The invention contemplates a joint or articulation of two main parts or components of suitable elastic or resilient material, such as rubber. One or both of the parts may be made of the kind of material mentioned. The parts are made 5101 of elastic or resilient material in order that they may constitute components of a doll which will have the proper feel, and also to produce the desirable natural effects. It is desirable that such parts will be properly articulated in order 15 that one part will be properly supported or mounted, and also adjustable in relation to the other part.
In accordance with the invention, one of the parts is provided with means to prevent stretchioi'ing or variation in its shape or size, so that proper articulation of the parts will be preserved.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a view of a head and body part of a doll selected to illustrate the features of the invention, the head shown partly in section;

Figure 3 is a detail section showing a modification of the retaining means;
Figure 4 is a View somewhat similar to Figure 551, showing a further modification;
Figure 5 is a perspective view ofthe retainer used in the modification shown in Figure 4.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 1, it will be apparent that there has been shown a 4op'dolls head and an upper portion of the dolls body. These parts 10 and 11 are made of elastic or resilient material such as high grade rubber. The body 11 has a neck 12 integral therewith, and
45.312 and serves to prevent it from collapsing. The head 10 has a neck section 14 integral therewith which extends inwardly there0f,.and which surrounds an opening therein. In accordance with an important feature of the invention, means is fio provided which prevents the section 14 from expanding or stretching, and also to prevent change from its normal shape and size, for a purpose to appear hereinafter. The said means shown in Figures 1 and 2 consists of a rigid or metallic ii retainer of annular construction adapted to be applied to the section 14 to have portions thereof disposed on its opposite sides and over one edge thereof. The section 14 is of inwardly tapering formation and the said retainer 15 conforms thereto. This retainer consists of a ring 16, an f inner annular flange l7 integral with the ring 16, and bendable clamping members 18 integral with the ring 16. When the retainer 15 is applied to the section 14, the-ring 16 will be disposed over its innermost edge, the flange 1'7 will be disposed on the inside of the section 14, and the members will be disposed on the opposite side of the section 14. In this manner the section 14 will be prevented shape and size.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that, when the head 10 is mounted on the body 11, the neck 12 on the body will bereceived in the retainer 15. In accordance with well known practice, the head 10 is connected with the body by an elastic element 19 which has one end connected with the member 13 and its opposite end being connected'with the head 10. In this manner the head 10 will be yieldingiy mounted or supported and will also be adjustable in relation to the body 11. It will be obvious that the member 13 prevents the elastic or resilient neck 12 from collapsing, and that the retainer 15 prevents the section 14 from stretching while preserving the shape and size, and that therefore 35 the retainer 15 in cooperation with the member 13 preserves the proper jointing or articulation of the head 10 andbody 11.
If desired, the retainer may be provided with a reinforcing cross member 20, which may be integral with the ring 16 or may constitute a separate part secured to the ring, as shown in the present instance. This member 20 has a hole 21 to accommodate the element 19.
If desired, each of the clamping members 18 may be provided with an integral prong or burr 22, as shown in Figure 3, adapted to impale or to clinch the section 14.
In Figure 4 there is shown a modification which is the equivalent of the construction shown in Figure 1. Similar features are designated by numerals corresponding to those in Figure 1. In the construction shown in Figure 4, the neck section 14 is provided with a bead 23 which provides a groove to receive an inelastic ring 24 which surrounds the section 14 and tapers similarly to the section 14. The bead 23 prevents the ring 24 from slipping off the section 14. It will be ap- I parent that the ring 24 will prevent stretching of from stretching or losing its 7 the section 14 and will also preserve its normal shape and size.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the constructions described are of such character that the head 10 will not ride down on the neck 12 of the body 11 and distort the shape of the latter under the influence. of the connecting element 19 which is necessary to draw the parts together to maintain their association.
It is to be understood that these constructions may be employed in conjunction with the arm and leg members as applied to the body of the doll. It will also be obvious may be obtained in a case where ,the inserted portion, such as the neck 12 on the body 11; is of rigid material.
I claim:
