(c1. 13s- 2) This invention relates to machines designed for the issue vof tickets sold as tokens giving admission to places of amusement and elsewhere, and in payment of fares for transport and for other purposes, and has for its object the provision of an improved form of machine, adapted not only to issue tickets but to return to the operator cash tendered in excess of the value of the ticket or tickets issued.
The main feature of the invention consists in the combination with coin holding magazines each fitted with a slide for ejecting coins singly therefrom, of a slide selector; selective manually operable means covering a range of values of money to be tendered, geared with said slide selector, for moving the latter in one direction; selective manually operable ticket issuing means geared with said slide selector for imparting return movement to the latter; and means for operating selected slides to eject coins from the latters magazines.
Each magazine slide carries a lever with a catch thereon, and is normally maintained in contact with a track on the selector, while each track contains a single or a plurality of recesses, according to the coin value of the magazine, the slide of which it controls, and so long as a slide lever is entered in a recess in its related track, the slide is disconnected from the slide operating means and is inoperative, but immediately an unrecessed part of a track is presentedto its coacting slide lever, the latter is brought to a'position in which it will provide a connection between its slide and the slide operating means, so that upon the latter being actuated, said slide will eject a coin from the magazine it controls.
The above and other features comprised in the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form which the machine may take, although the latter is not necessarily restricted to the construction illustrated.

In the form of machine illustrated, there is provided in a frame 1 a plurality of vertically arranged cylindrical magazines 2 placed side by side, and adapted to contain coins of selected denominations, the internal cross sectional area of each magazine 2 being such that it will accommodate neatly on the at, only the coins it is intended to receive and hold.
Coins are released from each magazine 2 edge- Ways and one at a time from the bottom of the latter, by the operation of slides 3, operating horizontally one across the bottom of each magazine 2, each slide 3 containing an opening 3a (Figs. 8 and 9) equalling in area the interior cross sectional area of the magazine 2 below which it Works, so that When registered with the bottom thereof it receives the lowermost coin from the magazine, which coin is however prevented from passing below the slide 3 by a base plate 4 on which the former works. Each slide 3 has thereon upstanding lugs 5 (Figs. 5 and 7) between which is pivotedy a lever 6, the forward end of which has an upward projection, and a dovvnturned catch 6a, while the other or rear'end of said lever 6 is connected by a spring 7 in tension with the frame 1, to keep the forward end of the lever 6 raisedv and in contact with the slide selector, which in this form of the invention, consists of horizontally mounted drum 8 disposed behind and parallel 105 with the row of magazines 2.
The slide selector drum 8 has thereon tracks 9 one in respect of each magazine 2 and its slide 3, and said tracks can consist of ribs containing recesses 9a at intervals, so that in selected posi- 110 tions during the rotation of the drum 8 unrecessed portions of the ribs 9 engage the forward ends of some of the levers 6 carried by the slides 3, and depress said forward ends, in order that the catches 6a thereon will be engaged by upwardly extending fingers 10 on a rocking bar 11 fitted with a depressible hand operated lever 12 projecting from the front of the machine, and capable of being operated against the action of av spring 12a to move the ngers 10, so that the latter will draw forward the depressed and en-V gaged lever catches 6a and so cause the slides 3 carrying the latter to move against the actionv of springs 13, and discharge the lowermost coins from the magazines affected, the discharged coins dropping into the chute 14 and gravitating to a common outlet provided in the front of the machine.
Referring to Fig. 14 of the drawings, wherein is set out in diagrammatic form on the fiat, the tracks 9 of the slide selector drum8, the portions 9a of said tracks are in the form of recesses, while the remaining portions of said tracks are either unrecessed, or raised portions.
The levers 6 mounted on the slides 3 are arranged with their forward ends carrying the catches 6a, in a straight line located directly below the horizontal axis of the selector drum 8, so that any given line extending along the periphery of the drum 8 parallel with the axis thereof can be brought directly over the line of forward ends of the levers 6, simply by rotating the drum 8.
