Description

A. J. G. GETTY ANTITHEFT DEVICE Dec. 26, 1933.
Filed Sept. 8, 1952 M I nuentor jzad'r/Vdariam 'ez Patented Dec. 26, 1933 UNITED STATES 1,940,747 AN'IITHEFT DEVICE Andrew J. Gordon Getty, McComas, W. Va. Application September 8, 1932. Serial No. 632,218
2 Claims.
This invention relates to devices for securing an electric bulb in a socket against unauthorized removal.
In accordance with the present invention it is proposed to provide the stem of the light bulb, and the lamp socket with means for accommodating a lock, in a manner to prevent unauthorized removal of the bulb from the socket; and more particularly it is an object of this invention to so provide the stem of the lamp bulb and the socket as to permit of the use of a more or less conventional padlock for securing the stem'of the bulb within the socket.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
wherein:-
Figure .1 is an elevational view showing the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view substantially on the' line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational View of the stem portion of a lamp bulb.
Figure 4 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a conventional form of padlock, the shackle and barrel being shown separated, and a portion of the insulating cover for the shackle broken away and shown in section.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawing it will be seen that the invention is shown as applied to a conventional lamp socket 5, and an electric bulb 6 provided with the usual stem '7 adapted to be screwed into the socket 5.
As shown in the drawing it is proposed to provide the stem 7 of the bulb 6 with a groove 8 elongated circumferentially of the stem, and to provide in the walls of the socket shell 5 a pair of relatively spaced apertures 9 with which the taken substantially groove 8 alines when the stem 7 is in final thread-' ed position within the socket 5 as will be clear from a study of Figure 2.
PATENT OFFICE lock including the barrel 10a and the shackle 10b. In the present instance the shackle 10b may have either or both sides thereof covered by a jacket 11 of suitable insulating material such as rubber or thelike and as shown in the drawing.
In using the lock, one side of the shackle 10b is passed through the aligned groove 8 and apertures 9 as shown in Figure 2 after which the barrel 10a is applied to the ends of the sides of said 7 shackle 10b inthe usual manner, and it will be apparent that with the lock thus applied to the stem '7 and socket 5 an unscrewing of the bulb from the socket is positively prevented, and the bulb is thus held against unauthorized removal.
It will be noted, as shown in Figure 2, that the space between the parallel sides of the shackle 10b in actual practice will be such as to accommodate the portion of the socket 5 between the apertures 9 in a'manner to preclude the application of a suitable tool to the shackle 10b for the purpose of severing the same or otherwise efiecting a removal of the lock.
It is also to be understood that while I have herein shown and described the invention as embodying a combination lock, a key controlled lock or the like may be used as may be found desirable.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes, modifications and improvements coming within the scope. of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is: i
1. In combination, a lamp socket provided with a pair of spaced apertures in the wall thereof, a bulb having a stem for threaded reception within the socket, and being also provided with a groove to align with said apertures, and a padlock including a shackle engaging the groove and apertures for securing the stem within the socket against unauthorized removal.
2. In a device of the class described, a socket,
a lamp having a stem provided with a peripheral groove, and said socket having spaced apertures; and a padlock including a shackle having one side thereof engaging the groove and extending through the apertures in the socket.
ANDREW J. GORDON GETTY.
