BUNG-PLUG Loox.y
.Application filed May 7, 1925. Serial No. 28,672.
This invention relates to a lock for the bung plugs of steel drums, and one of the principal objects of the invention resides in the provision of ya device of this character which is effective to prevent the theft of the contents of the drum when the drums are left unguarded on loading platforms alongside the roadway, in the fields, or in other places..
A further object is to provide a device of this character and having these advantages and capacities and which is of simple and f durable construction, reliable and effective in operation and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
' Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompany drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure .1 is afragmentary view in elevation illustrating the cover or bill applied to a bung plug constructed in accordance with the present invention, the padlock being omitted, and
Figure 2 is a view partly in 'section and partly in central vertical section of the arrangement shown in Figure 1, the padlock being shown in'dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a fragment of a steel drum -which has an internally threadedllange 2 extending inwardly around the bunghole. A bung plug 3 is provided and has an internally threaded portion 4 engaged with the internally threaded flange 2 and also has a. square portion 5 to facilitate the application of a wrench for the bung plug for the purpose of screwing the same in position or removing the same from the drum. An angular flange 6 is integrally formed with the-.bung plug and is designed to compress the gasket or washer 7 disposed between the flange 6 and 'the 'adjacent portion of the darum.
In accordance with the present invention -an eye bdlt, designated generally at 8, is swiveled on the bung plug and in the embodiment shown the eye-bolt has a shank 9 extending through an opening 10 provided in the bung plug into an internally threaded cavity 11. The cavity 1l opens to the inside of the steel drum and is closed'by a small plug 12 threaded into the cavity from the inner face of the plug. A nut 13 -is threaded on the lshank 9 of the eve bolt within the cavity 11 and is held in place by a cotter pin 14. The head or eye of the bolt 8 is designited at 15A and projects beyond the bung p ug.
A bell or cup-shaped'cover 16 is placed over the plug 3 and has a central opening 17 which permits the eye 15v of the eye bolt 8 to project outwardly beyond the cover or bell. A padlock, designated generallyat 18, has its shackle engaged with the eye 15 of the eye bolt to hold the bell or cover 16 in place and prevent removal of the bung plug 3 until vafter the padlock 18 has been released and the bell o r cover 16 taken from the drum.
With this arrangement both the bell and the lock are freely rotatable with respect to the plug so that no Wrench or punch can be used on the plug unlessthe lock and bell are destroyed. In this Way the contents of the drum may be guarded and protected against theft or removal by unauthorized persons.
Iclaim: i v
In combination with a drum having a bung plug threaded thereinto, a bolt having a shank slidably and rotatably fitted in an opening in the bung plug, the bung plug h aving an opening receiving the shank and having a cavity into which the shank projects, a nut threaded on the portion of the shank lying within Ithe cavity of the plug and leaving the shank free to move axially relative to the plug for swivelling the shank 'to the plug, said bolt having an eye at its outer end, a'bell enclosing the plug and having an opening through which the eye projects, the bell being rotatable relative to the plug, and a lock engageable with'thev eye of the bolt for holding' thebell against removal while leaving the saune-free to rotate, said cavity opening to the inner face'of the plug,
and a lsmall plug for closing the cavity.
