mony with the flush finished surface of a highgrade cabinet or surrounding furniture and since they are not resilient, labels occasionally stick in them, causing difliculty in the insertion or removal thereof.

In accordance with the present invention, it is proposed to employ a type of label holder in which the label is mounted behind a window in the front surface of the drawer, cabinet or other receptacle, so that the label holder itself is invisible from the front surface when the label is in place.

An additional feature of the invention relates to a label holder into which the label is inserted preferably from some point at the rear of the front plane of the drawer or receptacle. A further feature of the invention relates to a label holder for use in connection with a sheet metal drawer or receptacle front having an opening therein, which label holder is attached to the lining of the front in such a manner that the label is firmly held against the edges of. the mentioned opening. A still further feature of the invention relates to the flexibility of the label holder which insures a snug fit of the label against a substantial portion of the window opening in the receptacle front regardless of the thickness of the label, and at the same time permits the label holder to be pressed backward if 40 necessary, to facilitate the insertion or the removal of the label.

For a clearer understanding of the invention, reference is made to the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a filing cabinet having three drawers, each of which is provided with a label holder of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a drawer front taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with a portion thereof broken away; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a drawer front taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with portions thereof broken away; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a fragment of the drawer front with a label holder shown in operative relation thereto, said label holder being represented as mounted on the drawer liner; Figs. 5 and 6;

Referring especially to Fig. 1, 5 designates a sheet metal filing cabinet of any well-known construction, having three compartments arranged in vertical relation to receive filing receptacles or drawers 6. Each drawer includes a drawer front 7 preferably formed of sheet metal and having a rectangular opening 8 stamped therein with the material adjacent the opening rolled backward so that the edges 9 of the material at the opening are substantially parallel withthe plane of the drawer front. It will be noted from Figs. 2 and 3, that the material at the edges of the drawer front is bent backward toengage a reinforcing lining 10 (sometimes referred to as a liner) which is spaced a short distance from the drawer front and forms therewith a hollow chamber. While the edges of the drawer front may be attached to the edges of the lining in various ways well-known in the art, the mounting arrangement of these members shown in Figs. 2 and 3 has been found to be especially satisfactory. At the top of the drawer front, the sheet material is bent backward to form a rectangular portion 11 which in turn is provided with an extension strip 12 extending downwardly parallel to the drawer front. The material at the bottom of the drawer is formed to have a portion 13 extending rearwardly from the drawer front and at right angles thereto, whichportion has an integral part 14. extending upwardly parallel to the drawer front. The part 14 is provided at its upper edge with an integral strip 15 extending at right angles to the drawer front to' engage the sheet material 16 forming the bottom of the drawer. This strip may be attached to the drawer bottom by spot welding or by any other suitable means.

The material at each side of the drawer front is formed to havea portion 1'7 extending rear wardly at right angles to the drawer front and an integral part 18 extending inwardly from the portion 17 to the side 19 of the drawer. The part 18 of the drawer front has an integral strip 20 extending rearwardly in engagement with the drawer side 19- to which it may be, attached by spot welding or by any other suitable. means.

In order to give rigidity to the drawer and to the drawer front, the lining 10 is mounted in spaced relation to the drawerfront '7. While the invention is not limited to the details of mounting the lining with respect to the drawer front, the arrangement herein disclosed has been found to be especially satisfactory. The bottom and side edges of the lining are provided with rectangular flanges 21, 22 and 23, which respectively engage the sides 19 of the drawer and the bottom 16 thereof, while the free edges of these flanges engage the rear surface of the drawer front. The material at the top of the lining is formed with a rectangular portion 24 which is bent forward to engage the front of the drawer, and with an integral angular portion 25, the free edge of which engages the corner defined by the portions 11 and 12 of the top of the drawer front. The lining may be assembled into the receptacle front 7 by inserting the edge of the angular portion 25 at the top of the liner into the corner defined with portions ll and 12 at the top of the drawer front, while the lower edge of the lining is held at a position by the nuts and bolts 4 which hold the drawer pull'3 in position; It will be understood that with this construction and mounting, the drawer front '7 and the lining 1O definea hollowcom'partment closed at its sides.

The upper horizontal portion 24 of the lining is provided with a slot 26 of sufficient length to receive a label 27' which maybe inserted therethrough into position behind the window 8. The

label, when thus inserted, is supported behind this window by a label holder 28 which is provided on three sides with marginal flanges such as 29 and'30' which are bent toward the rear face of the drawer front adjacent the edges of the window opening 8. This label holder may be supported in any suitable manner in the position herein shown, but it has been found convenient to mount it resiliently'on the lining 10. This mounting construction includes an inclined'portion 31 which serves to guide the label into the label holder 28, and an attaching strip 32 integral with the portion 31 and extending into engagement withfthe'front surface of the lining 10 to which it is attached. as indicated at 33 by any suitable means, such as, by spolt welding. The' label holder is also provided'with a rear wardly extending flange 34 which serves to give partial rigidity to the lower edge of the label holder and functions as a stop when its rear edge engages the lining 10 as the operator springs back the label holder in order to facilitate the insertion and removal of the label.

