- Application August 27, 1929. No. 388,848 20mm. (01; 215 -43) This invention relates to a closure and aims to provide a device of this character which will present functionally and structurally improved characteristics over previous articles of like nature as heretofore provided.
While the features of the invention may be employed in numerous different associations, they are primarily intended for use in connection with a dispensing receptacle such, for example, as an oil can or other type of container in which comparatively' small amounts of the fluid contents are to be dispensed at one time. In such association, the present invention aims to providela closure which will prevent the probability of any of the contents escaping accidentally from within the container, even although the closure may have been used any number of times.
A further object of the invention is that of providing a closure in which the parts may readily be operated, and in which such parts will provide a fluid-tight seal, it being, moreover, an object to furnish a closure embodying relatively few parts capable of being economically manufactured, largely by automatic machinery.
With these and further objects in mind, reference is had to the attached sheet of drawing, illustrating one practical embodiment of the invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 shows a pouring spout in section;
Fig. 2 is a similar viewof the cap; and
hFig. 3 shows these parts in assembled relations ip.
In these views, the numeral 5 indicates the spout, which is provided with a pouring lip 6,
and, at the point short of such lip, is formed with a screw-thread 7. The bore 8 of this spout terminates in a preferably flared portion 9 providing a valve seat, as hereinafter described. The cap includes a shell or body 10 which may be of a generally conical shape, and have a recess formed with threads 11 corresponding to the threads '7. The outer face of this up may be formed with ridge portions 12 whereby the fingers of an operator may readily grip the same, in ,order to effectuate a relative turning between the cap and the spout. Extending from within *the base of the cap recess is a plug portion 13 preferably of an area and configuration such that it will cooperate with the seat 9.
Both the spout and cap are preferably formed of 'a, suitable metal such that both 'of them may be manufactured by any well known stamping or extrusion process.
Moreover, as shown, the side walls of thecap recess are preferably inclined inwardly to eartend parallel to the correspondingly'tapered adjacent portion of the spout, and these walls present an annular flange, orridge. 14 for cooperation with the adjacent spout portion.
In closures of this type as heretofore constructed, considerable difhculty has been experienced in that, under frequent use, it has been found that where cork has been employed, the latter has disintegrated, resulting in leakage. Moreover, where the pouring spout, or neck, has 65 been relatively heavy, the crushing effect of the parts coming into contact with each other-incident to the use of screw-threadshas'been so great that the sealing contact has been destroyed.
However, by means of the present invention, it will be observed that a valve structure is provided, first, between the stem 13 and the seat 9, and secondly, between the upper outer face portion of the spout'and the ridge, or flange, 14.75 Also, in view of the fact that the nozzle is of, relatively thin' metal, the end of' the spout will, at all times,--when the parts are associated with each other in sealing .contacHe subjected to both an inward and outward pressure, which will prevent a destructive crushing but will, at all times, afford an effective seal, preventing escape on the .part of the'fluid contained within the receptacle withwhich the sp ut is associated.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that, among others, the several objects of the invention aforenamed are achieved. It will, moreover, be understood that'numerous changes in construction, and rearrangements of the parts,
might be resorted to without departing from the 1. A closure including, in-combination, a nozzle formed with a bore, a cap.the bore of said nozzle being of relatively: restricted .area and at least one of said nozzle and cap elements comprising a body of relatively soft and deformable metal, screw-threads upon said cap and nozzle for forcing the former inwardly along the latter, a projecting portion forming a of said cap and extending into the bore of said nozzle and tending to force the nomle walls outwardly, and confining portions forming a part of, said cap and acting against the outer face'of said nozzle to press the same inwardly. 4 1
2. A closure including, in combination, a nozzle formed" with a bore and valve seats-adjacent the end of the nozzle and upon the .outer and inuer su faces thereof, a cap for said some, the 1m 1,937,ooo
a v p bore of said nozzle being of relatively restricted area and at least one of said nomle and cap elements comprising a body or relatively soft and deformable metal, tapered valve portions formin: a part of said cap and cooperating with the valve seats of said nozzle to iorce the same into engagement with the valve portions as said cap isapplied to said nozzle, and said cap being
