Description

I P.'DEMING.
INK-RIBBON CHAMBER FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
' No. 193,642., v Patented July 31,1877.
15 2. Wu kPi lllllllk m UNITED i I OFFICE.
PHILANDER DEMING, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK. v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [93,642, dated July 31, 1877; application filed May 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILANDER DEMING, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ink-Ribbon Chamber for Type-Wrh ters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My invention is a tight chamber, one or more, in which the ribbon is stored, and from which it is gradually drawn out by the mechanism as it is used for the printing, and to which it is gradually returned as it passes the printing-point and does its work.
In the tight chamber is a cup of water or other moisture-supplying device, by the natural evaporation of which the air in the chamber is maintained at the required degree of humidity.
In the drawing accompanying this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of two ink-ribbon chambers, and a compartment between them for type-writing machinery. Fig. 2 represents a sectional front elevation of the same.
Corresponding parts are always represented by the same letters in the two figures.
R R represent the ribbon; P, the printingpoint; 0 O, the ink-ribbon chambers, in which the coils of ribbon are stored; and W W the cups of water for the evaporation.
The chambers protect the ribbon stored in them from the dust, and from atmospheric changes, and the evaporation maintains the ink upon the ribbon in a moist state, suitable for printing, whereby theiprinting is rendered more uniform, and its quality greatly improved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with the inking-ribbon R, the chamber 0, holding said ribbon, and the cup W or moisture-supplying device for gradual evaporation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
PHILANDER. DEMING.