The parallel lines 15 appearing in Fig. 14 represent imaginary lines spaced around and extending along the periphery of the drum 8, and each of said lines 15 can, when required, be brought directly over the line of forward ends of the levers 6.
If the lines 15 in Fig. 14 are examined, it will be noticed that each line passes through a combination of unrecessed or raised portions of tracks 9, and recessed portions 9a of tracks, line 15b for instance, passing through a raised or unrecessed portion in each track except one of the latter, in which case said line passes through a recess 9a, so that if said line 15b was brought over the line of forward ends of the levers 6, all of the forward ends of the: latter except one would be depressed by unrecessed or raised portions of tracks, and the catches 6a; of the depressed levers 6 would each be placed in position for engagement by its co-acting linger 10 on the bar 11, while the forward end of the lever 6 not depressed, would pass upwards into the recess 9a in said line 15b, leaving its catch 6a clear of its co-acting finger 10, and rendering its slide inoperative. If the lever 12 be operated following setting of the drum 8 as just explained, each slide 3 having thereon a lever 6 with a depressed catch 6a will be operated and discharge a 'coin from its respective magazine 2.
The slide selector drum 8 is provided with a neutral position, wherein all of the slides 3 are rendered inoperative, or the lever 12 can be operated without drawing forward any of the slides, so that no coins can be ejected from the magazines 2. The drum 8 is in its neutralposition when the stop 37 on its periphery is engaged by the stop pawl 37a (Figs. 2 and 6), and in this position the line 15e (Fig. 14) represented as the zero line, will be directly over the line of the forward ends of the levers 6, and as said line 15c passes only through recessed portions 9a ofl the tracks 9, it follows that the forward ends of all of the levers6 will be maintained in raisedpositions, in which all of the catches 6a will be clear of their co-acting fingers 10 on the rocking bar 11, consequently movement of the latter by the lever 12 will not operate any of the slides 3.
The setting of the selector drum to bring the required combination of unrecessed or raised portions of tracks 9 and recessed portions 9a thereof, over the line of forward ends of the levers 6, is brought about by the operation, first of selective means covering a range of values of money tendered, and secondly by the operation of selective ticket issuing means, both used in conjunction with a toothed rack on the slide selector 8, the rack in this form of machine where the selector is given rotary movement, consisting of a toothed wheel 16 secured to an end of the drum 8, and having a roller pawl 17 maintained in engagement therewith by means of a spring 17a.
A form of selective means covering a range ofvalues of money tendered comprises a disc 18 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) keyed on a shaft 19 geared through bevel gears 19a with the selector drum 8, so that when said disc 18 is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow, it turns the drum 8 towards the front of the machine. This indicator disc 18 bears on its face around the edge the pin 20a depressed to project from the back of the disc 18, engages a stop 21 attached to the frame 1, and prevents further turning movement of the disc 18. Y
The result of setting the indicator disc 18 as described is to turn the selector drum 8 from its stop or neutral position, forward a predetermined distance in relation to the vamount of money received,'each amount of money within the range covered by the amounts marked on the disc 18,
being related to a particular predetermined forward turning movement of the drum 8.
One form of selective ticket issuing means comprises a series of hand levers 22 leach of which` has denoted thereon the value of a ticket or the like, capable of being issued by the machine, the pivotal axes of said levers 22 being common, which effect is obtained by keying said levers 22 each on one of a series of concentrically arranged shafts 23, (Fig. 10), the innermost one of which is the longest and the outermost of which is the shortest, the intermediate shafts being stepped in length between the longest and the shortest.
Each lever shaft 23 is fitted at its outer end with a'freev wheeldevice 24, adapted to feed tickets from a roll thereof comprising tickets of a value corresponding to that denoted on the lever 22 on said shaft 23, the free wheel device 24 permitting upward or return movement of the ticket lever under the action of a .spring 22a,
without imparting turning movement to the feeding device 24, while the latter is, upon the lever 22 being depressed, given turning movement, to feed a ticket toa delivery slot 25a common to and extending across all of the ticket feeding devices 24 which are mounted side by side.
