IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SASH FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,992, dated August 7, 1877 application filed May 10, 1877.
To all lwhom it may concer/n.-
Beit known that I, LEMUEL PATTERSON, of Parker Oity, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of .this specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for locking and raising and lowering windows; and it consists in a slotted casting that is applied to the top of the upper sash, and 4to which a pivoted lever is attached, which lever both serves to raise and lower the sash and lock it in'position after it is raised, as will be hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents an ordinary window-frame, in
which are placed the two weighted sashes b,
in the usual manner. Secured to the top of the upper sash is a casting, c, a portion of which projects outwardly into the room and has an inclined slot, d, made therein. Pivoted or otherwise fastened to this slot is the lever e, which is of just sufficient length to reach down to the top of the lower sash. When the upper end of this lever is pushed inward against the inner endof thje slot, and the lower end of' the lever bears upon the topof the lower sash, the two sashes are locked rigidly in position, so that they can neither be raised nor lowered.
When it is desired to unlock these sashes the lower end oi' the lever is first drawn outward untilit is clear of the top of the lower sash, and then, the upper end is moved to the outer end ofthe slot, when thelever will hang freely 'downward and clear the lower sash. In this position the lever serves Ato raise and lower the upper sashat will.
Upon the top of the lower sash is placed a suitable metal plate, g, which serves to prevent the upper sash from being injured by the movement of the lever. This plate is so shaped as to prevent any lateral play of the lower end of the lever, whereby the rivet which passes through the slot might be injured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination v of the two sashes with casting c, Vhaving a down wardlyinclined slot, the lever e, and with or without the plate g, all arranged to operate substantially as specilied, for the purpose set forth.