From the foregoing description, it will be understood that the label 27 is preferably inserted from the rear of the drawer front, such as by inserting it through the slot 26 while the inclined portion 31 of the label holder guides the label into the holder where it is'held in close engage ment with the edges '9 of the rolled material of the drawer front which define the window opening 8."

In the'modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the lining 10 is itself shaped to form'a label holder for holding'the label behind the window 8 in the receptacle front '7. In this arrangement the lining has formed integrally therewith, the label holding panel 38 which is joined to the principal plane 39 of the lining by inclined portion 40 which serves as a guide for' inserting the label, while the other sides of this panel maybe joined to the principal plane of the liner by inclined portions 42, 43 and 44. While the portions 42, 43' and 44 are shown as plane'surfaces, they may also be of curved form as is most expedient. At the sides of the label Holding panel 38, there are provided lugs 45, 46

and 47 struck out from the material of the inclined portions 42, 43 and 44 respectively, which lugs are bent toward the receptacle front 7 and surround a portion of the window 8. In order to give a flexible mounting for the label holding panel 38, so that the label may be pressed firmly against the edges 9 of the window and yet permit this panel to be pressed away from the receptacle front to facilitate the insertion and the movement of the label, the lining 10, itself can be made, and usually is, sufficiently yielding to serve this purpose.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the label holder 60. is provided with flanges 61, 52 and 63 which are respectively fastened to the receptacle front '7 adjacent-the I window 8 by spot welding or other suitable means.

Whilethemethod of assembling and fastening the lining with respect to receptacle-front '7 has not been disclosed in connection with these last mentioned modifications, it may be similar'to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, although any well-known form of receptacle front and lining construction may be used with any of the forms-of the invention. r

The construction herein disclosed, is the preferred forms of the invention, but it will be understood that it includes all types of receptacle label holders wherein the label is supported behind a window in the receptacle front. While the liner or lining has been shown to be co -extensive with the area of the drawer front, and has been shown with its edges in engagement with the edges of the material of the drawer front, the invention is not so limited, but in fact, the liner may be omitted entirely or may be ccextensive with only the upper portion of the drawer front, or the edges of the lining may be spaced from the edges of the drawer front in any manner found to be most feasible. The slot for inserting or removing the label may be located in the side or bottom edges of the drawer front or liner as well as at the top as shown, or the label may be inserted or removed at the rear of the lining as shown in Fig. '7. Furthermore, it is not essential for the label to extend through one of the flanges forming the edges of the front and liner as shown in the various arrangements or for the label to extend even beyond the body portion of the label holder.

What I claim is:

1. In an article of the class described, a receptacle front member having a window opening therein, a lining member substantially co-extensive with said front wall member, and means between the principal planes of said members for holding a label behind said window opening, said means normally tending to move said label toward said window opening.

2. In an article of the class described, a front wall member having a window opening therein defined by an inwardly extending marginal flange, and a label holder supported adjacent said window opening, said label holder having a marginal flange projecting in the direction of said window flange and surrounding at least a portion of the same.

3. In an article of the class described, a sheetmetal receptacle front provided with a window opening therein at a substantial distance from the top of said front, and a label holder for supporting a portion of a label against the material of said front member, said label holder being provided with a label guide extending to a point near the edge of said receptacle front.

4. In an article of the class described, a front wall member provided with a window opening therein, a lining member for said front wall member mounted in spaced relation thereto, a

label holder mounted between said members to support a label behind said window opening, said label holder at one edge being provided with a flange extending adjacent to said window opening and at its opposite edge with a label guide extending to said lining member.

5. In an article of the class described, a receptacle front member provided with a window opening, a lining member forming a compartment with said front member, one of said members being provided with a label-receiving slot at one side of 'said opening, a label holder supported within said compartment for holding a label at said opening, said label. holder being provided with a guide adjacent said slot and being provided with a flange extending toward said front member atthe' side ofsaid opening. opposite said slot.

6. In an'article of the class described, a receptacle front member provided with a window opening, said front member having a marginal flange on one of its sides, a lining member'mounted in spaced relation to said frontmember and having a portion engaging said marginal-flange, one of said members being provided with a label-receiving opening adjacent said flange, and a label holder-supported behind said window opening in the space between said members, and normally tending to move a label supported thereon toward said window opening.

7. In an article of the class described, a receptacle front member having a window opening therein, a lining member supported in spaced parallel relation therewith, certain of the edges of said members being in engagement to form a substantially closed chamber, except for a slot along a portion of one edge, and a label support held between said members'having a flange extending toward said front member at the side of said window opening opposite said slot and an extension on the side opposite said flange,

said extension serving as a guide for a label inserted through said slot.

8. In an article of the class described, a metal receptacle front member having a window opening therein, a lining member supported in spaced parallel relation therewith, certain of the edges of said members being in engagement to form a substantially closed chamber, except for a sloton its fourth side engaging said lining member a at a place near said slot.

9. In an article of the class described, a sheet metal receptacle front member having a window opening therein, the material of said front member at said opening being formed into flanges extending rearwardly thereof, a lining member mounted in spaced parallel relation to said front member, certain of the edges of said members being brought into engagement to form a substantially closed chamber, except for a slot opening into said chamber, and a label holder formed of resilient material and mounted on one of said members to hold a label inserted through said slot into said label holder against certain of the edges of the window flanges on said front member.