The ticket levers 22 just referred to are staggered and arrangedy in rows to economize space and facilitate selection in operation, and each when depressed to cause the issue of a ticket,.im partsbackward turning movement to the lselector drum 8 with the tracks 9 thereon, as will now be described.
Following the forward setting of theselector drum 8 by the operation of the disc 18, one or more of the ticket levers 22 is or are depressed to bring about the issue of one or more tickets, the total value of which does not exceed the amount of money received or placed in the machine.
The rst portionof the movement in depressing a ticket lever 22, brings the latter into contact with a bar 25 on the outer end of a lever26 mounted on the shafts 23, said lever 26 having at its other end a toothed segment 26a which meshes with a partly toothed wheel 27 mounted on the drum spindle 8a at the end of the drum 8, removed from the circular rack 16 and the bevel gear 19a, said partly toothed wheel 27 being located adjacent a brake disc 28 loosely mounted on the drum spindle 8a, and in frictional contact with an adjustable friction brake 29 to prevent free turning movement and provided to guard against over-running of the selector drum 8. The partly toothed wheel 27 has pivoted thereto a pawl 30 having a pin 31 entered in an inclined slot 28a in the disc 28, said pawl 30 also having a tooth 30a adapted to engage in a .further toothed rack 32 on the selector drum 8, a spring 33 acting on said pawl to normally maintain same in a position with its tooth 30a clear of the rack 32 on the drum 8. When the partly toothed wheel 27 is turned by the toothed segment 26a, pawl 30 moves with it and the pin 31 travels down the inclined slot 28a in disc 28, owing to the latter resisting the turning movement, whereby tooth 30a becomes engaged in rack 32 and the rack 32, wheel 27 and disc 28 become locked together and turn as a unit.
Each free wheel device 24 for issuing tickets from a roll, through the common slot 25a, consists of an outer drum 34 having spikes 34a on its periphery, (Fig. 15), and an inner drum 35 rotatable within the outer drum, the inner drum 35 being keyed on the shaft 23 which also has keyed thereon a ticket lever 22 bearing the denomination of the value of the tickets comprisedin the roll thereof being dealt with. The inner drum 35 has a toothed periphery with which a spring pressed pawl 36 carried by the outer drum 34 is maintained in engagement, so that rotation of the drum 35 in the direction indicated due to depression of the requisite ticket lever 22, causes the outer spiked drum 34 to be also turned in the same direction, and owing to the fact that the strip of tickets from the roll thereof is forced into close contact with the periphery of the drum 34 by a guide 38, the spikes 34a grip the ticket strip and feed same through the slot 25a a distance equal to the length of a ticket upon the ticket lever 22 being returned to its normal position under the action of its return spring 22a, the toothed periphery of the inner drum 35 merely slips past the pawl 36 to re-set the device for the next ticket issuing operation thereof. The toothed rack 16 on the slide selector 8, and the roller pawl 17 acting in conjunction therewith, are provided for the purpose of checking movement of the selector, and also to assist in quick and accurate setting thereof in relation to the line of forward ends of the levers 6, each recess in the rack 16 coinciding with a line l5, (Fig. 14), and the pawl 17 being fitted so that, when engaged in a recess in the rackl, one of the lines 15 is directly over the line of the .forward ends of the levers 6.
Assuming the selector drum .8 to be in its 'neutral positionand the magazines 2 charged with coins, the operation of the machine, briefly, is as fo1lows:
A sum of money within the range of amounts appearing on the .indicator disc 18, is inserted in the slot 39 and passed to the magazines 2, by the chute-.40 and distributor 4l.
