Our invention relates to oil burners of the type comprisinga rotating atomizer in the form of a cup member operating to discharge from its upper edge in finely divided condition, oil supplied 5 thereto and means for causing atomizing air to flow in a direction outwardly of the cup member into contact with the air, the air commonly flowing upwardly through the cup member and being directed outwardly to the oil.
As structures of this general character have hitherto been provided the air currents referred to contact with the oil throughout at least the greater part of the travel of the oil upwardly along the inside surface. of the cup member and thus where the air contains dust or other particles, these particles, wetted by the oil, accumulate on the side wall of the cup member and on the structure commonly provided adjacent the upper edge of the cup member fordirecting the oil and air outwardly from the cup member, re-
quiring the cleaning of these parts from time to time to insure the most efiicient operation of the burner. 1

Referring to the particular construction shown and in connection with which we have chosen to illustrate our invention, and which as to its general features of construction is the same as that shown in the pending application for United States Letters Patent filed by Stanley Perry, Serial No. 516,186, filed February 16, 1931, 1 represents the bottom of the combustion chamber 2 of a furnace and formed of a plate 3 having a coveri'ng of refractory material, the plate 3 contain- 'ing an aperture 4 in which a neck-ring 5 having an outwardly extending flange 5 is confined.
The construction also comprises a vertically disposed electric motor represented at 6, the upper end of the armature shaft 7 of which is provided with a circular cup member 8 containing a large central opening 9 in its bottom which is upwardly deflected as shown to provide an annular trough 10, a circular deflector plate 11 extending above the cup member 8 in spaced rela- 5 tion thereto and provided with a set of vanes 12 depending into the cup member '8, and means hereinafter described and represented generally at 13 for maintaining separate the oil and air supplied to the member 8 until the oil has reached 7 a certain point as hereinafter described.
The deflector plate 11 is secured to the upper end of the shaft 7 by a nut 14 clamping the plate 11 between it and the annular flange 15 of a sleeve 15 surrounding the shaft 7 and bearing at its lower end against a stop 16 on the lattter, with a ring 17 interposed between the flange 15 and the plate 11. The ring 17.is provided with radial fingers 18 which extend between certain of the vanes 12 and are provided with depending 0 extensions 19 secured to the inner side of the member 8 for supporting the latter on the shaft 7 whereby the member 8 and the deflector plate 11 rotate With this shaft.

The construction shown also comprises a set' of vanes 24 which extend generally radially of the longitudinal axis of the member 8, these vanes being secured to'the outer surface of the meanher 8 and extending from points substantially coincident with the lower edge of the member 8 to points substantially coincident with the lower extremity of the side wall 21, these vanes being preferably set at a slight angle to the radial plane to present a slight lead as set forth in said pending application.

