INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 21, 1933 UNITED, TATES P'ATENTVV'OFFICE Q 1.925336 7 SAFETY GAS 0001;
Joseph 'Bodz ioch, Elizabeth, N. J. Application January 26, 1933. Serial No. ssases 3Claims. (01.251-164) This invention relates to improvements in safety device for locking the valves of gas stoves in their closed position, so as to positively prevent their unintentional opening or accidental 5 opening by playing children or animals having sometimes grave consequences caused by gas poisoning.
It is the main object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which is comparatively simple and therefore inexpensive, yet durable and highly efiicient in use.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a gas conduit control valve the body of which has a. chamber formed therewith for the reception of a locking member adapted to be operated by a device operated by a spring controlled plunger in the stem of the valve.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a valve locking device the operating parts of which are arranged in a chamber closed on top by means of a stem connected to the valve body by'welding in order to allow a convenient introduction of the operating partsinto said chamber. A still further object of my invention is the provision of a locking device for the valves of gas stoves or the like which can be opened to allow the operation of the valve only upon the depression of a spring controlled plunger.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a matrolling the gas supply to a gas stove and equipped with a locking device constructed according to my invention.
Fig; 2 is a longitudinal section throughthe valve body showing the position of the parts when the valve is closed and locked.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of two burners of a gas stove and their valves, one in longitudinal section showing the valve in its open, unlocked position. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 3. As illustrated, the valve body 10 having a port 11 adapted to be brought alternately in alignment 1 with the gas supply conduit 12 and the gas feed 13 for the burner is rotatably arranged within a substantially barrel-shaped body 14 and can be turned by means of its stem operating the valve body in the customary manner by a handle 16 at its upper end.
The lower end of the valve body 10is equipped with an adjusting screw 17 about whicha spring 18 is wound. I V p,
A chamber 19 is formed in the upper end of the body and is closed bymeans of the stem, which after the introduction of the operating parts of the lock is welded to the body, as indicated at 20.
In the chamber 19 a disc 21 or the like is revolving about its central pivot pin 22 and to 5 the side of the disc near its periphery is at tached the lower end of an operating rod 23 which is upwardly guided through the hollow stem 15 and has its upper end attached to a plunger knob 24, and a spring 25 is wound about the rod within the stem engaging with its lower end a shoulder in the stem and with its upper end the plunger 24 and tending to normally press the plunger outwardly.
Near the point of securing the lower end of rod 23 to disc 21 is attached to the sideface of the disc a'latch 26.
The barrel 14 has its upper end shouldered as at 27 for engagement by a pin 28 to limit the rotating movement of the valve body. so
The gas supplying pipe is designated 29 and is connected to conduit 12 while the gas feed 13 has connected thereto a needle valve 30 cooperating with a screw nipple 31 having an opening 32 leading to the gas burner.
In use the lock, which is normally in the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is unlocked by pressing the plunger 24 down in stem 15 against the action of its spring 25 so that the lower end of rod 23 will turn disc 21 and withdraw the latch 26 from its engagement with the :barrel 14 and the valve can now be opened to bring its port 11 into alignment with conduits 12 and 13 in the usual manner by turning its body for 45, or limited by the engagement of pin 28 with one of the shoulders of barrel 14, the plunger and its spring are kept in their lowered or inner position by the engagement of the latch with the innerface of the barrel- When the gas supply is turned off the rotary motion of the valve body will release the latch at the end of its movement and latch 26, disc and plunger will return into their locking position.
It will be understood that I have described the preferred form of my device only and that I may make such changes therein as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I 119 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lock for the control valves of conduits comprising a body having a port, a barrel in which said body revolves, means to limit the rotary movement of said body, a disc in said body, a latch attached to said disc and operated by means of the disc and adapted to engage said barrel, and means for operating said disc to cause said latchto engage said barrel when the valve is closed and to be disengaged therefrom when the valve is opened.
2. A lock for the control valves of gas conduits comprising a barrel having shoulders formed at its upper margin, a perforated valve body revolving in said barrel, means to hold said body in said barrel, said valve'body having a chamber formed therein, a disc rotatably arranged in said chamber, a latch secured at one end to said disc and operated'by means of the disc and engaging with its other end the barrel to lock the valve body in its closed position against accidental opening, and a means acting upon said disc to' operate'said latch.
3. A lock for the valves controlling the gas supply for gas stoves comprising a shouldered barrel, a perforated valve body revolving in said barrel, means to hold said body in said barrel, said body having a chamber, a hollow stem connected to said body by welding,a disc rotatably arranged in the chamber of said body, a spring controlled=rod secured at its inner end to said disc, a plunger button on the outer end of said rod normally projecting therefrom with the valve closed a latch'on said disc adapted to normally engage the barrel to lock the valve body against rotation, said disc adapted to be rotated upon the inward movement of said push button to withdraw the latch from the barrel and permit a rotation ot the valve body to bring its perforation in alignment with the gas conduits, and a means engaging the shoulders of said barrel for limiting the rotation of said body in either direction.
