Description

H. v. GOULD CABLE CONNECTER FOR OUTLET BOXES 7 Filed Jan. 12, 1927 IN VEN TOR.
Harry V Gou'li A TTORNEYS.
Patented July 17, 1 8.
"UNITED {STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Y may v. GOULD, or Bamearon'r, oo mao'rrcu'r.
CABLE CONNECTED FOB CUTLET BOXES.
Application filed January 12, 1927 Serial Io. 100,595.
My invention refers to cable connecters, for use in joining electric cables to 'cable boxes, switch boxes, outlet boxes'and the like. v
The purpose of the invention is to provide a simplified and improved form of cable.
uniformly positioned within the box when secured thereto by lock nut.
I further provide an improved form of nut for use inconnection with the before mentioned threadedv portion of the connecter and adjacent to the inner side of the box,
which can be readily set up or loosened by the assistance of a screw driver, chisel or other form of small hand tool, and where the use of a wrench would be prohibited by reason of the limited amount of space within the box.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides and consists in the 'con-' struction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, 1t being understood that various changes in the form, proportion size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departure from the spirt, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Similar characters of reference denote like .or corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and upon which:
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a metal connecter box having one of my improved cable connecters positioned therein, together with a short iece of electric cable, secured within the ca 1e connecter.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional'view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detached side view of one of my improvedcable connecters, the nut being omitted.
immediately adjacent the Fig. 4 is an inner end view of the connecter shown in Fig. 3; and,
. Fig. 5 shows a detached perspective view of the nut employed for securing the cable ggnnecters in position in the holes of the x. Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 10 re resents a commercial; form of a metal cab e box having suitable screw holes 11 positioned therein, and round pressed-in portions 12, which may be knocked out to form holes in which the cable connecters are positioned. 13-43 represents in-turned ears in which are positioned suitable binding screws 14.'
The connecter proper-is preferably formed of cast iron and comprises an elongated cylindrical member 15 having a central longitudinal opening 16 therein, the inner end portion of said opening being slightly contracted as at 17 to form an annular shoulder against which the flexible metal casing 18 of .the cable 19 abuts. The connecter further includes an outer annular rib or flange portion 20, from the inner side of which projects points 21 that form footings to engage the outer face of the connecter box holes. These points also serve in the manufacture of the connecters as a means against which the threading dies are fed and stopped in the threading operation, -.to limit the cut in a manner to prevent breaka e which is liable to occur'if the dies are Eed direct against the flange.
The outer end portion of the connecter is for, the most part cylindrical in form, thou h includes an outer flat surface 22 in 'whic is positioned 'a 'set screw 23 for engagement with a side portion of the cable so as to readily bind the same as indicated in Fig. 2, to hold it in osition. The inner cylindrical portion of t e'connecter, is provided with a peripheral thread 24 which extends from the outer end to the flange '20, and in practice serves to enter the hole in the box, and to receive the special form of clamping nut 25, which is positioned upon the t read and against the inner wall of the box in a manner to secure the connecter in position. corner portions, with notches a forming shoulders against which the blade of a screw driver may be positioned so that when the handle of'the screw driver is hit the nut The nut 25 is provided in its will be turned to tighten o'r' loosen it upon the threaded portion of the connecter and in a way to more firmly engage or release the 'oonnecter box.
5 This construction provides a practical and efficient form of connecter' which canb'e firm- 1y secured to connector boxes in a manner to reliably hold an armored cable without its coming loose and pulling out, with the 10 adjustment or reposit1oning of the cables.
Having thus described my invention, what I' claim and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' A cable connecter comprising a cylindrical sleeve, an external annular flange intermel5 diate its ends and including a series of pointed projections formed upon one side of said flange, threads upon the outer periph cry of one end portion of said sleeve adjacent said points, a nut fitted upon the 20 threads, andmeans upon the other end of said sleeve for clamping a cable.
