IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE AND FRUIT SLICERS.
Specifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. l93,959, dated August 7, 1877; application filed May 526, 1877.
' To all whom 'tt may concew Be it known that I, JEROME B. HOWARD, 'of Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Apple Corers and Slicers and' I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the Construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
' Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my apple corer and slieer. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of the same.
The nature of my nvention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for coring and slieing apples, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a box of any suitable dimensions, in the top of which is a square opening provided with aseries of knives, a a, diverging radially or otherwise from a central tube, B. The upper edge of this tube is sharpened, and forms the corer, and its lower endis continued in an inclined or curved manner out at the back of the box A, forming the spout G. The inner edges of the knives a are even or flush with the edge of the corer B, while the edges of said knives are made slightly eonvex, so that their outer ends will be lower than the inner ends and the corer.
On top of the box A is Secured a standard, D, providrd with two parallel arms, D' D extending over the corer, and the outer ends of said arms t'orming eyes or guides for the passage of a vertical rod, E, to the lower end of which the' plunger Gr is Secured. In the under face of this plunger is a central projection, d, of suitable size to enter the corer B, and from the center of said projection extends a pin or spur, c.
The plunger is operated by means of a lever, H, which is slotted at h for. the rod E to pass through, and said rod pivoted in this i slot. The inner end of the lever El is pointed and passed through a slotted frame, D projeeting from the standard D, between and in opposite direction from the arms D the lever turning in said frame as its fulcrum, and yet moving suficiently back and forth to admit of the plunger and its rod noving vertically up and down Without binding in its guides.
When the plunger is raised, the apple, having been previously peeled, is placed on the knives and eorer. The plunger then being brought down, the spur e first enters the apple to hold it steady, and as the plunger continues to descend it forces the apple down, which is then cored and slced, the pieces falling down between the knives into the box, while the core goes down into the oorer-tube B, and is pressed below the upper edge' thereof by the projection d on the plunger.
When the next apple is cored and slieed in the same manner, the first core is forced down through the spout 0 and disehar'ged at the back of the box.
The front of the box A is partially open, as at A ,so as to see the amount in the box. The remainder of the front is formed of a slide, A whiehis tobe removed for empty'- ing the box.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The box A, provided with the front opening A slide A and knives a a, having convex edges, in combination with the plunger Gr, having the projection d and spur e, corer B, and inciined spout, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The standard D, with arms D D and frame D in combination with the plungerrod E and lever H, substantially as and for the purposes -herein set forth.