Resting on the flange 26 and against the flange 27 is a ring 28 provided about its periphery with a series of radially disposed vanes 29 which incline slightly downwardly. The outer marginal edge of the flange 26 is located above the plane of the top of the neck ring 5 and slightly inwardly of this top edge, and the vanes 29 thus project across the space between the rings 5 and 25 as shown.
The means shown for supplying oil to the cup member 8 comprise a pipe 30 leading from any suitable source of oil supplied under moderate pressure or gravity head to the lower end of a passage 31 in a boss 32 forming a part of the structure 100, the upper end of this passage opening into a pipe 33 which discharges at its depending portion 34 into the trough 10.
The arrangement of the parts of the assembly just described is such that oil fed to the trough 10 of the cup member 8 rises upwardly along the inner surface of the annular side wall of the member 8 and discharges therefrom laterally outwardly over, and throughout substantially the entire periphery of, the upper edge of the cup member and thus into the combustion chamber, during the rotation of the armature shaft '7, air being supplied to the oil thus discharging from the cup member, as hereinafter described.
In the particular arrangement shown air for atomizing the oil discharged from the cup member 8 is forced upwardly through the opening in the bottom of the cup member 8 and outwardly in all directions through the space between the upper edge of the cup member 8 and the deflector 11, by the vanes 12 which form a fan device.
In the particulararrangement shown provision is made not only for the passage of air upwardly through the cup member 8 ,as stated above, but also through the space between the ring 25 and the cup member and represented at 35 and through the space over which the vanes 29 extend, air being supplied to the burner through an opening 36 in the top of the supporting structure 100 and also, and preferably, controllably, through the space between the neck ring 5 and the upper portion of the supporting structure 100 and which contains the opening 36.
The structure shown also comprises a fan 37 shown as of the propeller type and having blades of either a fixed or adjustable pitch, this shaft being fixed on the armature shaft 7 preferably at the point shown in the drawings within the neck ring 5 and preferably within a ring 38 supported on studs 39 (one onlyof which is shown) carried by the uprights 25 the fan 37 thus being located below the air passage over which the vanes extend, the air passage 35 and the passage through the cup member 8.
The fan 3'7, in the particular construction shown, operates not only to force air upwardly through the opening in the bottom of the cup member -8, but also to force air outwardly through the passage 35 and the passage over which the vanes 29 extend, the vanes 24 serving to augment the action of the propeller 37 in forcing air through the passage 35 as fully described in our said pending application.
Referring now to the means 13 hereinbefore referred to and constituting our present improvement, these means, in accordance with the particular illustrated embodiment of our invention comprise a member 40 presenting an upper inverted generally frusto conical shaped portion 41 and a skirt portion 42 at the lower constricted end of the portion 41, the lower edge of the member 40 containing slots 43 extending from the lower portion of the frusto conical portion 41 down through the skirt portion 42, the metal at the upper ends of these slots being outwardly deflected as represented at 44 to form seating lugs.
The member 40 fits into the cup member 8 as shown and rests at its seating lugs 44 on the wall portion 21 of the cup member. The external diameter of the skirt portion 42 is slightly less than the internal diameter of the wall portion 20 of the member 8 into which the skirt portion downwardly extends to thereby form an annular pas sage between the member 40 and the wall 20 to permit of the upward flow of oil along the inside surface of the cup member 8, the slots 43 being provided to receive the depending portions 19 on the fingers 18.
The parts described are so proportioned that the upper edge of the member 40 which preferably terminates in the same horizontal plane as the upper edge of the cup member 8, will be spaced a slight distance from the upper edge of the cup member 8 as shown to provide an annular passage between these parts through which the oil discharges outwardly from the cup member 8.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the air which enters the opening 9 in the bottom of the cup member 8 and flows upwardly through the latter flows upwardly through the member 40 discharging outwardly rom the latter in all radial directions through the annular space between the upper edge of the member 40 and the deflector plate 11 thereabove as will be manifest from an inspection of Fig. 2 and thus into contact with the oil discharging upwardly from the cup member 8 with the result of atomizing the oil so discharged. Thus the oil as it flows upwardly along the inner surface of the cup member 8 and the air which flows upwardly through this cup member are maintained separated whereby dust, or other particles, entrained in the air discharge from the burner in dry condition thus avoiding accumulation of the dust, or other particles, on the portions of the burner in contact with which the oilflows, the dirt, or other particles, in the air and discharging from the burner being blown out over the upper edge of the cup member 8 and into the flame.
The member 40 preferably, and as shown, cx-
tends downwardly into the cup member 8 .to such a distance that little, if any, dust entrained with the air can be picked up by the oil and carried to the upper edge of the cup member 8.
While we have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered and the invention embodied in other forms of structure, without departing from the 1 the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil'to produce a saucer-like flame, and means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member.

In an oil burner, the combination of" a rotary hollow spraying member open at its top and bottom, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partitionforming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of said member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said secondnamed member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and means for producing flow of air through the bottom of said oil spraying member and through said second-named member.

In an oil burner the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, 'a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying men her and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame,
means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member, and means for causing air to flow along the exterior surface of said oil spraying member to the oil discharging therefrom,.but at a lesser Velocity than that of the air discharging from said second-named member.
4. In an oil burner the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portionof said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, aTaollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying memher and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion or" said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and a fan located in said second-named member for causing air to flow through the upper end of the latter and against said deflector 5. In an oil burner the combination of a ro-= tary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said 'oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, a fan located in said second-named member for causing air to flow through the upper end of thelatter and against said deflector and means for causing air to flow along the exterior surface of said oil spraying member to the oil discharging therefrom, but at a lesser velocity than that of the air discharging from said second-named member.

In an oil burner the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, a fan located in said second-named member for causing air to flow through the upper end of the latter and against said deflector, and a fan on the exterior surface of said oil spraying member for forcing air along the latter to the oil discharging therefrom, but at a lesser velocity than that of the air discharging from said second-named member. In an oil burner, the combinationof a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil-spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, the upper portion of said second-named member being of inverted frusto conical form, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members, the undersurface of said deflector and the upper surface of said second-named member converging outwardly, said deflector operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said secondnamed member in a direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member.
8. In an oil burner, the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and irom which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil-spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-1ike flame, the upper portion of said second-named member being of inverted frusto conical form and the undersurface of said deflector and the upper surface of said secondnamed member converging outwardly, and means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member.

In an oil burner, the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is .of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, the upper portion of said second-named member being of inverted frusto conical form and the undersurface of said deflector, above said second-named member, inclining upwardly and outwardly, said deflector, undersurface and the upper surface of said second-named member converging outwardly, and means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member.

In an oil burner the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top, the upper edge portion of said member extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a-hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member the upper edge of which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extends adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oilspraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, the cross-sectional area of the space between said second-named member and said deflector being less than the cross sectional. area of the space between said oil spraying member and said deflector, and means for producing flow of air through the upper end of said second-named member.

In an oil burner, the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top and bottom, the lower. portion of said member being smaller than its top portion and its upper edge extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member and open at its top and bottom, said last-named member having a frusto conical upper end portion and a lower end portion of less diameter than its upper end portion and disposed in said first-named member substantially concentric therewith, the upper edge of saidsecond-- named member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extending adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from,
meager said members and operating to deflect air dis charging thereto from said second-named memher in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and means for producing flow of air into said oil spraying member and through said secand-named member.
12. In an oil burner, the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top and bottom, the side wall of said member comprising an upper portion, a lower portion of reduced diameter and an intermediate portion of inverted substantially frusto conical form, the upper edge of said upper portion extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member and open top and bottom, said last-named member having an upper portion of inverted substantially frusto conical form disposed in the upper end of said oil spraying member and a lower reduced portion extending into the lower-end of said oil spraying member, the lower end of said second-named member being of a diameter greater than the opening in the bottom of said oil spraying member and the upper edge' of said second-named member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extending adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect the air discharged thereto from said second-hand member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and means for producing flow of air into the bottom of said oil' spraying member and through said second-named member.
13. In an oil burner, the combination of a rotary hollow oil spraying member open at its top and bottom, the side wall of said member comprising an upper portion, a lower portion of reduced diameter and an intermediate portion .of inverted substantially frusto conical form, the upper edge of said upper portion extending upwardly and from which oil supplied to said member discharges, a hollow partition-forming member in said oil spraying member and open top and bottom, said last-named member having an upper portion of inverted substantially frusto conical form disposed in the upper end of said oil spraying member and a lower reduced portion extending into the lower end of said oil spraying member, the lower end of said second-named member being of a diameter greater than the opening in the bottom of said oil spraying member and the upper edge of said second-named member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the upper edge of said oil spraying member and extending adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a deflector above, and spaced from, said members and operating to deflect the air discharged thereto from said second-named member in an outward direction crosswise of the upper edge portion of said oil spraying member for mixture with the oil to produce a saucer-like flame, and a fan located in the upper portion of said second-named member.
