connected by the curved sections 2 having a length greater than the diameter of the semi-cylindrical cogs.
The curvature of the connecting sections being opposed to the curvature of the circumference of the wheel 3.
The band is shown secured to the wheel by rivets 4.
In Fig. 2 the ring 5 fits closely upon the circumference of the wheel to which it may be applied by shrinking or other usual means.
In Fig. 3 the invention is applied by castin integral with the wheel.
I claim:---
As a new article of manufacture, a land wheel having a rim portion formed with a series of semi-cylindrical cogs projecting from its circumference, said cogs being connected by sections having a curvature struck from a point outside the circumference of the wheel on a radius equal to that of the wheel, said sections having a length greater than the diameter of the semi-cylindrical cogs.