.The operatorselects a finger piece 20 marked with the v'amount agreeing with the amount of money inserted in the machine,.and placinghis nger in the selected finger piece, depresses the latter, to cause its pin 20a to project from the back of the discf18, at the same time imparting turning movement to said disc inthe direction indicated by the arrow, until the 4pin 20a engages the stop 21, which prevents further turning movement of the disc. This'operation results in the selector drum' 8 being given forward turning movement, through the bevel gearing 19a, the special distance related to the amount of money inserted in said slot, and in exchange for which a ticket or tickets and change, are to be given. The next operation is to depress one or more of the ticket levers 22, according tothe number and valueof tickets required, and as each lever 22 is depressed it causes a ticket to be projected through the ticket slot 25a,.from the roll the feeding device 24 of which, is actuated from the depressed lever 22,
the `downward movement of the latter at the Sametime imparting backward turning movement to the 'selector drum 8, through contact with the bar 25 which operates the toothed segment 26a and the partly toothed wheel 27, the latter becoming locked to the drum 8 by means of the pawl 30 with the tooth 30a on its underside, so that -the drum 8, the partly toothed wheel 27, and the .adjacent disc 28 turn together backwards a predetermined distance, which is increased as the value of the ticket being issued, rises.
`It is impossible for ticket levers 22, the total value represented by which, exceeds the value-of the money received, to be depressed far enough to issue a ticket or tickets, provided the indicator 120 disc 18`is first correctly set, and if the amount represented by all of the ticket levers 22 operated, failsto equal the amount of money received, the drumv 8 is left in a position, in which the slides of magazines 2 Vare capable of being operated per 125 medium of the hand lever l2, to return to the operator via the delivery chute 14, the excess money tendered. If the amount represented by all of the ticket levers 22 operated, equals the amount received, only a ticket or tickets for said amount is obtainable, no slides 3 being capable of operation to discharge coins from magazines, owing to the drum 8 having been returned to its neutral position by operation of the ticket issuing levers 22.
In order to provide for the discharge from the machine of coins of less value than the lowest value coin held in any of the magazines, and following'the setting of the indicator disc 18 to correspond with an amount of money received, additional magazines 42 are provided from each of which a single coincan be obtained simultaneously, or from only one` of which Aa singlev coin can be obtained. These additional magazines 42 are controlled by the ticket issuing levers 22e, l
22d, each of which when depressed operates a ticket issuing device 24 in a manner similar to the ticket issuing levers 22. In order that the lever 22cmay issue a ticket vand at the same time cause the discharge of a single coin from only one of the additional magazines 42, there is provided a lever 43, which pivots on the shafts 23, said lever 43 when the ticket issuing lever 22C is depressed, being engaged by a projection 44 from the latter and being depressed thereby to cause an arm 45 at its inner end engaged with the slide 3 of one of the additional magazines 42 to be operated and discharge a coin into the chute 14, said lever 22o simultaneously depressing the bar 25 which serves to impart reverse turning movement to the selector drum 8 as before described.
If the issue of two coins is required from the additional magazines 42 simultaneously with the issue of a ticket, the ticket issuing lever 22d is depressed, and a further lever 46 is mounted on the shafts 23, adjacent the lever 43 adapted to be depressed by the ticket issuing lever 22a. Ticket issuing lever 22d is formed with a projection 47, so that when it is depressed it engages both levers 43 and 46, `each of which has an arm 45 connected with a slide 3 of one of the additional magazines 42. Depression ofV the lever 22d engages the bar 25, downward movement of which is responsible for backward turning movement being imparted to the selector drum A8, depression of said lever 22d therefor bringing about the issue of ticket, the discharge of a coin from each additional magazine 42, and causing reverse turning movement to be imparted to the drum 8.
If money received exceeds4 in value, the total value of the ticket issued by either lever 22c'or 22d, and a coin or coins discharged from the additional magazines 42, the surplus value is obtained from the magazine 2 by operation of the lever 12 as already described. v
If following the issue of tickets, by operation of ticket issuing levers, the selector drum 8 has not been returned to its neutral position, the latter is obtained on operation of the lever 12, as follows:-
A barrel 48 on the spindle 8a of the drum 8 has attached thereto one end of a cable 49, the' other end of which is attached to a lever 12b. Forward rotation of the drum winds the cable 49 on the barrel 48 until with the drum 8 turned forwards as far as it will go, the cable 49 is without slack therein. Downward movement of the lever 12 to eject coins from the magazines 2 pulls the cable 49 and returns the drum 8 to its neutral position.
