Description

Patented Dec. 26, 1933 1,941,231 ALLOY or BERYLLIUM AND ALUMINUM Joseph Kent The PATENT OFFICE Beryllium Smith, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Corporation,
New York, N. 1.,
a corporation of Delaware Serial I No. 582,658.
This invention relates 2 Claims.
to alloys in which aluminum predominates, and to which alloys, other 'metals, beryllium particularly,
are added not only to improve strength and mechanical character- 5 istics, but also at once to reduce the specific l5 erably improved as it greater resistand similar inknown that the addition of aluminum results in an alloy which pure aluminum varying linearly volume. At the same time, the resistance to corrosion is considberyllium content increases.
Because of the relatively high cost of beryllium,
it is frequently desirable to keep the proportion of this element as low as possible, yet not sacrifice its valuable strengthening effects. For this reason, I have sought for combinations of metals which, added to aluminum-beryllium alloys,
would intensify the effects of beryllium, and this invention relates to alloys of such type. Only those alloys higher in aluminum than rriberyllium are here considered.
I have found that, by the addition of small quantities of without simultaneous ties of molybdenum,
additions manganese and vanadium, with or of small quantithe effect of beryllium is 80 magnified, and the resulting alloy has materially greater strength, workability,
ability, as well as resistance to corrosion,
castability, bendthan the simple binary alloy possesses. In general,
I prefer compositions in which v aluminum andberyllium is at per-cent, with the the content of least ninety-five aluminum running from above to about and the beryllium from about 25% to about 40%.
I prefer that the amounts of manganese, vanadium and molybdenum, if used,

terially in excess of 5% in the aggregate, and that approximately equal amounts of each be emplayed-say from about /2% to about 2 /z%, depending upon whether molybdenum is also added. v
The manganese molybdenum and vanadium, with the molybdenum if desired, as well as the beryllium for alloys low in beryllium, may be added as a master alloy, alloyed with any convenient percentage of aluminum. These metals 06 may also be added individually directly to an aluminum-beryllium alloy previously made in any of the standard manners, or the final alloy can be formed by reduction of convenient manganese and vanadium sired) compounds directly by the the previously formed binary aluminum-beryllium alloy.
The multi-constituent alloys made in accordance with this invention are particularly well suited for castings requiring strength beyond 76 that of ordinary aluminum, or even of its stronger alloys, like duralumin. They are also well adapted for use in sheet form, as in the case of airplane wings or fuselage parts, or wherever the combination of low specific gravity, great 80 strength and ready bendability without breaking is essential.
I claim:
1. An alloy of approximately the following composition, aluminum from about 55% to about 70%, beryllium from about 25% to 40%, and the balance manganese molybdenum and vanadium from about /2% to 2 each.
2. An alloy of approximately the following composition: aluminum from about 55% to about 70%, beryllium from about 25% to about 10%, the balance manganese, molybdenum and vanadium from about /2% to 2 each but not in excess of 5.0% in the aggregate.
