Anotherwobject of the invention resides in-the provision of a device of this character which-is inexpensive tomanufacture and assembleand which is extremely accurate in operation where- 120 by a block of wood having-letters formed thereon may be severed into individual vtypeleaving the edges of the'letters the correct distance from the edges of the type.

These objects and the several novel features of the inventionare hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a top plan view of a saw and my improved attachment showing the method of positioning the block of type.

Referring now to the drawings, the bed plate 1' of the machine is provided with an aperture 2 through which the periphery of the circular saw 3 extends, the same being driven by suitable mechanism (not shown). A groove 4 is formed in the upper surface of the bed plate 1 and in parallel relation to the cutting edge of the saw 3. A slide 5 is positioned in the groove 4 and the plate 6 is suitably secured thereto as by the screws 7. A finger or positioning device 16 is secured in theend of the bracketadjacent the saw 3 and extends a slight distance vbeyond the end of the bracket.
7 By referringto Fig. 3 it will be seen that the block of type 17 is formed of a plurality of raised letters 18 which are made in a machine forming no part of this invention. It will be. noted that 5 the distance between the portion of one letter and the adjacent portion of the next succeeding letter is uniform and the distance therebetween is equal to the thickness of the finger 16.
It will be understood of course that the distance between the letters 18 is ordinarily slightly greater than the thickness of the saw so that when the several letters are severed to form individual type as shown in Fig. 4 that the edges of the letters will remain a fixed predetermined dis- .tance from the edges of the individual type.
It will be understood of course that the sides of the block of type 17 will have a smooth finish as will the upper surface of the bed plate 1 so that the block may be easily slid along the bed plate and into engagement with the saw 3.
It will be noted that the end of the guard 8 adjacent the plate 12 is in close proximity to the bottom surface of the block 17 so that it is practically impossible for the operator to get his fingers m5 injured by coming in contact with the saw during the sawing operation.
The operation of the device is as follows: the operator will place the block 17 so that the type face engages against the fiat surface 12, of the plate 11, and the space between the letters aligns with the finger 16 and the lower side of the block 17 rides on the upper surface of the bed plate 1. The member 9 and the block 17 will be gripped by the hands of the operator as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the member 9 and the block 17 moved toward the saw to the position shown in Fig. 2 whereby the cutting edge of the saw will sever one of the pieces of type from' the remaining block and the member 9 will again be moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the block 17 moved over so that finger 16 is positioned be tween the next succeeding pair of letters and the member 9 and the block17 again moved toward the saw.
This process will be continueduntil all of the block 17 has been severed into individual type. I preferably provide a guard 19 which is secured to the member 9 and the plate 11 so that if the member 9 is moved a sufiicient distance to permit the periphery of the saw to extend therebehind that the same will be covered by the guard 19.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that I have provided an attachment for a sawing machine that will permit a block of type to be correctly positioned for sawing the same into individual type and further, that the device is simple and extremely accurate in operation, to correctly position the block for the sawing operation and that the same is provided with safety means for preventing injury to the hands of the operator.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A device for use in combination with a circular saw comprising a stationary positioning means, for engaging between the raised letters of a block of wood type, movable means for moving the block of type toward the saw comprising a plate transverse to the-saw and the line of which is intersected by said stationary engaging means and guide means for engaging said mov able means for causing the movable means to traverse a plane parallel to the cutting edge of the saw.
2. An attachment for use in combination with a circular saw and a bed plate, having an aperture through which the periphery of the saw extends, comprising a stationary finger for engaging between the raised letters of a block of wood type, movable means for moving the block of type toward the saw and out of engagement with the stationary finger, comprising a plate transverse to the saw, the line of which is intersected by said finger, a guide formed in the bed plate and in parallel relation to the cutting edge of the saw, means on the movable member for engaging the said guide whereby the movable member is caused to traverse a plane parallel to the cutting edge of the saw.
3. An attachment for use in combination with a saw, comprising a stationary finger for engaging between the raised letters of a block of wood type, movable means for moving the block of type toward the saw for cutting engagement therewith, said movable means comprising a plate transverse to the saw, the line of which is intersected by said finger and guide means for engaging the said movable means for causing the same to traverse a plane parallel to the cutting edge of the saw.

An attachment for use in combination with a circular saw comprising an adjustable sta tionary bracket having a positioning means for engaging between the raised letters of a block of wood type, movable means for moving the block of type toward the saw and out of engagement with the positioning means comprising a plate transverse to the saw and the line of which is intersected by said stationary engaging means, a guide extending parallel to the cutting edge of the saw, means on the movable member for engaging with the said guide whereby the movable member is caused to traverse a plane parallel to the cutting edge of the saw.
5; A device of the character described comprising a vertically extending plate having an aperture therein, guide means for causing the plate to traverse a predetermined path, a sta tionary bracket, a positioning device secured to the bracket and extending through the aperttue in the plate for engaging between the raised letters of a block of wood type, for correctly positioning the same prior to engagement of the wood block with a saw.