The coin distributor 41 to the magazines 2, comprises an inclined plate containing a slot 50 increasing in width towards and over the larger magazines 2, the coins gravitating down the chute 40 from the slot 39 and running down the ledge 51 on the inclined plate until they drop through the slot 50 into the magazines intended to receive them. The additional magazines 42 are hand charged.
The ticket rolls are perforated or formed so that tickets projected from the slot 25a can be readily detached by hand.
What we do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America 1. A ticket issuing and change giving machine, comprising in combination, coin magazines; a coin ejecting slide fitted to each magazine; a slide selector effective to make one or more slides operative to eject coins having a predetermined and fixed arrangement of change values provided thereon, selective means covering a range of values of money to be tendered, geared with said selector, for moving `the latter inone direction; means geared with said selector, for imparting return movement to the latter; and means for operating selected slides to eject coins from magazines.
2. A ticket issuing and change giving machine, comprising in combination, coin magazines; a coin ejecting slide fitted to each magazine; a slide selector effective to make one or more slides operative to eject coins, having thereon tracks comprising recessed and unrecessed portions; levers on said slides, coacting with said tracks; selective means covering a range of values of money to be tendered, geared with said selector, for moving the latter in one direction; means geared with said slide selector for imparting return movement to the latter; and means for operating selected slides to eject coins from magazines.
3. A ticket issuing and change giving machine, comprising in combination coin magazines; a coin ejecting slide fitted to each magazine; a slide selector effective to make one or more slides operative to eject coins having thereon tracks comprising recessed and unrecessed portions ar ranged to provide combinations in lines at right angles to said tracks; levers on said slides co-acting with the tracks; selective means covering a range of values of money to be tendered, geared with said slide selector, for moving the latter in one direction; means geared with said slide selector for imparting return movement to the latter; and means for operating selected slides to eject coins from magazines.
4. A ticket issuing and change giving machine, according to claim l, wherein the slide selector is provided with tracks comprising ribs formed with recessed and unrecessed portions and wherein the slides carry levers which connect selected slides with the slide operating means upon the selector being adjusted to a predetermined position.

A ticket issuing and change giving machine, according to claim 1, wherein the slide selector is provided with tracksV comprising ribs formed with recessed and unrecessed portions, arranged in combinations extending in lines at right angles to the tracks, and wherein the slides carry levers, the forward ends of which are arranged in a line below said slide selector.

A ticket issuing and change giving machine, according to claimY 1, wherein the slide selector rotary is rotatably mounted and provided with tracks of recessed and unrecessed portions extending around its periphery and wherein the slides carry levers the forward ends of which are arranged in a line below said drum, said levers providing connections between the slides and the operating means for the llatter upon the drum being set in a predetermined position.

A ticket issuing and change giving machine, according to claim 1, wherein the selective means covering the range of values of money to be tendered comprise a rotary disc geared with the slide selector, depressible finger pieces on said disc; and a stop with which said finger pieces co-act to limit turning of the disc and movement of the slide selector in one direction.

A ticket issuing and change giving machine, according to claim 1, wherein the means for returning the selector to initial position, comprise levers, andv wherein the gearing for effecting return movement of the selector is provided between each of said levers and the slide selector for imparting reverse movement thereto upon any lever being operated.
9. Aticket issuing and change giving machine chine, sales-key levers; a lever in operable connecton with and operable by any of said key levers; a toothed quadrant on said lever; a partly toothed Wheel, a brake disc mounted adjacent the toothed wheel and having an inclined slot therein, a rack, and a spring pressed paWl on the partly toothed Wheel, said paWl carrying a pin entered in the inclined slot in said disc and having a tooth adapted to engage in said rack to cause the wheel, rack and disc to move as a unit.
