Description

Patented Nov. 23, 1933 UNITED sTATs rrr ries Application May 25, 1930, Serial No. 455,525
Renewed March 24, 1933 Claims.
YThis invention relates to a drawer of lniockdown readily assembled form an which, when assembled, is greatly strengthened and reiniorced at its corners by reason of the nietal connecting members utilized at the corners for tying the side and end members oi the drawer together and for holding them against disarrangeinent or separation.
The present invention is primarily concerned with an exceedingly simple and. practical construction of drawer, wherein the parte thereofA are very readily and easily machined and in which the assembly may be accomplished in the factory or at the place of shipment of the article of furniture in which the drawers are to be installed. The invention is directed to a novel, economical and practical structure for attaining the ends stated, at the saine time e'ecting a very material strengthening and reinforcing of the drawer structure.
An understanding of the invention may be had iron/1 the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a drawer made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view o a corner made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 3 is a raginentary perspective view showthe formation at the ends ci the sides and ends of the drawer with which the corner tie member shown is used.
Fig. l is a fragmentary horizontal section through one corner of a drawer after the parts have been assembled, and Y Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing a different form of metallic tie construction which may be used in the place oi that shown in Fig. 2.
Like re erence characters refer to like parts in the diierent figures of the drawing.
The drawer includes the usual vertical sides l, and ends 2 which, at their inner sides near their lower edges, are horizontally grooved, making grooves 3 for the reception or" the side and end ed es of a bottoni 4 which is held in place 'hen the two sides and two ends of the drawer are connected together.
Each end 2 of the drawer is of greater thickness than the sides l, and each end at its inner side and at each end is cut away making a right Vangle vertical recess 5; and in line with the vertical sides oi said recess, narrow grooves 6 andv 7 are cut, as shown in Fig. 3, which lie at right angles to each other. It is evident that in sawing the end member 2 of the drawer to remove the Ymaterial in making the right angle recess 5,
a continuation oi the saw cuts beyond where they meet provides the grooves 6 and 7.
Each side l at each end thereof and at its inner side is provided with a vertical groove 8 which lies substantially in the samev plane with the inner side oi the adjacent end 2 oi the drawer when the partsvare assembled. In addition` each oi the side members l oi the drawer at its outer side and at each end has a vertical rabbet 9 made therein, the depth oi which is the same as the thickness oil the metal from which the tie inembers used at the corners are made. Likewise the Luth of the grooves 6, l and 8 are substantially in, saine as the thickness of such metal.
The instal tie rneinbeil used at eachV corner oi the drawer may be that illustrated in Fig. 2. As there shown a length oi nat metal is bent longitudinally to 'provide two legs l0 and l1` at right angles to each other, the free edge portions of which are each turned at right angles to make vertical terminal lips 12. One of the legs, such l0 of the member, near the lower end Ythereof. has a notch i3 out away so designed that the upper side of the notch will. come against the upper side ol the drawer bottoni 4 when the tie` member is inserted and driven in place. At the vertical corner, where the legs 10 ll join, tongues 14 and l5, respectively are struckY from the legs l1 and l0, respectively, and, are in posi? tion in the planes oi' said legs l0 and l1. Each of these tongues at its outer freevertieal edge is cut'downwardly and inwardly, indicated'at i5, making each tongue in effect a' tooth which ireely permits the downward movement ofthe tie uiernber into place, but which will bite or gouge into the wood from which the sides and ends land 2 are made to prevent any upward movement yci such tie member after it has been inserted.
The assembly of the sides and ends and bottoin is simple. The bottom having been located in the grooves 3, at each corner of the drawer one of the metal tie members illustrated in Eig. 2 is inserted downwardly, the flanges l2 entering the groove 8 and the rabbet 9 and the tongues ifi and l5 entering the grooves 6 and 7, while the leg lo lies between one side of the recess 5 and the inner side of the side l of the drawer, and leg 11 between the other side of the recess 5 and the vertical end ofthe drawer, all as fully shown in 1Eig. e. And once the tie member at the corner is in place the toothed tongues 14 and 15 prevent disassembly as described.
A different form of metallic tie construction may be used, like that shown in Fig. 5. It consists of two members, each made of ilat metal into Z-bar form, having a web 17 and flanges 18 and 19 turned in opposite directions from the opposed vertical edges of the web. Each of the webs 17 is also provided with inwardly struck retaining tongues 20, and at a lower corner of one of the members a notch 13a is made for the same purpose as the notch 13 in the construction illustrated in Fig. 2.
This construction is used in substantially the same manner, the flanges 18 being equivalent to the lips 12 previously described, the webs 17 equivalent to the lips l2 previously described, and the flanges 19 equivalent to the tongues 14 and l5 except for the toothed retaining feature applicable to the tongues, which, in the structure shown in Fig. 5, is taken care of by the retaining tongues 20.
With this construction the parts, including the sides, ends and bottom of a drawer, may be fabricated in large quantity production and the metallic tie members separately produced. The drawers which are to be used, may be assembled after they have reached their destination. The
assembly is made readily without the use of skilled labor and the drawer produced is one very much strengthened and reinforced at the corners where the vertical metallic tie members are located. The invention is deiined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
