CAMPAIGN HAT RETAINER Filed Deo. l5, 1932 Patented Dec. l2, 1933 UNi'rED s'rA'rEs PATENT FFICE Application December 13, 1932 Serial No. 647,034
9 Claims.
This invention relates to hat straps that are used by thev olicers and enlisted men of various military and semi-military organizations to hold the Campaign" hat or similar headdress on the head and it is an object of the invention to provide a particularly designed buckle for use in combination with the strap to accomplish the above result and by the use of which adjustment due to moving the head or otherwise are automatically made so that the parts are readily and naturally adjusted to fit a particular need in all positions and be at all times comfortable to the wearer, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure l is a side View in elevation showing the device attached to a Campaign hat,
Figure 2, a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3, an enlarged view of the buckle and the straps attached thereto, and
Figure 4, a section on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In the drawing reference character 10 indicates the buckle which is formed of an elongated frame l1 and provided with a cross bar 12 at the center on which a tongue 13 is pivotally mounted. The tongue is of a length such that the free end rests against the end of the frame. This end of the frame 11 is bent or curved outwardly with respect to the other end, as clearly shown in Figure 4. A loop 14 extends around the end of the frame 11 opposite the end engaged by the free end of the tongue 13 and is formed integrally at its ends to the frame 1l opposite the ends of the cross bar 12, thus providing a semi-circular slot in which the looped end 15 of the strap 16 is mounted to slide freely. The end 15 passes through the loop 14 and is secured to a buckle 17 which is adapted to be adjustably secured to the Strap 16 passing therethrough by means of the tongue 18 engaging the openings 19 in the strap. A keeper 20 is provided intermediate the buckle 17 and the loop 14. A buckle similar to the buckle 10 is secured to the other end 21 of the strap 16 in a similar manner, except the loop portion is not adjustable. The cross bar 12 of each buckle 10 is provided with a short strap 22 secured thereto at one end.
A Campaign hat 23 formed with a crown 24 and a brim 25 is shown in Figure l. The brim 25 is provided with small eyelets 26 therein and positioned at each side thereof. A hat cord 27 is positioned around the oase of the crown and rests on the brim. The free ends of the straps 22 pass upwardly through the eyelets over the cord 27 and downwardly through the eyelets and are then secured to the buckles 10. In this manner the hat strap is secured to the hat and may then be adjusted to the length properly suited to the wearer by means of the buckle 1'7.
For the purpose of description a Campaign hat has been shown, however, it should be clearly understood that the strap may be attached to various other types of caps, hats, helmets or any other similar headdress worn by the members of military or like organizations. It may be clearly seen that the strap 16 may be Worn back of the head or tmder the chin as desired. The loop ends of the strap 16 may move freely in the loops 14 of the buckles 1G as the head is moved from one position to another without twisting and being uncomfortable to the wearer.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specication, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A device for securing a hat on a persons head comprising a flexible strap attached at one end to said hat, a buckle having an enlarged portion formed thereon to which the other end of said strap is secured and additional flexible means for securing said buckle to said hat, substantially as set forth.
2. A device for securing a hat on a persons head comprising a flexible strap provided with an adjustable loop on one end, a xed loop on the other end, buckles provided with loop portions adapted to be engaged by said adjustable and xed loops and additional flexible straps for securing said buckles to said hat, substantially as set forth.
3. Means for securing a hat on a persons head comprising a flexible strap, buckles provided with loops formed thereon adapted to be secured to each end of said strap, and means for detachably securing said buckles to said hat, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a hat strap formed of a plurality of flexible strap members of buckles each comprising a framework provided with a cross bar, a tongue pivoted on said cross bar, a loop formed on said frame work providing a slot for slidably securing the ends of one of said strap members to said buckles, the said cross bar and tongue adapted to serve as means for detachably securing the other flexible members to the hat, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a hat of means for holding said hat on a persons head comprising a flexible strap adapted to engage the back of a persons head, a buckle secured to each end of said strap adapted to permit said strap to slide radially therein,.and additional flexible straps xed to said buckles for detachably securing them to said hat, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a headdress of means for holding said headdress on a persons head comprising a exible strap having looped ends,
1' one of said looped ends being adjustable to Vary formed thereon to which the other end of said strap is secured and additional flexible means for securing said buckle to said hat, substantially as set forth.
8. A device for securing a hat on a persons head comprising a strap, buckles having enlarged portions formed thereon to which the ends of said strap are secured and additional exible means for securing said buckles to each side of said hat, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination with a hat strap of a buckle comprising a frame work provided with a transverse bar, a tongue pivoted at one end to said bar With the free end adapted to engage one end of said frame Work, a loop formed on said frame work around the other end thereof with its ends xed thereto opposite the ends of said transverse bar and positioned in the same plane with respect to the said end, substantially as set forth.
